Abstract

This study investigates the application of postmodern aesthetic idioms in literary works, with a focus on the poetry collection “Hompimpa Alaium Gambreng” by Hamzah Muhammad. The research employs the theoretical framework of postmodernism as proposed by Wijayati and literary postmodernism as articulated by Endraswara. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that all five idioms of postmodern aesthetics are manifested in the poems. These idioms contribute to the creation of poetry that engages more directly with social realities through a light and accessible narrative style. By subverting conventional literary norms, this approach enables broader imaginative expression and offers an alternative medium for representing social realities. Consequently, the work becomes more inclusive and accessible to a wider audience across various social backgrounds.

Abstract

This research aims to compare kinship terms in Sasak and Mbojo languages in an anthropolinguistic perspective. The scope of the research includes analyzing the form, function, and meaning of kinship terms used in Sasak and Mbojo language-speaking communities, as well as how social factors such as age, gender, and family relationships influence the use of these terms. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The method of data provision in this research is the observation method with the technique of listening to conversation and recording techniques. The research data studied include vocabulary and patterns of kinship greetings from blood relations and marriage relations in Sasak and Mbojo languages. The results of this research is that there are seven levels of kinship terms related to blood relations in the Sasak tribe, while in Mbojo tribe it only reaches the sixth level. In addition, there is a patrilineal system in naming kinship in the Sasak language, such as in the mention of papuq dade ‘grandparents from the father’s line’ and papuq bungkak ‘grandparents from mother’s line’. The naming means that when two people who are still related marry, the grandparents from the male side have more rights over their grandchildren regarding lineage. The child will also follow the greeting or kinship language of the father’s lineage or the lineage of the male family.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the discourse structure in the folklore of Asal-Muasal Keroak Bangkai by using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory, which includes three main dimensions: text structure, social cognition, and social context. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with data analysis techniques developed by Miles and Huberman which consists of three research stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Teun A. van Dijk's CDA approach was used to analyse the macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure of the folktales. The results showed that at the macro level, the story raised the theme of prudence and the consequences of human negligence in facing spiritual warnings. At the superstructure level, the story has a complete and structured narrative flow from introduction to conflict resolution. The microstructure shows the use of archaic diction, metaphorical language style, and stylistic elements typical of traditional oral literature. In terms of social cognition, the author conveys the moral message of the importance of preparedness and belief in the signs of the supernatural. The social context of the story reflects the belief system and cultural values of the local people who value traditions, myths, and the educational function of folklore. The overall analysis shows that folklore is not only a form of entertainment, but also a means of learning and in society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the novel Batu Berkaki through an ecocritical approach by highlighting the practice of ecological neocolonialism within the scope of village society. The main focus of this study is: (1) capitalism and power over natural resources, (2) the representation of nature as a space of conflict and exploitation, and (3) ecological memory and trauma. This research method is an ecocritical analysis method with an ethical study model. The data in this study are in the form of quotations contained in the novel Batu Berkaki. The results of this study indicate that the novel Batu Berkaki represents neocolonialism framed through the practice of capitalism. Neocolonialism is shown through the behavior of the Munarto family towards the residents of Ledok Awu Village, while environmental ethics are reflected by the character of Mbok Im, namely responsibility and morals towards nature. This study shows that nature becomes an active subject in the struggle for power as well as a victim of human possession driven by capitalist ideology.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the narrative structure in two short stories, Gadis Korek Api by Djenar Maesa Ayu and Pesta Tubuh by Oka Rusmini, using Genette’s narratology theory, particularly focusing on the aspects of order and frequency. The analysis shows that both stories employ the technique of analepsis, which is the insertion of past events into the present narrative in a non-chronological manner. In terms of frequency, Gadis Korek Api features anaphoric and iterative frequency, while Pesta Tubuh contains anaphoric and repetitive frequency. Both short stories present a non-linear narrative structure that emphasizes the recurring trauma and experiences of the main characters. The past is gradually revealed as part of a living narrative that shapes the characters’ identities. In terms of frequency, some events shows that the content of the fairy tale read or recited by the main character functions as a reinforcement and solace for the woman's suffering. This study demonstrates that the application of Genette’s narratology yields unique findings, particularly in identifying patterns of analepsis and narrative frequency in these two short stories. Thus, this research not only enriches the reading of both stories but also underscores the importance of structural approaches in modern narrative studies.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of spelling errors found in the academic papers written by second-semester students of the Computer Science Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University. The research focuses on three key aspects outlined in the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (EYD), 5th edition: the use of capital letters, punctuation marks, and word formation. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, data were collected using documentation techniques by identifying and transcribing relevant sections from five purposively selected student papers. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that spelling errors remain a recurring and dominant issue in students’ academic writing. These errors consistently appear across the analyzed documents, including the omission of capital letters in proper nouns and sentence-initial positions, incorrect use of punctuation that affects sentence structure and clarity, as well as errors in the use of prepositions, reduplication, and nonstandard word forms. These findings reflect students’ limited mastery of spelling conventions and a lack of revision or proofreading habits. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening Indonesian language instruction by focusing on practical writing and editing skills, especially within non-language academic programs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and functions of relative clauses in the animated film Upin Ipin: Siamang Tunggal through a linguistic typology approach. It focuses on how relative clauses are constructed and utilized in character dialogues, representing contemporary Malaysian Malay. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method and analyzes data based on typological theories by Comrie and Keenan. The findings reveal that all relative clauses in the film employ the marker yang, most of which are restrictive clauses where the relativized element functions as the subject. The relative clause structures follow a consistent head-initial pattern and the basic SVO sentence order, which are typological features of Malay. Beyond syntactic function, relative clauses also contribute significantly to the narrative and rhetorical structure of the film. These findings affirm that linguistic data drawn from popular media such as animation can serve as valid and meaningful sources for linguistic inquiry.
