Deiksis is a journal that aims to be a peer-reviewed platform and an authoritative source of information. We publish scientific works from national and international lecturers, researchers, students, and practitioners to present their new ideas, concepts, and theories in Indonesian language and literature education focused on Language Learning and Indonesian Literature, Class Action Research (CAR) of the teaching of Language and Indonesian Literature, Indonesian Linguistics and Literature, Linguistic and Literary analysis as well as related topics. All articles are peer-reviewed by at least two peer-reviewers. Deiksis is managed to be issued twice in every volume. The scope of Deiksis is Indonesian Language and Literature Learning Model, Assessment and Evaluation of Teaching Indonesian Language and Literature, discourse analysis, pragmatics, anthropolinguistics, language and culture, dialectology, language documentation, cognitive linguistics, language education, translation, language planning, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and other scientific fields related to language studies.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the equivalence of English Modal Auxiliaries into Indonesian. The main question of the study is how the translator renders English modal auxiliaries into Indonesian. Since English modal auxiliaries are different from Indonesian modal auxiliaries, it may lead to the problems of rendering and understanding English modal auxiliaries for Indonesian novice translator. The Translator must be able to communicate these English modal auxiliaries into Indonesia in natural way or translation The method employed in this study is a qualitatitve descriptive method to describe and explain the equivalence English modal auxiliaries into Indonesian. Data Analysis is done through 3 steps based on Miles and Huberman’s Interactive Model. After analyzing the data, it was found that English modal auxiliaries consisting of could, may, will, can, should, would, shall, must, might, and used to were translated into different words according to the contexts. In addition, modal auxiliaries are sometimes not translated depending on the context.  Key Words : English modal auxiliaries, translation, Indonesian

Abstract

Proses komunikasi dosen dan mahasiswa yang terjadi di lingkungan perguruan tinggi merupakan salah satu faktor penentu berhasil atau tidaknya proses belajar mengajar. Keberhasilan suatu perguruan tinggi dalam membangun suatu komunikasi organisasi yang baik dan kondusif bagi dosen dan mahasiswa sangat penting dalam meningkatkan kinerja dosen dan semangat belajar mahasiswa. Sikap dosen yang yang seringkali memosisikan diri lebih tinggi dibanding mahasiswa dan mahasiswa merasa posisinya lebih rendah, dapat menimbulkan iklim komunikasi yang terjadi di antara keduanya menjadi tidak nyaman. Iklim komunikasi dipengaruhi oleh enam faktor. Pertama, kepercayaan, dosen dan mahasiswa harus saling memberikan kepercayaan satu sama lain. Kedua, pembuatan keputusan bersama, mahasiswa diberi kesempatan berkomunikasi dengan dosen agar berperan serta dalam proses pembuatan keputusan dan penentuan tujuan belajar mengajar. Ketiga, kejujuran, dosen dan mahasiswa harus dapat saling jujur dan berterus terang mengenai apa yang ada dalam hati dan pikiran mereka masing-masing secara professional. Keempat, keterbukaan dalam komunikasi ke bawah, dosen harus bersikap terbuka terhadap segala sesuatu yang berkaitan dengan mahasiswa. Kelima,mendengarkan dalam komunikasi ke atas, dosen harus mau mendengarkan laporan-laporan masalah yang terjadi dari mahasiswa. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui tuturan fonologi pada penyandang tunarungu di Cinere Depok (2) mendeskripsikan bentuk bahasa isyarat pada penyandang tunarungu di Cinere Depok. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan subjek penelitian yaitu subjek tunggal usia 22 tahun. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa subjek tunggal usia 22 tahun yang juga mengalami gangguan berbicara dan seorang penyandang tunarungu mampu melafalkan huruf vokal dengan baik, meskipun pada huruf konsonan ada beberapa huruf yang dilafalkan berubah seperti huruf B berubah menjadi P, E berubah menjadi R, G berubah menjadi E, K berubah menjadi A, Q berubah menjadi U, R berubah menjadi L, V berubah menjadi P, W berubah menjadi V, dan X berubah menjadi S. Pada wawancara ada huruf yang dilafalkan berubah seperti E, S, R, K, dan A serta hilang huruf seperti K, O, N, H, G, R, E, S, Y, B, A, I, dan T. Sedangkan pada bahasa isyarat dari subjek tunggal ini sudah sesuai dengan Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia (BISINDO).  Kata kunci: Psikolinguistik, Gangguan Berbicara, Tunarungu, Fonologi, dan Bahasa Isyarat

Abstract

The aim of the research is to obtain empirical data about the effects of sentence structure mastery and critical thinking on student’s reading comprehension. The research was conducted at grade XI from three Private Senior High Schools at South Jakarta. Research method is survey. The sample was taken randomly. There are three kinds of data: data of sentence structure mastery, data of critical thinking, and data of reading compehension. The instrument tests were firstly tried out to determine the validity and reliability. For sentence structuremastery, critical thinking, and reading comprehension’s tests, validity is calculated by Point-Biserial technique and reliability is measured by Split-Half method (Spearman Brown). Research finding shows three point: first, there are significant effects of sentence structure mastery and critical thinking on student’s reading comprehension. Second, there is significant effect of sentence structure mastery on reading comprehension. Third, there is significant effect of critical thinking on student’s reading comprehension.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Sentence Structure Mastery, Critical Thinking

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know any kind of Figurative Meanings, which is dominantly used and to find out kinds of situation used in the Jakarta Post Headline News. The data were collected by qualitative research; they were gathered by doing newspaper observation. There were 14 headline news of Jakarta post collected. The data were analyzed by figurative meaning which consists of: personification, synecdoche, metonymy. The result of the study shows that Metonymy (3), Synecdoche (6), Personification (5), and the most dominant of figurative meaning are Synecdoche (6). This figurative meaning used in all situations that show expression in which the name of an attribute or a thing is substituted by another with which it is associated closely.Key words: Figurative Meanings Analysis, Headline News Jakarta Post

Abstract

The study investigated the use of using mind mapping in storytelling to help learners in conducting speaking skill. This study employed a case study method, and the data were collected by ways of observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The researcher observed and the activities in the classroom, and transcribed the result. It is then recommended that a further study is conducted focusing on wider area on similar contexts, also in different contexts and different levels. Furthermore, conducting teaching and learning process, in different context, varied strategies are suggested to apply in the classroom. However, a further study is recommended in order to find out whether the mind mapping strategy can be used to enhance learners’ English skills in different context and levels.Key words: teaching, speaking, mind mapping

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui proses-proses fonologis beberapa bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan fonologi generatif. Data penelitian ini adalah data fonologis yang berasal dari beberapa bahasa. Data penelitian ini diambil dengan menggunakan metode refleksif introspektif untuk data bahasa yang dikuasai oleh penulis. Selain bahasa yang dikuasai penulis, data diambil dari buku-buku yang memuat data yang berasal dari bahasa lain. Ada beberapa cara menganalisis data. Yang pertama, mengumpulkan data dan mengidentifikasinya. Yang kedua adalah mengklasifikasikan data, menganalisis data, membuat kaidah fonologis, dan menjelaskan hasil temuan. Dari hasil analisis yang diperoleh, dapat disimpulkan bahwa fonologi generatif dapat menjadi pendekatan yang relevan yang dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan proses fonologis bahasa-bahasa yang berbeda. Dengan menggunakan fonologi generatif, ditemukan beberapa proses fonologis bahasa antara lain penambahan bunyi, pelesapan bunyi, koalisi, dan asimilasi.         Kata Kunci: proses fonologis, kaidah fonologi, fonologi generative

Abstract

The aim of the research is to obtain empirical data about the effects of speed reading method upon students’ reading comprehension. The research is conducted at grade XI of SMA PGRI 56 Ciputat Tangerang Selatan. Research method is experiment. This research is done by descriptive statistics, Chi Square to test the normality, Fisher test to test the homogeneity, and t-test to test the hypothesis. There are two kinds of data: data of students’ reading comprehension of experiment class and data of students’ reading comprehension of control class, done by giving 30 multiple choices of reading comprehension test. The result of the cultivation of data identifies that the result of students who are taught by speed reading method is higher than the result of students by conventional method. Therefore, it can be stated that there are effects of speed reading method upon students’ reading comprehension at grade XI of SMA PGRI 56 Ciputat Tangerang Selatan.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Speed ReadingAbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh data empiris dan menganalisis pengaruh metode membaca cepat terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada siswa kelas XI di SMA PGRI 56 Ciputat Tangerang Selatan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelititan ini yaitu eksperimen. Perhitungan yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini adalah statistik deskriptif, uji normalitas dengan menggunakan uji Chi Square, uji homogenitas dengan uji Fisher dan uji t untuk pengujian hipotesis. Data terdiri dari dua, yaitu: data hasil pemahaman membaca siswa kelompok eksperimen, dan data hasil pemahaman membaca siswa kelompok kontrol, diambil dengan memberikan tes pemahaman membaca berupa soal pilihan ganda sebanyak 30 butir soal. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, hasil pemahaman membaca siswa yang diajar dengan metode membaca cepat lebih tinggi dari hasil siswa yang diajar dengan metode konvensional. Dengan demikian hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa: ada pengaruh yang signifikan antara metode membaca cepat terhadap hasil pemahaman membaca siswa kelas XI SMA PGRI 56 Ciputat Tangerang Selatan.Kata Kunci: Pemahaman Membaca, Metode Membaca Cepat

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk menganalisis kesalahan penggunaan kata kerja beraturan dan tidak beraturan pada karangan narasi.Metode penelitian yang digunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Setelah menganalisiskesalahan dari 30 data karangan narasi yang dibuat oleh 30 siswa terdapat total kesalahan adalah 150, akhirnya penulis menarik simpulan bahwa kesalahan kata kerja tidak beraturan  yaitu 108 kesalahan (72%) dan kata kerja beraturan yaitu 42 kesalahan (28%).Kata Kunci: Analisis, Kesalahan, kata kerja beraturan, kata kerja tidak beraturan, karangan narasi

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know The effect of Learning Technique towards students’ reading skills and The effect of Critical Thinking towards students’ reading skills and also the effect both of them at Government Senior High School 1 in Depok. This research has been done in 6 Months (October 2012– March 2013). The sample is 30 students with simple random sampling taken from population. The method used into three variables. Students’ Learning Technique (X1), Students’ Critical Thinking (X2) and Reading Skills (Y). The techniques of data analysis used are descriptive statistics, validity and reliability, normality and also hypothesis test and correlation from statistic calculation and SPSS computer program. According to the data X1 vs Y, the writer concluded that any significant relationship between students’ reading skills and their learning technique in degree of 67,24 %, and also the data of X2 vs Y relationship between students’ reading skills and their learning technique in degree of 59,29 %.Keywords: Learning technique, critical thinking and reading skill.
