Abstract

Issues of environmental degradation and the marginalization of local cultures have become increasingly prominent in contemporary Indonesian literature as a response to the exploitation of natural resources and the penetration of modernity that threaten the sustainability of indigenous communities. Okky Madasari’s novel Mata di Tanah Melus strongly represents the complex relationship between humans, nature, and the culture of the Melus community in Belu, East Nusa Tenggara, within the context of ecological conflict. This study aims to describe the forms of ecological conflict and local cultural resistance represented in the novel by applying Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism framework, particularly the concepts of wilderness, apocalypse, dwelling, and pastoral. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using content analysis of the novel. The findings reveal that ecological conflict is portrayed through forest destruction, disputes over ancestral land, the exploitation of Mount Lakaan, and violence against nonhuman beings, reflecting both ecological and cultural crises. Meanwhile, local cultural resistance is manifested in harmonious living practices with nature, the preservation of traditional rituals, respect for sacred landscapes and animals, and efforts to defend living space from capitalist expansion. These findings affirm that the novel not only presents a narrative of ecological conflict but also offers a critique of modern anthropocentric paradigms and positions local wisdom as a foundation for sustainable ecological ethics.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship between family parenting patterns, verbal stimulation, and phonological development in three-year-old children. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, combining direct observation and audio recordings of the child’s verbal responses. The results indicate that the child’s receptive language is fairly well developed, able to understand instructions and provide meaningful responses. However, expressive language shows difficulties, with frequent mispronunciations, consonant cluster reductions, sound substitutions, and syllable shortening, related to immature speech organs and limited verbal stimulation from the family. Permissive parenting, including the use of gadgets as distractions and limited verbal guidance, reduces opportunities for consistent pronunciation modeling. Although informal family interactions occasionally provide positive reinforcement, their irregularity is insufficient to correct persistent phonological errors. Overall, this study highlights that consistent verbal stimulation and responsive parenting are crucial for phonological development at age three, a period of rapid language growth that still requires continuous guidance.

Abstract

The folklore of Bhuju’ Tolombhung in Bangkalan represents a unique local knowledge system, characterizing a sacred site as a natural saltwater spring phenomenon rather than a gravesite. This study aims to deconstruct the spiritual value structure within the narrative using Notonagoro's axiology analysis. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with observation and in-depth interview data collection techniques involving custodians and community leaders of Batokaban Village, the research of Hierarchy of Values in the Folk Story of Bhuju’ Tolombhung in Batokaban Village reveals four integrative value dimensions. The value of truth appears as cosmological logic positioning the site as Axis Mundi; the value of goodness manifests in taboo ethics serving as ecological conservation; the value of beauty is reflected through agrarian symbolism of the "granary stone"; and the value of religiosity teaches the essence of monotheism through asceticism myths. The interesting facts found in this research prove that the Bhuju’ concept is flexible as a personification of living nature, affirming the function of folklore as a cultural defense mechanism and moral guide for the Madurese community.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and compare the application of Barthes' five codes in the short stories “Pelajaran Mengarang” and “The Story of an Hour.” This study is a descriptive qualitative research with a semiotic theoretical framework of Roland Barthes and comparative literature studies as the analytical approach. The data collection technique used is document study using the short story “Pelajaran Mengarang” by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, and relevant literature sources. The data analysis techniques include reading and understanding the content of the short stories, identifying data, classifying data based on Barthes' five codes, analyzing and describing the data, comparing the application of Barthes' five codes in the two short stories, and drawing conclusions. The analysis results show that both short stories build meaning through narrative puzzles, connotative signs, symbolic opposition, sequences of actions, and social values. Barthes' five codes semiotic theory reveals social criticism through the inner experiences of female characters in both short stories. This research contributes to semiotic studies, comparative literature studies, and enhances the understanding of Barthes' five codes in literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of unequal emotional relationships in the lyrics of Fabio Asher’s song “Rumah Singgah” using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis approach. The scope of this study focuses on revealing the meaning of one-sided love, emotional sacrifice, and unequal reliationships constructed through language in song lyrics. The method used is descriptive qualitative, applying Fairclough’s three dimensions of analysis, namely text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The research data consists of the lyrics of the song “Rumah Singgah” and listener responses obtained from comment columns on digital platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. The results of the study show that the song lyrics represent the subject “i” as the party who acts as an emotional support without receiving equal recognition and commitment. The metaphor “rumah singgah” (temporary shelter) is the core of the discourse that affirms the subject’s position as a temporary refuge, not the ultimate goal in a relationship.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and types of code-switching and analyze their social functions in a public lecture delivered by Dedi Mulyadi at UIN Bandung. The research scope covers internal code-switching, code-mixing, social context, and rhetorical functions within the lecture. A qualitative approach was employed through literature review and direct observation, drawing on theories from Rahardi, Wardhaugh, Holmes, and Chaer & Agustina. Data were collected through direct observation, documenting 10 instances of code-switching and 5 instances of code-mixing in the speaker’s expressions . The findings indicate that code-switching serves to emphasize meaning, create humor, and reinforce the speaker’s Sundanese cultural identity. Notably, several Sundanese philosophical expressions—such as “Rama, resi, ratu, gunung kudu awian” and “Kudu balik ka dirina, mulang ka asalna”—highlight the symbolic role of language in forming emotional connections with the audience. This research demonstrates that code-switching is not merely a linguistic phenomenon but also a cultural communication strategy within academic settings.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of kemponan that continues to exist in the Malay community of Pontianak, understood not merely as a traditional belief but as a manifestation of politeness within the local speech culture. The study aims to describe the community’s perception of the kemponan concept, portray informants’ experiences in encountering or observing the practice, and explain how the meaning of politeness is interpreted through it. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using in-depth interviews and observations of kemponan practices in Pontianak’s social context. The findings reveal that kemponan is perceived as a form of respect toward the giver and as a means of maintaining social harmony. This practice functions as a guideline for polite behavior in daily interactions and reflects pragmatic politeness values rooted in Malay local wisdom. Thus, kemponan serves not only as a cultural tradition but also as an expression of linguistic ethics and a strategy for preserving social balance within the Pontianak Malay community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Malay–Minangkabau mantras as ritual language practices through the perspectives of forensic linguistics and sociolinguistic–cultural studies. Specifically, the research seeks to identify the linguistic features of mantras at the phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic levels; to represent the linguistic identity of their speakers; and to explain the social and cultural functions of mantras within local communities. The study positions mantras not merely as magical texts or folklore, but as social–linguistic actions that record values, identity, and the cultural dynamics of the Malay–Minangkabau community. The scope of the research is limited to healing and protective mantras used in particular Malay–Minangkabau communities. The analysis focuses on linguistic structure and socio-cultural context without normatively evaluating medical or theological aspects. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, this study integrates forensic linguistics, Halliday’s theory of social meaning (ideational, interpersonal, and textual), and the language–culture perspectives of Foley and Duranti. The research data consist of mantra texts obtained from the documentation of oral traditions and. The findings indicate that mantras exhibit formulaic and performative linguistic structures that function as mechanisms of psychosocial regulation within the community. A noteworthy finding is that mantras constitute a restricted ritual register with socially limited users and function as a collective linguistic fingerprint that records the identity, history, and cultural transformation of the Malay–Minangkabau community.

Abstract

TikTok has emerged as an educational discourse space that reflects public responses to the concept of deep learning within instructional contexts as a pedagogical approach. This study aims to describe the forms and meanings of expressive speech acts found in users’ comments on TikTok content related to deep learning, while also linking them to the values of mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning. The data consist of 50 expressive utterances collected from user comments during the period of January to March 2025. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using an extralingual equivalent method to relate linguistic forms to their underlying social and digital contexts. The findings reveal a range of expressive speech acts, including criticism (32%), complaints (26%), praise (18%), expectations (10%), agreement (8%), affirmation (4%), sarcasm (2%), and expressions of gratitude (2%). Criticism and complaints reflect the value of mindful learning, as they demonstrate users’ critical awareness of the gap between theoretical concepts and actual classroom practices. Praise and gratitude represent the value of joyful learning through expressions of appreciation and positive learning experiences. Meanwhile, expectations and agreement indicate the value of meaningful learning, as they convey interpretations of the relevance and benefits of deep learning. This study contributes theoretically to the field of digital pragmatics and practically provides insight into public responses toward educational communication on social media platforms.
