Abstract

Bangka Belitung is an archipelagic region and the world's second-largest tin producer. Communities in coastal and mining areas face health issues related to behavior, individual characteristics, and cultural factors influencing disease patterns. One prevalent disease among urban populations in Bangka Belitung is diabetes mellitus. This study aims to explore the risk factors of diabetes mellitus in urban communities in Bangka Belitung from the stakeholders' perspective. This research employed a qualitative exploratory approach conducted in Pangkalpinang city. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants, including eight heads of public health centers, one head of the health department, one chairperson of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI), nine patients, and nine family members of patients across nine public health center service areas in Pangkalpinang city. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The study identified three main themes: (1) Lifestyle, (2) Social, economic, and environmental factors, and (3) Cognitive psychology. These factors contribute to the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in urban communities in the Bangka Belitung archipelago. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of T2DM are essential to implement effective prevention and intervention strategies to control T2DM cases in urban communities in this archipelagic and mining region.

Abstract

Children in developing countries are highly vulnerable to respiratory health problems caused by air pollution. Exposure during pregnancy and early life critically influences lung development and physical growth, with potential long-term consequences. This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of prenatal and early childhood exposure to air pollution on lung development and physical growth, and to identify risk factors that may influence these outcomes. A systematic search was conducted in February 2025 across Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. Studies published in English between 2015 and 2025 were screened using PRISMA guidelines and assessed for quality using the ROBINS-I tool. From 1,303 records, 28 studies met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-one studies (75%) reported reductions in lung function parameters such as FEV₁, FVC, and FEF25–75% in association with pollutants including PM2.5, NO₂, O₃, and PAHs. Three studies reported increased risk of stunting, primarily linked to indoor air pollution and biomass fuel exposure. These outcomes were associated with mechanisms such as oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and epigenetic changes. The second trimester of pregnancy and the first two years of life were identified as critical exposure windows. Risk was modified by age, sex, socioeconomic status, breastfeeding duration, and home ventilation. Air pollution exposure during sensitive developmental periods impairs lung function and physical growth in children. Urgent public health measures—promoting clean energy, improving indoor air quality, and reducing exposure in vulnerable groups—are essential to support healthy childhood development.

Abstract

This study reviews a range of non-hormonal pharmacological interventions used to treat vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women, including SSRIs, SNRIs, gabapentin, and neurokinin-3 receptor (NK3R) antagonists. Methods used included a literature review of multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses published over the past decade. Results showed that all interventions were effective in reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes, with efficacy rates ranging from 36 to 72%. In addition, the side effect profile was generally mild to moderate, including nausea, sleep disturbance, and headache. NK3R antagonists, such as fezolinetant, have shown great promise with a rapid onset of action and comparable efficacy to hormone therapy, but longer-term studies are needed to assess safety. This study emphasizes the importance of an individualized approach to therapy selection and the need for monitoring liver function and potential side effects. Conclusions suggest that these non-hormonal interventions are a promising alternative for postmenopausal women for whom hormone therapy is contraindicated.

Abstract

Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) is a prevalent dermatological condition marked by papulosquamous lesions, frequently found on the scalp, face, and other regions abundant in sebaceous glands. Although rarely life-threatening or communicable, SD can exert a considerable psychological influence owing to the social shame linked to inadequate hygiene, particularly among adults. This study sought to examine the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and standard deviation (SD) in the adult demographic. The study employed a cross-sectional observational methodology. Data were obtained through the examination of medical records. This study comprised 126 samples, including 44 men (66.7%) and 39 women (65.0%), aged between 26 and 45 years. Our study determined that overweight is associated with SD conditions in the adult population (p = 0.004).

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible pathological condition with multiple etiologies, leading to a gradual decline in kidney function. Hemodialysis is employed to eliminate metabolic waste products and specific toxins. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between hemoglobin levels, erythrocyte count, and serum creatinine levels in CKD patients after undergoing hemodialysis therapy. A cross-sectional study with an analytical observational design was conducted on 25 patients selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation test. The analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte count (correlation coefficient r = 0.932; p < 0.001), indicating a statistically significant association. However, no significant correlation was observed between hemoglobin and creatinine levels (r = 0.099; p = 0.636), nor between erythrocyte count and creatinine levels. In conclusion, this study found a significant association between hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte count in CKD patients post-hemodialysis at Gambiran Hospital. However, no significant relationship was observed between hemoglobin or erythrocyte parameters and serum creatinine levels.

Abstract

Male participation in Family Planning (FP) programs, particularly in permanent contraceptive methods such as vasectomy, remains significantly low in Indonesia. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the level of husband’s knowledge and their participation in vasectomy use within the working area of Buleleng I Public Health Center in 2023. Purposive sampling was used to choose 76 male respondents of reproductive age who were already parents in a cross-sectional, quantitative analytical study. A systematic questionnaire addressing two main variables knowledge of vasectomy and involvement in its use was used to gather data. Both univariate and bivariate techniques were used to analyze the data, and Pearson's correlation test was used to look at how the variables related to one another.  A mean score of 80.80 (SD ±10.05) indicated that respondents had a high level of knowledge, whereas a mean score of 4.63 (SD ±0.72) indicated moderate participation in the vasectomy program. Knowledge and participation were shown to be significantly correlated by the correlation analysis (p = 0.001). These findings suggest that a husband's propensity to use vasectomy as a form of contraception increases with his degree of understanding. This study comes to the conclusion that one of the main factors influencing men's participation in vasectomy is knowledge. Therefore, community-based educational interventions and health promotion initiatives should be strengthened to enhance men’s awareness and involvement in family planning programs, as part of broader efforts to promote gender equity in reproductive health.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that requires regular blood transfusions, often resulting in iron overload. Iron chelation therapy with deferiprone is commonly used to manage the iron overload, yet the relationship between deferiprone dosage and ferritin level reduction remains unclear. This study aimed to find out how the dose of deferiprone affects the reduction of serum ferritin levels in children with thalassemia major. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted involving 69 paediatric patients with thalassemia major receiving deferiprone therapy at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Central General Hospital, Palembang. Data on patient demographics, transfusion frequency, deferiprone dose, and serial ferritin levels (3–6 months apart) were collected. The optimal dose cut-off was determined using ROC analysis, and statistical association was tested using the Chi-Square test. Most patients (56.5%) received deferiprone doses ≤77.95 mg/kgBW. Only 36.2% achieved a ferritin reduction of ≥20%, while 50.7% experienced increased ferritin levels. No statistically significant association was found between deferiprone dose and ferritin reduction (p = 0.051), although a trend toward lower success in the high-dose group was observed (PR 0.355, 95% CI: 0.124–1.019). The average dose of deferiprone administered in this study was below the minimum dose recommended by the FDA, which may explain the lack of significant association with serum ferritin reduction. Further research with controlled dosing and exclusion of confounding variables is recommended to evaluate deferiprone effectiveness more accurately

Abstract

Despite advances in surgical techniques, anesthesia, and perioperative care, complications and mortality in thoracic surgery patients still occur. This study aims to identify risk factors for mortality in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. The database was searched for articles published in 2019–2024 using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols method, and 12 articles met the inclusion criteria. Quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A total of 25 mortality risk factors were identified and grouped into three categories, namely preoperative (n = 17), intraoperative (n = 3), and postoperative (n = 5), with preoperative factors as the most dominant category. These results indicate that a thorough evaluation of the patient's condition before surgery, as well as risk mitigation during and after surgical intervention are very important in reducing mortality rates. These findings can be used as a basis for the development of risk stratification and clinical decision making in thoracic surgery patients.

Abstract

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of cancer commonly found in the head and neck, with the highest incidence in Asia. This study aims to analyze the influence of risk factors on chemotherapy response in NPC patients at Dr. M. Hoesin Hospital Palembang. The sample consisted of 65 NPC patients who underwent chemotherapy during the 2022–2023 period, selected using consecutive sampling. The variables studied include age, gender, histopathological classification, cancer stage, body mass index (BMI), and comorbidities. Chemotherapy response, as the dependent variable, was assessed using the RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors) criteria. Data were collected from patient medical records and analyzed using SPSS software with univariate, bivariate (Chi-Squared test), and multivariate (multinomial logistic regression) analysis. The results showed that comorbidities were significantly associated with chemotherapy response, while age, gender, stage, histopathological classification, and BMI did not show significant relationships. Multivariate analysis indicated that age 30-50 years and stage IVA tended to influence chemotherapy response, although it did not reach statistical significance. In conclusion, managing comorbidities is an important factor in the success of chemotherapy in NPC patients, and this study suggests the need for a more holistic approach to treatment by considering other risk factors that may influence therapy outcomes.

Abstract

Endometriosis is one of the reproductive disorders in women that has severe symptoms and affects activities. Globally, endometriosis is estimated to affect around 10% of women of reproductive age, or around 190 million women worldwide. However, the diagnosis of endometriosis is still very slow with an average delay of 4 to 12 years from the first symptoms. This study aims to provide information on how to detect endometriosis early in adolescents. When is the best time to do early detection, what are the factors for late diagnosis, and what are the disadvantages that can occur if the diagnosis is late. This writing method is a literature study with literature sources for the last 5 years through search sites such as google scholar, Pubmed, NCBI, Clinical Key, and Science Direct. The results obtained from these various literature sources are Early detection is very important since adolescence, especially if there is severe dysmenorrhea or chronic pelvic pain. Delay in diagnosis is caused by the normalization of dysmenorrhea, lack of accurate non-invasive diagnostic tools, and low public awareness. As a result, patients are at risk of experiencing impaired quality of life.
