Abstract

The Practice of Pemotongan dan/atau Pelukaan Genitalia Perempuan (P2GP) or Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) remains a serious problem in Indonesia because it is rooted in traditions, religious views, and cultural constructs that have been passed down through generations. The urgency of addressing this topic lies in the medical and social impacts that harm women, as well as the debate over terminology that influences public perception of the practice. This research data was obtained from the Instagram account @puan_amalhayati, which consistently campaigns against FGM/C using alternative terms to replace the term "sunat perempuan." The research focused on analyzing the content of posts, choice of terms, narratives, and netizen responses in the comments section. The method employed was content analysis, utilizing a descriptive-qualitative approach. As an analytical tool, this research refers to anthropolinguistic theory by emphasizing three main indicators: context, language ideology, and indexicality. This theory allows for the disclosure of how language becomes a means of communication as well as an instrument for shaping meaning, identity, and power relations. The research findings indicate that the use of the term P2GP is a linguistic strategy that serves to reposition the meaning of this practice from the realm of religious tradition to the realm of violations against human rights. The narrative constructed by Puan Amal Hayati emphasizes medical, gender, and progressive religious aspects to challenge the legitimacy of tradition. Meanwhile, netizen responses demonstrate an ideological contestation between references to the Kitab Kuning and arguments based on medical and human rights grounds.

Abstract

Prophetic literature is literature with a pattern of transcendence. The history of literature in Indonesia has many prophetic literary works. Prophetic literature has the purpose of introducing prophetic values. The purpose of this research is to make a research mapping of prophetic literature globally. The goal is to map developments, trends, and research opportunities about prophetic literature. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to examine prophetic literature publications from the Scopus database. Using the search terms "prophetic literature" and "prophetic education," a search from 1939 to 2024 yielded 133 publications. The data source was then focused on 66 publications in the form of articles and conference papers. The results of this research analysis, first, the results of the performance analysis show that prophetic literature research has been carried out from 1939 to 2024. Based on the citation analysis, there are 3 articles that are often referenced. The three articles have a tendency to use prophetic literature as a medium for conveying values and propaganda narratives. Second, there are future research offerings, especially with an emphasis on interdisciplinary perspectives. This is related to prophetic literature that intersects with politics, theology, history, and literature.

Abstract

The current study examines the ideology constructed by Al-Jazeera and CNN Arabic media on the issue of Indonesia's rejection of Israel at the U-20 World Cup 2023. The purpose of this research is to provide critical information and facts so that people can filter the news of Israel's rejection in Indonesia wisely. This research data is linguistic units in the Arabic mass media Al-Jazeera and CNN Arabic on March 30, 2023. Data was collected using the listening method, followed by tapping and recording techniques. The data were analyzed using the Padan method, which refers to Theo Van Leeuwen's critical discourse analysis (CDA). The results showed that Al-Jazeera media, through exclusion and inclusion, constructed public ideology not to justify Indonesia with negative representations. It was influenced by the ideology of Al-Jazeera's affiliate, Qatar, which has historically been religious and politically opposed to Israel. CNN Arabic strategizes language to construct public ideology through inclusion so that Indonesia is seen as a perpetrator of the rejection of Israel in a hostile, unprofessional, and anti-national manner. This was influenced because CNN Arabic is affiliated with America, which is a close friend of Israel in mutual economic and political relations.

Abstract

The study investigates the bilingual warning signs found along Kuta and Legian beaches in Bali, Indonesia. It is within the framework of linguistic landscape (LL) analysis. The study aims to examine language policy—specifically the mandatory use of Indonesian language in public sign—interacts with the communicative needs of a globally diverse tourist population. Employing a qualitative research design, the study analyzed 33 bilingual signs through documentation and content analysis. It focuses on language positioning, institutional authorship, and semiotic features. Drawing on the theories of emplacement and indexicality by Scollon and Scollon (2003), the findings reveal a varied landscape. While some signs comply with national regulations by prioritizing Indonesian language, others, particularly those by private entities or tourism-sensitive authorities, prioritize English to accommodate international audiences. The study highlights the pragmatic tension between top-down language policies and bottom-up communicative practices in multilingual public spaces. It further illustrates that the visibility and hierarchy of languages on sign are influenced not only by legal frameworks, but also by spatial function and sociolinguistic context. These findings contribute to ongoing discussions in sociolinguistics, language policy, and semiotics. It shows bilingual public sign that serves as a site of negotiation between national identity and global communicability in tourism-driven environments.

Abstract

One of a film’s characteristics is raising awareness about a particular social phenomenon. In Last Night in Soho, Director Edgar Wright (2021) constructed a phenomenon of power relations from the perspective of an aspiring singer in the 1960s. The present study aims to reveal how power relations among the main characters in Last Night in Soho are constructed. Employing a qualitative approach with textual analysis and film theory from Bordwell and Thompson (2012) and within the theoretical framework of Foucault’s (1975/2019) power relations and Noggle’s (1996) manipulation, the study found that the power relations between the main characters, Sandie and Jack, who are involved in a romantic relationship, are manifested through several power instruments, namely: manipulation, domination, and resistance. These power relations affect the physical and psychological aspects of the subject of power, even having a traumatic effect. Thus, the study reinforces Foucault’s premise that power is everywhere and circulated in any discourse, including romantic discourse. Furthermore, the study highlights the vulnerability of aspiring artists and shows how ‘authoritative’ individuals in the entertainment industry can manipulate artists’ dreams and ambitions.  By manipulating a romantic relationship, they exploit the artists' naïve determination and coerce them to engage in lowly activities under the guise of career advancement.

Abstract

This study tries to investigate the types of metaphors found in a Batak traditional form of oral poetics called umpasa from the cognitive linguistic perspective. By implementing Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff & Johnson (1980) and Image Schema Theory by Cruse & Croft (2004), the research aims at identifying and analyzing how metaphorical expressions in umpasa reflect Bataknese cultural values such as happiness, wealth, and honor. This descriptive qualitative research has implemented an observation method with note taking technique to collect the data taken from a classical text entitled Tradisi Umpasa Suku Batak Toba dalam Upacara Pernikahan by Sitanggang (1996). The finding reveals that of the ten metaphors analyzed, they are predominantly structured as 7 structurals, and 3 ontologicals which function to conceptualize abstract cultural concepts such as family growth, life lineage, life purpose, willingness to accept teaching, social character of a person, soul (spiritual), collective social dynamics, social advancement, son and daughter. While, based on the perspective of image schema, the metaphors can be categorized as iteration, container-full, path, enablement, container-containment, unity-merging, center and center-periphery. Ultimately, the results also have demonstrated how traditional oral expressions cognitively structure and perpetuate the cultural values which offer insight into the embodied worldview of the Batak Toba people.

Abstract

This study analyzes the polysemy phenomenon of the word "花 (Huā)" in Mandarin from a cognitive semantic perspective, as well as its translation strategies into Indonesian. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design. Data collection involved identifying and extracting all occurrences of “花” from the corpus. Analysis was guided by Rosch’s Prototype Theory (1978), Fillmore’s Frame Semantics (1982), and Lakoff & Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (1980). The research finds that the word "Huā" carries various meanings, ranging from its basic sense to metaphorical and metonymic interpretations, such as beauty, consumption, hypocrisy, and specific patterns. Cognitive semantics theory is employed to explain these meaning shifts through mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy. Furthermore, translation strategies are adapted to context, taking into account cultural differences between Mandarin and Indonesian. The findings offer insights into cross-cultural translation practices and deepen the understanding of word meaning evolution within a cognitive framework.

Abstract

Honorifics are words that show respect and politeness. They are important in languages like Balinese and Japanese because they reflect the culture and social rules of the society This study aims to examine the use of honorifics in Balinese and Japanese languages, with a focus on their dynamic role in everyday communication. The research investigates how honorific expressions reflect cultural norms, social hierarchies, and interpersonal relationships in both linguistic contexts. A qualitative comparative method was employed, using data collected from native speakers through participant observation, and structured interviews. The primary sources of data include recorded conversations, cultural texts, and interviews with Balinese and Japanese speakers. Data collection techniques involved field study and discourse analysis, while the data were analyzed using sociolinguistic and pragmatic frameworks. The results showed that Balinese honorifics come from traditions like caste, age, and social status, while Japanese honorifics depend more on the situation and how people relate to each other, influenced by context and the nature of interpersonal relationships. These results highlight the role of honorifics in maintaining social harmony and expressing cultural values. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of politeness strategies across cultures and offers insights for cross-cultural communication and sociolinguistic research

Abstract

Social media play a crucial role in shaping public discourse. Studies have been conducted to examine the language of digital spaces, however data-driven analyses of how gender construct the conflict narrative are surprisingly scarce. This study aimed to explore how gendered lexical differences in Twitter/X construct the narratives of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Employing a corpus-assisted discourse analysis, the study examines 2,105 tweets posted between 7 to 13 October 2023, a critical period when the conflict escalated. After pre-processing stage, we performed sentiment analysis using RapidMiner software to divide the corpora into four subsets: pro-Israel male and female sub-corpus and pro-Palestine male and female sub-corpus. After that, we performed keyword analysis using AntConc software to generate the word list. By extracting the twenty most frequent words along with the concordance lists, we abductively clustered the words to reveal the user’s thematic narrative. The findings reveal that male user mainly frame the conflicts around security, historical legitimacy, and territorial rights. On the contrary, female users are more likely construct their narrative on humanitarian issues. This suggests that culturally gendered norms play significant role in shaping the digital discourse, with male-driven narratives reinforcing securitization and female-driven narratives amplifying humanitarian consequences of the conflict.

Abstract

Language has always been one of the most influential and important aspects of human life, both as a medium of communication and a tool to shape identity, communicate meaning, and deal with the uncertainties of life. In existentialism, language is used as a tool to question freedom, responsibility, and the essence of the human condition. The researcher investigated constructions related to “existentialism” through an interview with a multilingual student whose experiences illustrate many aspects of the phenomenon. Language in existentialism, examines language as a way for humans to seek meaning in life, express identity, and deal with the absurd. This research utilizes the narrative inquiry method and focuses on the experience of one participant whose narrative details language choices influenced by emotional needs, reflection, and social interaction. The findings illustrate language as a form of self-reflection, emotional activation and liberation. Using a foreign language can create emotional distance and allow for a higher degree of freedom due to less cultural pressure. The reflection of moral responsibility in communication for the effects it causes provides insight into how language influences human mindsets and information processing.
