Abstract

Different theorists proposed different definition of learning strategies (Wenden, 1987, OMalley and Chamot, 1990, Oxford, 1990).  All the definitions highlighted that learning strategies are the actions taken to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more effective, and more transferrable. The study aims to find out how Health Vocational School students in Ruteng, Flores employ learning strategies, what strategy is mostly employed and the implications of learning strategy employed to language learning and teaching which cover cognitive strategy, meta cognitive strategy and social strategy. Its mixed method research combining the use of quantitative and qualitative study.  For the purpose of quantitative study, it was chosen 123 students by using the technique of cluster random sampling, meanwhile for the purpose of qualitative data, it was chosen 12 students and three English teachers by using purposive sampling. The research result shows that students of health vocational schools in Ruteng, Flores employ medium language learning strategy for the three learning strategies studied (Cognitive strategy employed by 90,2% (111) students, meta cognitive strategy employed by 86,2%(106) students, and social strategy employed by 86,2% (106) students. Regarding learning strategy mostly employed, the most frequent strategy is cognitive strategy which gains the mean 3.33. Meanwhile, the least strategy is social strategy and it reaches the mean of 3.26.  Medium learning strategy for the three strategies studied, and cognitive strategy as the most frequent strategy employed has the implication to applying teaching method which is oriented to raise up students cognitive strategy, adopting regularly the meta cognitive instruction in the classroom to help students improve academic achievement, and providing the opportunity for students to practice speaking English out of the classroom.

This study aims to determine the level of creativity of students who are taught using problem based learning models and students who are taught using direct learning models. To find out the learning outcomes of students who have a high level of creativity and creativity level of creativity is low. The method used in this study is Quasi Experimental. The design used is a 2x2 factorial design, because this design can be used to see student learning outcomes before administering treatments and after giving treatments. The results of the study found: (1) the level of creativity of students who study using a learning model based on higher learning outcomes compared to students who learn with the direct learning model; (2) student learning outcomes with a high level of creativity, significantly higher than students who have low levels of creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between the use of learning models and the level of creativity on student learning outcomes. This study concludes that: (1) problem based learning models can improve student creativity; (2) students who have a high level of creativity, higher learning outcomes than students who have low levels of creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between the use of learning models and the level of creativity on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The study was aimed to finding out (1) Whether or not the use of authentic materials is effective to develop the reading comprehension achievement of Indonesian EFL Students, (2) Whether or not the use of authentic materials is effective to develop reading motivation of Indonesian EFL Students. The study was carried out under the quantitative paradigm with quasi experimental design. The participants were selected by using cluster sampling technique and divided into two groups, namely authentic group and pedagogic group. Each of groups consisted of 39 participants. All participants were first grade students of high school in Bone, Indonesia. The data of the students reading comprehension achievement were collected by using reading comprehension test, while the data about the students reading motivation were taken from Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) containing 32 items on seven domains of motivation. The data collected were then analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS 20 program. The result showed that (1) the use of authentic materials was effective than pedagogic materials to develop reading comprehension achievement of the first year students. It was seen from the significance t-test result that reveals the significance value was lower than the significance level; (0.00 < 0.05). Furthermore, in relation to the reading motivation of students, (2) it was found that authentic materials was effective to develop students reading motivation. The result showed that the p-value of students reading motivation before and after treatments was greater than the level of significance (0.00 < 0.05).
