Abstract

Abstract  Few realize that swearing is not always used to express negative emotions. It can also be utilized to convey positive feelings, such as compliments. Swearing in compliments is a phenomenon identified on X, the social media platform that was formerly known as Twitter. The purpose of this study is to examine the pragmatic meaning and the pragmatic function of racial swearing in compliments on X. This study is classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study consisted of racial swearing in the compliment utterances on X. The observational method was used to gather the data. In the meantime, the data were analyzed using the identity method by referring to the theories of Hughes (2006), Kreidler (2002), Ljung (2011), and Spears (2000). The results of the data analysis are presented by using informal method. The study's findings demonstrate that the racial swearing in compliments on social media X has the pragmatic meaning of ‘guy’. In addition, it has pragmatic functions as noun supports and anaphoric use of epithets. As a noun support, the racial swearing was used to assist the compliment word, which was usually in the form of an adjective. On the other hand, as the anaphoric use of epithets, the racial swearing was used as an anaphoric pronoun, a pronoun that refers back to another noun in the utterance. It is anticipated that this study would lessen the misunderstanding that Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students may have when interacting with other English speakers on social media X.

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the reading comprehension ability and text problem solving ability of fifth grade students of MINU Nurul Huda. This research method used qualitative methodology. The principal, fifth grade teacher, and fifth grade students became the four subjects of this study. Data collection methods were carried out by means of interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis in this study was carried out using the interactive model data analysis technique, which includes data reduction, data presentation, inference, and validation steps. Source triangulation was also used to ensure the validity of the data in this study. The findings in this study show that all fifth grade students are proficient in reading and understanding reading texts, some students are able to understand the text after reading it, and fifth grade students are also proficient in writing. To understand a reading, the first thing students must do is read the text, understand the content of the text, and also be able to interpret the meaning of the text, on average they already have the ability to draw conclusions from a reading. Only a few of the students scored below the required score on the text test.

Abstract

Syair is an old poem in the form of a song that has been passed down from generation to generation. As a form of oral literature, Syair is formed by the presence of formulas and formulaic that build the story in the poem. This study aims to find formulas and formulaic that build the theme of Syair Sultan Abdul Muluk from the province of Riau, Indonesia. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method and formula theory proposed by Albert B. Lord. The results showed that there were formulas and formulaic expression in the form of character names, place names, scenes, and times. However, in the time section it is found that time is described in a non-specific manner. This is due to differences in culture or character of the place and its people. The formulas and formulaic expression build the theme of the story, which is leadership. In addition, the results of the study also show that the style of language used as a storyteller is the language style commonly used in old poem, which is rhyming and containing metaphorical figures of speech.

Abstract

This research is based on the implementation of the custom of eating lamang which is often carried out at weddings and cannot be separated from the traditions in the Kenagarian Sungai Talang community, Lima puluh Kota Regency. This research aims to =ind out the function, meaning and cultural values found in the custom of eating lamang at weddings in Kenagarian Sungai Talang. Research methods and techniques are divided into three stages, namely: data provision stage, data analysis stage, and data analysis results presentation stage. At the data provision stage, the listening method and the pro=icient method were used. The basic technique used in the listen method is the tapping technique and the advanced techniques are the skillful listening and note taking technique. At the data analysis stage, the referential equivalent method and the translational equivalent method were used. The basic technique used is the technique of selecting the determining elements and the advanced technique used is the contrasting comparison technique. Furthermore, in presenting the results of data analysis, the method used is an informal presentation method. The results of this research show that the traditional lamang eating procession contains functions, meanings and cultural values of the language in it

Abstract

This article examines the subordinating conjunctions of time in the Minangkabau language. The conjunctions that will be discussed are the types of time subordinating conjunctions and their meanings. Data was taken using the observation method. The collected data was analyzed using the add and match method. Based on the results of data analysis, there are types of time subordinating conjunctions used, namely as follows: initial time limit, time similarity, time sequence, and end time limit. The time meaning relationships found are: the initial time meaning relationship, the time similarity meaning relationship, the time sequence meaning relationship, and the final time limit meaning relationship.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jarak estetis menurut pandangan Aristoteles dalam novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk karya Ahmad Tohari. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah mengunakan metode kepustakaan dan metode catat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian menurut teori Aristoteles ditemukan jarak estetis dalam novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk karya Ahmad Tohari.  (1) Pandangan estetis Aristoteles, keindahan seni terletak pada representasi kehidupan sehari-hari dan emosi manusia yang terwujud dalam karya seni, (2) Pandangan estetis Aristoteles, seni dianggap sebagai representasi kehidupan sehari-hari dan emosi manusia yang tercermin dalam karya seni, (3) Pandangan filsuf Aristoteles, estetika berkaitan dengan keindahan dan kesenian yang mempengaruhi emosi dan pikiran manusia.

Abstract

This article analyzes oppression of black women in Octavia E Butler’s novel entitled Kindred. The primary source is the novel Kindred by Octavia Butler while the secondary sources used are books and articles.The aim of this research to identify the oppression experienced by the black women represented by the black female characters in Kindred. In revealing the issue of oppression of the black women, the writers refer to Black Feminism Theory proposed by Patricia Hill Collins . The result of the study shows that the black women experience the regulation of black women’s bodies as the form of oppression. In this sense, black women face physical violence that leads to psychological violence. Furthermore, the other body regulation is rape.The study also shows that both white men and white women can be the perpetrators of the oppression towards black women.

Abstract

Cerita rakyat Dayak Kenyah Lepoq Jalan mencermikan realitas kehidupan sehari-hari mereka yang berkaitan dengan alam. Hubungan masyarakat Dayak dengan alam terjalin harmonis karena saling membutuhkan satu sama lain. Sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan leksikon lingkungan fisik dan interelasi manusia dengan alam dalam cerita rakyat Dayak Kenyah Lepoq Jalan.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian lapangan menggunakan kajian ekolingustik dengan pendekatan analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa cerita rakyat yang ditranskripsi dari tuturan. narasumebr Adapun sumber data diperoleh dari suku Dayak Keyah Lepoq Jalan, Siti Bilung usia 68 Tahun. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode cakap dengan teknik pancing, dengan melakukan wawancara secara natural dengan meminta informan. Dilanjutkan dengan teknik catat, rekam, dan transkripsi. Metode analisis data menggunakan metode padan referensial untuk menganalisis leksikon fisik dengan teknik lanjutan hubung menyamakan. Rumusan masalah kedua dianalisis dengan metode padan ekstralingual untuk melihat hubungan manusia dengan alam. Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan leksikon yang berkaitan dengan lingkungan fisik ditemukan ada lima kategori, yaitu leksikon geografi, leksikon fauna, leksikon flora, leksikon alat, dan leksikon aktivitas. Leksikon fisik cerita rakyat Suku Dayak Kenyah ini yang menegaskan adanya interelasi manusia dengan alam, dari perspektif dimensi ideologis dan biologis. Ditemukan ada tiga interelasi manusia dengan alam, yaitu (1) interelasi manusia dengan sungai, (2) interelasi manusia dengan hutan, dan (3) interelasi manusia dengan burung.  Ketiga interelasi ini mendeskripsikan mengenai hubungan yang benefit suku Dayak Kenyah Lepoq jalan dengan alam. Alam sebagai sumber kehidupan (air dan sumber makanan) dan , tempat berlangsungnya rutinitas (berladang, berburu, bubu),  dan kepercayaan (penghuni hutan dan simbol  burung/ persatuan). Ketergantungan manusia dengan alam sebagai proteksi untuk menjaga alam sebagai sumber pemenuhan kebutuhan hidup. Pelestarian alam terwujud dan  manusia hidup berkecukupan.

Abstract

This article explains the sound changes when two nouns combine to form a compound noun in Japanese and describes the change process. The research data consists of oral data from several NHK Word Premium television programs. Data was collected using observation methods such as basic tapping techniques, advanced techniques, free-hand techniques, and note-taking. The obtained data were cross-referenced with the Japanese-Indonesian Modern Kanji Dictionary to find written equivalents. The data was then analyzed according to the theoretical basis of the research. Data analysis was carried out using methods such as the agih method and direct constituent segmentation techniques to divide the linguistic units of nouns from compound nouns. The discussion concluded that word formation in combining two or more nouns to form a compound noun in Japanese causes a change in the initial consonant sound in the second noun. There are eight changes in the sound of the initial consonant in the second noun when two or more nouns combine to form a compound noun. The initial consonants of the second noun that undergo the change process were [ k ], [ s ], [ t ] [ ç], [ h ], [ f ], [ Ɵ ], and [ ʃ]. While the occurred changes were: [k] → [g], [s] → [z],  [t] → [d],  [ç] → [ ɟ ], [h] → [b], [f] → [b],  [Ɵ] → [z], dan [ ʃ ] → [ ɟ ]. The sound changes occur when two nouns are combined to form a compound noun. Some changes result in similar or adjacent sounds, while others do not. However, all changes involve switching from voiceless sounds to voiced sounds. These sound changes are based on Japanese syllable patterns found in the list of hiragana letters.

Abstract

Movie posters are means of media promotion for an upcoming movie to persuade the moviegoers attending the cinema or to spread awareness of the near future release. In general, movie posters are embedded with initial information about the movie, i.e., the title, a short tagline, actors and actresses, production house, producers, and the team beyond its production. The information in a movie poster can be conveyed in various signs which are classified into two: linguistic and non-linguistic signs. This research aims to identify linguistic and non-linguistic signs and to analyze denotative and connotative meaning the signs found on the poster of Surau dan Silek, the debut full-length movie by Arief Malinmudo, by applying Barthes’ order of signification theory. The data are in the form of symbols found on the selected poster. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The result shows that the symbols convey numerous messages in explicit and implicitways, including information about the premise of the movie, cultural values and cultural references embedded to the story, its production detail, the actors and actresses, the characters, settings, and the moral lesson from the movie.
