Abstract

This research examines the maintenance and shift of Javanese and other regional languages among wood craftsmen in Tegal Regency, Indonesia. Regional languages are integral to cultural identity, and their retention or shift reflects broader social and cultural dynamics. Using a qualitative case study approach, data was collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The study employs thematic analysis to provide an in-depth understanding of language use patterns. Findings reveal a linguistic dualism in the community. While Indonesian dominates formal situations, reflecting adaptation to broader communication needs, Javanese and other regional languages prevail in daily interactions, indicating the continuity of local cultural traditions. This language shift and maintenance are influenced by social context, education, and work environment factors. The study contributes to our understanding of language ecology in multilingual Indonesian contexts, drawing on Fishman's domain analysis. It highlights how communities navigate between national and regional languages, adapting to different communication needs while preserving cultural identity. These findings have implications for language policy and cultural preservation efforts in Indonesia, particularly in balancing national unity with linguistic diversity.

Abstract

The study of children's language processing is always intriguing. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the vocabulary processing abilities of 4-year-old children in Singkil Village, Indonesia. This qualitative case study involved 10 deliberately selected participants who were 4 years old. The data collected for this study included basic vocabulary such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, conjunctions, adverbials, pronominals, prepositions, numerals, and interjections. Notes and interviews were the data collection techniques used in this research. The analysis method employed in this study was the commensurate method, which included the use of the speech organ sorting technique. This variation in understanding highlights the individualized nature of language acquisition among preschool-aged children. The findings revealed that the most mastered word types were verbs (153 words), pronominal words (86 words), adjectives (70 words), nouns (63 words), conjunctions (58 words), adverbials (44 words), numerals (27 words), prepositions (13 words), and interjections (12 words). Therefore, it can be concluded that the acquisition of Indonesian vocabulary in 4-year-old children in Singkil Village, Sukoharjo Regency, is still categorized as underdeveloped (BB), as the process of acquiring Indonesian vocabulary in these children occurs naturally through daily activities.Key words: Indonesian language skills, vocabulary development, 4 year old children

Abstract

Exploring taboos and myths in the context of teaching Indonesian to foreigners will aid students in interacting more effectively when communicating with native speakers. Web comics (webtoons) can serve as an effective tool to understand them and achieve communicative competency, one of which is "Next Door Country." This qualitative descriptive study aims to explore the content of taboos and myths in the webtoon "Next Door Country" by Aditiya Wahyu Budiawan, as well as its utilization in writing instruction for BIPA 4 (intermediate level). The primary data in this study comprise visual texts from episode 28 entitled “Green Shirt," while secondary data include literature reviews obtained from government regulations and academic journals. The primary data were analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique to interpret visual symbols within the webtoon, and the secondary data were qualitatively analyzed to generate insights into the application of taboos and myths in BIPA 4 learning. The findings indicate that the episode incorporates a taboo related to the Javanese myth, specifically the prohibition of wearing green clothes when going to the beach, because individuals wearing green will be taken by the guardian of the South Sea, Nyi Roro Kidul, and will not be able to return to land. This episode can be employed to achieve learning objectives of writing skills in BIPA 4 through a method of interpreting meaning based on visual illustrations in the silent comic, referring to the components forming the structure of narrative texts, namely plot, action, characterization, setting, and point of view.

Abstract

This study examines the literary stylistic features in NURBAYA, a contemporary Indonesian musical drama produced by Indonesia Kaya. Employing Leech and Short's (1981) framework, the research focuses on sound patterns and figures of speech, investigating how these elements enhance narrative cohesion and emotional impact while reflecting cultural values. Using qualitative content analysis, the study systematically categorizes and interprets stylistic features in conversation utterances and song lyrics. The analysis reveals a prevalence of sound patterns, particularly rhyme, which contributes to the musical's rhythmic quality and cohesion. Figures of speech, notably litotes, are employed to reflect cultural values of politeness and subtlety. For instance, the frequent use of litotes (found in 35% of character dialogues) underscores adherence to traditional norms, enhancing the play's cultural resonance. NURBAYA, as a bridge between traditional and contemporary Indonesian theatre, offers a unique lens for examining the evolution of literary style in performance art. This study demonstrates how specific literary devices enrich artistic expression and reinforce cultural themes in contemporary Indonesian theatre. These findings contribute to our understanding of the interplay between linguistics, literature, and cultural expression in performing arts, offering insights into how stylistic analysis can illuminate broader sociocultural dynamics in theatrical works.

Abstract

The primary issue addressed in this study pertains to the limited reading proficiency among students in class VIII at SMPN 1 Tikke Raya. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the discovery learning model in enhancing the reading and comprehension skills of these students. To evaluate the students’ reading comprehension abilities, this study analyzes their comprehensive understanding at factual, interpretative, and applicative levels, as defined by Ruddell’s Taxonomy. The study adopts an experimental design, employing a pretest-posttest Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The study population comprises 72 students, with a sample size of 48 students allocated to both the experimental and control groups. The data collection for this study includes reading ability and comprehension tests, as well as observations of students’ attitudes and skills during the intervention period. At the pretest stage, the results indicate no significant variation between the control and experimental groups, with the control group obtaining an average score of 42.29 and the experimental group achieving an average score of 45.00. However, the posttest findings reveal a disparity between the control and experimental groups, with the control group averaging 52.71 and the experimental group averaging 56.04. The data analysis yields a significance value of 0.453. Considering a significance level of 0.05 in the Mann-Whitney test, the Discovery Learning model is deemed ineffective in influencing the reading abilities of the students under examination.

Abstract

The accuracy of pronouncing Hijazi letters is crucial for reading the Qur'an effectively. Incorrect pronunciation not only disrupts the flow of reading but can also change the meaning of words and verses, thus deviating from the intended message. This study aims to identify and analyze the mispronunciation of the [q] phoneme by non-Arabic speakers using spectrography analysis. Spectrography analysis helps visualize the frequency, duration, and intensity of the sound produced when participants pronounce the [q] phoneme. The research utilized Praat Voice Analysis software version 6.3.17 to process voice recordings and identify differences in the pronunciation of the [q] phoneme. The research employed a comparative descriptive qualitative approach with a content analysis design. Data collection involved various techniques, including recording, listening, and transcription. Voice recordings of two 12-year-old participants and an Arabic native speaker were collected to compare the pronunciation of Surah Al-Falaq verses 1-3. The results indicated that common errors in this study included sound changes and the omission of the characteristic [q] phoneme. For instance, students often replaced the [q] phoneme with [k] due to the similarity in the articulation location of these two phonemes. Additionally, participants tended to read too quickly, not allowing sufficient time for accurate pronunciation. The study also revealed a significant difference in the articulation of Hijazi letters between male and female speaker. female speaker demonstrated more consistent pronunciation patterns, while male speaker may require further intervention to address articulation and phonological errors.
