Abstract

This study examines the use of 'koto' (meaning 'city') in 107 village (nagari) names in West Sumatra, Indonesia, analyzing naming patterns, interpreting meanings, and exploring their connections to Minangkabau socio-cultural values. Data collected from the official website of West Sumatra's Badan Pusat Statistik reveal three key findings: four naming patterns ((head+modifier), (modifier+head+modifier), (modifier+head), and mixed pattern), eight semantic categories (spatial, temporal, personal names, plants, landforms, numerals, animals, and tools), and reflected socio-cultural values (communal nature, agrarian roots, and the philosophy of 'alam takambang jadi guru' or 'nature is a teacher'). The toponymy of Indonesian place names often incorporates elements meaning 'city,' such as 'kutha' in Javanese and 'kute' in Balinese and Acehnese, with 'koto' being prominent in Minangkabau. This research contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage by documenting toponymic traditions for future generations of the Minangkabau community, offering insights into their linguistic practices and cultural values as reflected in place names.

Abstract

This study examines linguistic impoliteness in the webtoon “The Secret of Angel (True Beauty)” by Yaongyi through a psychopragmatic approach. The background of this research highlights the increasing use of impolite language, particularly among teenagers, on digital platforms such as webtoons. The study aims to identify categories of linguistic impoliteness, analyze indicators of impoliteness, and explore its impact on interlocutors within the story's context. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, analyzing twelve episodes out of a total of two hundred fifty-seven episodes of the webtoon. Data were collected through observation and analyzed using content analysis methods. The results indicate that there are three categories of linguistic impoliteness: face-threatening, negative face-threatening, and face-removing impoliteness. Face-threatening impoliteness is the most dominant category, followed by negative face-threatening and face-removing. In conclusion, linguistic impoliteness in this webtoon is significantly influenced by the social relationships and psychological conditions of the characters, which in turn impact readers' perspectives and attitudes toward the social issues presented in the story.

Abstract

Abstract

A pleasant environment is essential for student motivation and interaction, and effective classroom management plays a key role in this. Utilizing humor in teaching creates a more welcoming and humanistic classroom atmosphere, thereby improving the overall teaching-learning process. This study aims to identify the categories of humor employed by English teachers in the classroom. A qualitative descriptive method was used for the research. Six English class sessions were observed and recorded. The data for this study consisted of humor-containing utterances made by English teachers. The analysis classified teacher humor into two main categories: appropriate and inappropriate forms. Most of the humor used by teachers fell into the appropriate category, with the majority being related to the class material, followed by humor unrelated to the subject being taught. A small portion of inappropriate humor included self-deprecating humor, while another small portion was unintentional or unplanned. In contrast, inappropriate humor was rare and typically involved derogatory comments directed at others. These findings highlight that most of the humor used was lesson-related and aligned with pedagogical objectives, while inappropriate humor was infrequent. The results suggest that humor in the classroom is primarily used as a positive pedagogical tool, contributing to an engaging and supportive learning environment. Future research should explore the impact of different humor categories on student learning outcomes and classroom dynamics.

Abstract

Language proficiency, particularly in English, is pivotal for students in Indonesia, yet many encounter Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) when required to speak English. This study examines FLSA among tenth-grade students, identifying varying anxiety levels. Most students fell into the moderate anxiety category, indicating that a significant portion experiences a moderate level of anxiety when speaking in a foreign language. A smaller but notable group of students reported high levels of anxiety, suggesting they face significant challenges due to their high anxiety levels. Internal factors contributing to anxiety include low proficiency, lack of practice, and fear of errors, while external factors encompass negative evaluations and social scrutiny. Additional factors identified include anxiety from recording and past negative experiences. Insights from Horwitz, MacIntyre, and Gardner's anxiety frameworks guide the study, emphasizing the complex interplay of cognitive, affective, and environmental factors. Data from questionnaires and interviews underscore the pervasive nature of speaking anxiety and highlight the need for supportive learning environments to alleviate anxiety and enhance language learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of gender demographic variables and program creativity on linguistics and science in prospective teacher students. These students must possess creativity, as it enables teachers to create effective and engaging learning experiences. Creativity in the field of science differs from creativity in the field of language. The measurement of linguistic creativity is conducted through a test based on Chomsky's indicators, while scientific creativity is assessed using a test developed by Hu and Adey. A total of 150 research subjects were obtained through random sampling techniques from students enrolled in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education, English Language Education, and Science Education study programs. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method with a correlation approach. Data analysis was carried out using a two-way ANOVA test. The results indicated that the demographic variables related to study program origin had an effect on linguistic creativity, although it was not significant, while they had a significant effect on scientific creativity. The gender demographic variable significantly affected both linguistic creativity and scientific creativity. These findings suggest a need for greater integration of scientific content in language study programs and the incorporation of linguistic activities in science study programs.

Abstract

This study explores the assumption that Pangkalan, situated as a transit area between West Sumatra and Riau, experiences considerable linguistic interaction, potentially leading to lexical variations in the Minangkabau language. The research focuses on identifying and describing lexical differences in the Minangkabau language as used by both older and younger speakers, further distinguishing between those with formal schooling and those without. Data were gathered through observation and elicitation methods, employing a descriptive qualitative approach to capture lexical variations among speakers in Nagari Pangkalan. Analysis involved both referential and translational equivalent methods. Out of 744 lexical concepts analyzed, 216 exhibited variations between older and younger speakers. Additionally, 23 unique lexical differences were noted among young speakers based on their educational background. Notably, 45 lexical items were distinctive to older speakers, whereas 10 were unique to younger speakers. Contrary to the initial hypothesis that Pangkalan's role as a transit area would heavily influence lexical variation, the study found that educational factors played a more significant role in shaping the observed lexical differences.
