Abstract

This study utilized a feminist approach, specifically feminist stylistics based on Mills’s theory, to describing how women leadership presented in song lyrics. The researchers analysed the lyrics of the song Women Like Me by Little Mix feat Nicki Minaj as the primary source of the study. The data were descriptive qualitative using techniques such as data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings of the study focused on stylistic analysis at the word level, at the phrase and sentence level, and at the discourse level. The research identified women leadership tendencies in language use, where certain words or phrase were exclusively associated with women. Actually, women were more commonly described based on their overall appearance. This study suggests further exploration of feminist stylistics to better understand the impact of feminism on individuals’ live.

Abstract

This study explores Indonesian ditransitive verbs from a cognitive semantics perspective, focusing on how language reflects conceptual structures and cognitive processes in social interactions, communication, and knowledge transfer. Indonesian ditransitive constructions embody conceptual metaphors and image schemas derived from sensory-motor experiences, such as the Source-Path-Goal schema, which illustrates the transfer of entities or information from a source to a goal through a path. These constructions assign semantic roles to participants, reflecting their roles in the conceptual event represented by the verb and grounded in primitive cognitive concepts called proto-roles. Embodied cognition emphasizes the role of bodily experiences in shaping linguistic expressions, evident in how ditransitive constructions embody social interactions like giving, telling, or teaching. By analyzing cognitive models of communication and learning, Indonesian ditransitive verbs illuminate the dynamics of expertise, social hierarchies, and power dynamics. Prototype theory suggests that ditransitive verbs form categories around prototypical instances, representing fundamental social actions involving the transfer of entities or information. Overall, this study showcases how cognitive semantics provides a comprehensive framework for understanding Indonesian ditransitive verbs and their role in shaping cognitive processes and social interactions.

Abstract

The hierarchy of needs is psychological aspect that should be fulfilled in the individual life as a motivation. The aims of this research are to discovered the types of hierarchy of needs by used Abraham Maslow theory from Alicia Berenson and Theo Faber and how they fulfilled the needs in The Silent Patient (2019) novel written by Alex Michaelides. This research used the descriptive qualitative method because the data of this research are analysed by words namely dialogues and monologues. After classified the data, the researchers found 31 data of Alicia’s needs and 32 data of Theo’s needs of 5 stages of hierarchy of needs that taken from dialogue and monologue. The result showed that only 4 of 5 Alicia Berenson needs are fulfilled namely, 10 data of physiological needs, 6 data of safety needs, 3 data of love need, and 6 data of self-esteem needs. Whereas Theo Faber successfully fulfilled 5 needs namely, 6 data of physiological needs, 6 data of safety needs, 13 data of love need, 3 data of self-esteem needs, and 4 data of self-actualization.

Abstract

A movie is a form of media used to communicate messages and information. It also serves as a medium for learning. The moral values represented in movies can be identified. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the moral values presented in the Forrest Gump movie. The current research employed a qualitative method. The researchers acquired the data from recordings of the Forrest Gump movie. The findings indicate that the Forrest Gump movie encompasses various moral values, including individual moral values, social moral values, and moral values about the human relationship with God. The categories of individual moral values include courage, humility, diligence, perseverance, goodness, and tolerance. The social moral values can be categorized as collaboration, helpfulness, affection, and care. The moral values about the human relationship with God include religiousness, gratitude, sincerity, and recognition of the greatness of God. The Forrest Gump movie encompasses a set of moral values. Ultimately, we can implement moral principles in our everyday existence. An ethical principle derived from the movie is the demonstration of affection and care. It is recommended that humans should prioritize the well-being of our children, parents, and friends. People should not participate in discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

Abstract

The function of translation is to transfer message from source language text into target language text. However, in translating, the translator will face some problems, for example is the translation of cultural words. Strictly speaking, the translator has difficulty in finding an equivalent of cultural words, since there is no direct and right equivalent which is used to carry the meaning of source language in word or phrase to target language. This research invertigates how cultural words in travel writing are translated. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive method. The number of the data were taken from Titik Nol novel written by Agustinus Wibowo and its translation Ground Zero into English by MT (Editor: John Michaelson). The theory used to analyze the research data is Chesterman’s theory, specifically information change on the pragmatic strategies. From the findings of the research, the researcher concludes two categories of information change strategies. Out of the 11 data which are analyzed in this research, there are 10 data that used new addition strategy, and 1 data used omission strategy.

Abstract

The research titled "Analyzing Humor in Translation Strategies and Techniques in The Amazing World of Gumball: The Boss" aims to analyze the translation strategies, techniques, and types of humor used by the translator in translating the subtitles of the animated television series. The study focuses on three main research questions: the translation strategies and techniques employed by the translator, and the type of humor used in these strategies and techniques. The research data consists of series subtitles translated from English into Indonesian. A descriptive qualitative research approach was employed, analyzing textual data rather than numerical data. The analysis was based on Gottlieb's (1998) ten subtitling strategies theory, Molina and Albir's (2002) theory of eighteen translation techniques, and Raphaelson-West's (1989) framework categorizing humor into linguistic, cultural, and universal humor types. The findings indicate that all ten subtitling strategies were applied, with the transfer strategy being the most frequently used. Sixteen out of eighteen translation techniques were employed, with literal translation being the most utilized. The translator utilized linguistic, cultural, and universal humor in the translation strategies and techniques. In conclusion, this research provides a comprehensive analysis of the translation strategies, techniques, and humor employed in the subtitles of the animated "The Amazing World of Gumball: The Boss". The study sheds light on the translator's approach and the impact on the audience's experience.

Abstract

This study examines the translation strategies and accuracy of idiomatic expressions in the Indonesian subtitles of the Wednesday series. Specifically, it analysed the methods and effectiveness of translating culturally nuanced idioms, highlighting their role in maintaining linguistic and cultural integrity. Using a qualitative method, data were collected by systematically watching the series, transcribing the target language audio, and identifying idiomatic expressions in the source language. Idioms were categorized based on Fernando and Makkai's typology, evaluated using Peter Newmark’s translation methods, and analyzed with Jan Pedersen's strategies. Accuracy was assessed using Nababan's framework. The study identified four types of idioms: pure idioms, semi-idioms, literal idioms, and phrasal verb idioms. Among the 64 idioms analyzed, 25 were pure idioms, 13 semi-idioms, 9 literal idioms, and 17 phrasal verb idioms. Translators employed five of the seven strategies outlined by Pedersen: generalization, direct translation, omission, substitution, and specification, with generalization being most frequent. The subtitle translations achieved high accuracy, with 45 accurate translations, 13 almost accurate, and 6 inaccurate. These findings underline the translators’ proficiency in maintaining the semantic and cultural integrity of idiomatic expressions. However, future research should address limitations such as the scope of data and potential subjective interpretations. This study contributes to translation studies by offering insights into idiom translation in audio-visual media, emphasizing strategies for achieving accuracy and cultural relevance.

Abstract

The abundance of information in text and visual formats poses challenges for learners in effectively understanding and utilizing it. This study investigated the role of infographic writing, facilitated by the Canva application, in enhancing English language learning at Institut Ilmu Sosial dan Manajemen STIAMI. Specifically, it examined how infographic creation supports the development of persuasive writing skills, drawing on Victor Schwab’s Writing Theory, which identifies five essential elements: grabbing attention, showing benefits, providing proof, convincing, and calling to action. Using a descriptive case study method, the research analyzed 82 student-created infographics from the English class in the Business Administration study program. The methodology included evaluating the infographics against Schwab’s criteria and assessing their alignment with the Semester Learning Plan (RPS) to determine whether learning outcomes matched the instructional objectives. The findings revealed that while infographic writing offers potential for enhancing visual and linguistic competencies, most infographics did not meet all five criteria of Schwab’s persuasive writing framework. Common deficiencies included weak attention-grabbing elements and insufficient proof or calls to action. Furthermore, the analysis showed misalignment between the expected learning outcomes in the RPS and the actual results, particularly in terms of text structure and linguistic precision. These gaps highlighted the need for clearer instructional guidelines and targeted teaching strategies to help students effectively integrate persuasive writing principles into infographic design. This study underscored the importance of aligning pedagogical tools like infographics with established learning goals to maximize their impact on English language acquisition.
