Abstract

Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, blended learning techniques have become very important in the learning process. Therefore, this research aims to find out students' learning strategies, teachers' and students' use of learning media, and whether students' learning strategies align with teachers' and students' choices of learning media for speaking skills in blended learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a qualitative research study conducted through questionnaires and interviews. The researcher employed a purposive sampling technique to select 26 students from class XI Natural Science, class XI Social Science, and 3 English teachers from a public school in Jambi Province. The findings reveal that, firstly, students in XI Natural Science and XI Social Science predominantly used metacognitive strategies. However, the lowest strategy employed by XI Natural Science students was the cognitive strategy, while for XI Social Science students, it was the social strategy. Secondly, the most frequently used learning media by the teachers was E-book. Thirdly, this research demonstrates that the learning strategies employed by students are consistent with the learning media chosen by both teachers and students. Furthermore, the implications of this study are that teachers can gain insights on how to teach students to enhance their speaking abilities, and English teachers can benefit from adapting the learning media to the preferences of their students.

Abstract

The manuscript of Pengobatan Tradisional pada Masyarakat Pulau Penyengat (PTpMPP) contains various types of pain along with herbal ingredients, one of which is pain related to the eyes. The purpose of this study is to explain the study of ethnomedicine contained in the text of PTpMPP. The methods used are data collection, data processing, data analysis, and presentation of the results of data analysts. The data collection phase was carried out by field studies and literature studies. The data processing stage is carried out from the description of the manuscript, transliteration, and text editing. In studying its content, researchers used the theory of ethnomedicine. Studies that combine literature and ethnomedicine can provide a better understanding of how language, culture and narrative shape medical perceptions and practices in a given society. In addition, it can help improve interdisciplinary understanding of the human complexity of understanding and addressing health issues because literary works, particularly ancient texts, can reflect and shape the traditional medical knowledge and practices of different cultures. This makes it possible to understand health and medicine in a broader and more complex cultural context. Therefore, ethnomedicine is used to reveal the kinds and functions of medicinal plants used and the treatment methods contained in ancient manuscripts. The source of the data used is PTpMPP manuscript with Jawi script and Malay script, stored in Yayasan Inderasakti, Pulau Penyengat. The results of this study explain the eight causes of pain related to the eyes, namely injured eyes, eye pain (ordinary), blurred eyes, growing eyes, meat eye pain, restung eye pain, swollen eyes, and eyes for prohibition. The medical practice of treating the eight diseases belongs to the naturalistic medical system and each disease has its own herbal ingredients.

Abstract

This qualitative study analysed the use of code-switching and code-mixing in makeup advertisements from four brands of PT Paragon Technology and Innovation (Emina, MakeOver, InstaPerfect, and Wardah) on Instagram, employing Barthes' (1988). Semiotic method  was used to explore denotative and connotative meanings in the ads. Denotation refers to the literal meaning of signs, while connotation reveals additional meanings influenced by culture and ideology. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing are used to capture audience attention and create a modern brand image. For instance, MakeOver advertisements use English language to convey an international impression, whereas Emina employs code-mixing to make messages more dynamic and relevant to bilingual audiences. Practical implications of this research include assisting companies in developing effective marketing strategies and crafting engaging and grammatically appropriate ad content. Moreover, the study is expected to enhance consumer critical thinking towards advertisements and aid policymakers in establishing language usage guidelines in advertising. Overall, this research demonstrates that makeup advertisements not only promote products but also shape consumer identities and self-images, reflecting global trends and socio-cultural dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the use of adverbial aspect markers in Ermanto's novel Sansai, aiming to revitalize Minangkabau literature by focusing on both cultural and social issues. The research explores how aspect markers influence narrative understanding and temporal dynamics in contemporary Minangkabau prose. Through qualitative document analysis using the Indonesian Language Corpus Linguistic Method (KORTARA), the study identifies and classifies adverbs that denote actions, events, situations, and traits in various temporal contexts. The analysis reveals four types of aspect markers: durative, perfective, imperfective, and inchoative. The novel contains 476 adverbial aspect markers, distributed as follows: 73 durative ("middle"), 64 imperfective ("not yet"), 278 perfective ("already"), and 61 inchoative ("beginning") markers. The perfective aspect "already" emerges as the most frequently used, suggesting a narrative emphasis on completed actions or states. This linguistic analysis provides insights into the narrative structure and temporal nuances of contemporary Minangkabau literature, contributing to a deeper understanding of how language use shapes storytelling and cultural expression. The findings offer a foundation for further exploration of the relationship between linguistic features and literary techniques in regional Indonesian literature.

Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the types and functions of dysphemism in the speech of four-year-old children. This research is warranted due to the prevalence of dysphemism observed in the social contexts of early childhood communication. The study employs a case study research design, with data obtained from the speech of four-year-old children that incorporates dysphemism. A qualitative methodology is adopted, utilizing a semantic perspective grounded in the theoretical framework established by Allan and Burridge regarding dysphemism. Data collection involved listening to and recording utterances that contained dysphemism. The observational method was employed for data gathering, with the fundamental technique being the tapping technique. Advanced techniques included listening, recording, and note-taking. The analysis of the data was conducted using the referential identity method, facilitating the determination of the reference of dysphemistic utterances. Furthermore, a distributional method was also applied in the analytical process. In this investigation, the types of dysphemism are analyzed in accordance with Allan and Burridge's theoretical framework. In addition, the types of dysphemisms are studied through Chaer's theory and the functions of dysphemisms proposed by Allan and Burridge. The most frequently employed type of dysphemism within the informants' speech is identified as cross-cultural dysphemism, while ist dysphemism is the least utilized. Among the functions of dysphemism, the predominant function observed in the informants' speech is the expression of anger, while the functions of cursing, allusion, and humiliating individuals are the least employed. The implications of this study underscore the significance of dysphemism in early childhood speech, indicating a need for support from the social environment to aid children in acquiring age-appropriate vocabulary.

Abstract

The environment is important for human life. Most environmental damage is caused by humans because humans play an important role in determining the future of the environment. Local communities have ways of utilizing natural rights to protect the environment, one of which is through environmental myths. Through myths, society builds a culture that is useful for environmental sustainability. Okky Madasari's novel highlights myths that play an important role in environmental sustainability. These myths function to dispel crimes against the environment from irresponsible human behavior. This research aims to look for the relationship between myth and environmental sustainability contained in two novels by Okky Madasari, namely Mata di Tanah Melus and Mata and Laut Man. This type of research is qualitative. This research was carried out using a literary anthropology approach by studying the myths in Okky Madasari's two novels and then describing the positive relationship of these myths to environmental sustainability. Data collection techniques use library techniques. The data analysis technique uses content analysis techniques. The results of this research explain that myths have a role in environmental conservation efforts. The relationship between myth and environmental sustainability is a consideration for humans to always maintain a good relationship with nature because in essence humans are only a small part of the ecosystem. In the novel Mata di Tanah Melus, the myth about Bei Nai, or the Crocodile God is found. Fear of Bei nai figures can limit the level of crocodile hunting. In the novel Mata and the Sea Man, a myth is also found about the prohibition of fishing on full moon nights, because on that night many fish breed. With this myth, the fish breeding cycle is maintained.

Abstract

This article is about the representation of Minangkabau tabedo in the novels of Minangkabau authors after PRRI (Pemerintahan Revolusioner Republik Indonesia). Minangkabau tabedo is a manifestation of the difficult and dilemmatic socio-ideological conditions faced by the Minangkabau people after PRRI. The data of this research are taken from the novels of Minangkabau authors after PRRI, namely Dari Puncak Bukit Talang by Soewardi Idris, Panggilan Tanah Kelahiran by Dt. B. Nurdin Jacub, Saraswati Si Gadis dalam Sunyi by A.A. Navis, Warisan by Chairul Harun, and Bako by Darman Moenir. The analysis of the novels is based on Lucien Goldmann's theory of genetic structuralism and its dialectical method, and is supported by Lotman's theory of narrative text regarding the elaboration of the structure of literary works as a conceptual construction centred on the idea of binary opposition. The findings of this article show that Minangkabau tabedo is a complex of ideas and worldviews of the author that are homologously expressed in the structure of the novel and the social structure of post-PRRI Minangkabau society. The representation of Minangkabau tebedo is seen through the changes taking place in Minangkabau society, such as the shift in Minangkabau family identity from matrilineal to patrilineal; changes in the behaviour of overseas Minangkabau who are uprooted from the roots of tradition, morality and religion; the diminishing role of traditional elites such as the mamak and alim ulama; the increasingly dominant role of fathers, eliminating the role of the mamak; the fading of communal culture and the development of individual lifestyles.

Abstract

The Burning Sun scandal provides an important opportunity to study the use of language in criminal behavior and its influence on power structures in illegal networks. This research aims to answer the questions: How is language used in conversations related to this scandal to create and sustain criminal behavior? Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) based on Norman Fairclough's framework, this study analyzed conversations related to the case. Conversational evidence was taken from several trusted Korean news portals and categorized by topics such as prostitution, drug use, gambling, and illegal content dissemination. The analysis showed that the criminal group used language that reflected a well-coordinated structure, where various roles were clearly laid out, despite the rigid communication patterns. The use of imperative and interrogative sentences indicates careful planning and efficient interaction. In addition, this study reveals how social expectations and cultural prejudices are utilized, especially in the exploitation of women. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of text analysis in forensic investigations, providing insights into how language reflects criminal activity and power dynamics. The findings support combining linguistic methods with legal procedures to uncover hidden aspects of criminal organizations and improve the efficiency of law enforcement.
