Abstract

This study examines the role of English language proficiency in developing students' soft skills in students enrolled in tourism study programs. Using a descriptive quantitative design with correlational design, the data were collected from 100 students enrolled in tourism courses using a structured questionnaire. The research indicated a moderate positive correlation between English competence and students' soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and intercultural competence. The strongest correlation was between English competence and communication competence, highlighting the facilitating function of English as a medium for enhanced professional communication in the context of tourism. The study opines that learning English language as part of tourism education should not only focus on linguistic ability but also the acquisition of soft skills to make the students more employable. It provides suggestions for teachers, curriculum designers, and future researchers to integrate English education with soft skill training through communicative and experiential learning approaches.

Abstract

This article explores the relevance and reformulation of the concept of taʿzir in contemporary Islamic education, particularly in the context of the intersection between Islamic disciplinary traditions and modern human rights frameworks. Amid concerns about the harmfulness of punitive practices for children, this article highlights the importance of understanding taʿzir not merely as a means of physical or verbal punishment, but also as part of an ethical, contextual, and transformative pedagogical approach. Drawing on classical literature, educational theory, international law, and case studies from various Islamic educational institutions, this article argues that taʿzir has the flexibility to be reinterpreted within the framework of tarbiyah, the holistic development of students’ morals, spirituality, and intellectuality. This approach is in line with the principles of maqasid al-shariʿah and global child protection norms. This article proposes a model of taʿzir pedagogy based on compassion, justice, and empathy, and encourages synergy between stakeholders to create a non-violent and culturally relevant school discipline system. Thus, renewing taʿzir does not mean abandoning the legacy of tradition, but rather affirming it through a more humane and sustainable interpretation for the best interests of children in contemporary education.

The results of the study show that the strategies implemented by the school include the use of Bima folklore as teaching materials, poetry writing activities based on local culture, writing workshops with local artists, poetry exhibitions in Harvest Works activities, and collaborative community-based learning. These strategies have been proven to improve the quality of students' poetry in terms of structure, imagination, diction and connection with local cultural values This approach also increases students' motivation, confidence and love for their local culture. This shows that cultural literacy strategies based on local wisdom are feasible to be applied as a model of learning poetry in elementary schools.
