Abstract

The competence of Communication Science graduates has not yet met the needs of the mass media industry. Higher education institutions have failed to produce professional and skilled journalists. This research aimed to discover the experience of student negotiation and collaboration during journalism practices. It was a case study with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The informants were 104 students of Communications Science at the University of Singaperbangsa Karawang (Unsika). Data were collected through written interviews with open-ended questions, participatory observations, and document studies. This study examined the informants’ negotiation and collaboration skills in journalistic reporting. The determination of these two skills was developed from the journalist competency standards of the Press Council and was studied using the Negotiation Theory and Collaboration Concept. This study concluded that 27 out of 34 informant groups can conduct distributive bargaining and integrative negotiation in penetrating the source and 15 out of 34 informant groups can establish Group Projects, Cross-Group Collaboration, and Collaborative Projects with fellow group members, cross-groups, and the Student Press Institute (LPM) to publish news.

Abstract

Celebes TV, one of the local television stations in Makassar, features news as its main program, Celebes Petang. News value is a consideration for journalists to cover what the informant has witnessed and been concerned about because the news becomes more interesting to watch. This research aimed to identify the process of the TV news production of Celebes Petang and all the people involved in the production program and to find out the understanding of Celebes TV journalists on the general criteria for reporting newsworthy events. This qualitative approach collected the data by observation, interviews, and documentation. This research showed that the production process of the news program Celebes Petang on Celebes TV follows the procedure of television programs. The production process starts when the news manager, producer, and reportage in chief observe the broadcasting materials or theme from any courtesy. During the meeting, the reporter and the staff are assigned by the director of reportage to cover the news. After that, the reporter writes the script based on the news. This script is used as the material in the dubbing process. The next stage is editing the news items and dubbing. The producer will correct the result of the editing process. The approved result was printed into the data form and sent to the server to be aired live to the viewers by a crew of the master control room.

Abstract

A notable incident occurred on November 25, 2023, in Bitung, North Sulawesi, when a clash between the Muslim Solidarity Front (supporting Palestine) and the Menguni Troops (supporting Israel) resulted in one death and two injuries. This phenomenon highlights the volatile nature of intergroup tensions. However, local media played a commendable role by actively engaging in conflict reconciliation efforts, instead of exacerbating the situation, and demonstrating a proactive approach to mitigating ethno-religious conflict tensions. This research aims to elucidate the practice of peace journalism as employed by local journalists in North Sulawesi, specifically in their role in reducing the ethno-religious conflict in Bitung. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and case study methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document reviews. The study involved five local journalists from Bitung as research subjects, focusing on their application of peace journalism techniques in the aftermath of the conflict. The findings indicated that these journalists have a heightened awareness of the necessity for a peaceful resolution following the riots. They actively adopt and implement principles of peace journalism to quell unrest, thereby contributing to a swift resolution of conflicts. This emphasizes the critical role of journalism in fostering peace and preventing the escalation of intergroup conflicts in Indonesia. This study recommends the importance of understanding the concept of peace journalism and its application in presenting the news, especially when dealing with complex contemporary conflicts such as ethnic and religious conflicts, which are further complicated by external factors, such as the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Abstract

Demonstrations in Indonesia frequently reflect students’ social and political actions, particularly in criticizing government policies. In exploring the phenomenon of “Demo Indonesia Gelap,” this study uncovered patterns of public discourse through the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF) and Habermas’ concept of the public sphere. It analyzed how CNN Indonesia framed the demonstration and assessed whether its coverage adhered to principles of independent journalism. Using discourse network analysis, this research identified the roles played by relevant actors, including students, academics, and media outlets, in shaping public opinion. Findings indicate that students remain central in mobilizing critical discourse against government policies, while the media significantly influences the narratives surrounding such demonstrations. Although CNN Indonesia effectively disseminated information, questions emerged regarding its neutrality. This study highlights the increasing influence of media and communication technologies on social movements in the digital era. Moreover, the primary issue underlying the demonstrations is government policy amid a period of political transition. The research suggests the importance of addressing how media framing shapes public perception and maintaining the public sphere as a democratic space for open discourse, free from intervention by particular political interests.

Abstract

Local media in Lampung demonstrated varied disaster journalism implementation during the 2024 flood coverage. Despite possessing strengths in early warning systems and ethical reporting, weaknesses persisted: coverage limited to chronological events without in-depth analysis, inadequate preparedness of educational content, and weak post-disaster rehabilitation reporting. This study examines the implementation of disaster journalism principles in flood coverage by three major Lampung online media outlets: Lampungpost.co, Radarlampung.co.id, and Tribunlampung.co.id during 2024. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a social responsibility theory framework, data were collected through content analysis of 72 news articles regarding flood (January to May 2024), in-depth interviews with editors-in-chief and coverage managers, and document review of coverage processes. The findings reveal suboptimal disaster journalism implementation across all disaster phases. The pre-disaster phase lacked comprehensive educational content. During disasters, though ethical standards were maintained, focus remained limited to chronological events. The post-disaster phase showed significant weaknesses in rehabilitation coverage and government accountability. The absence of specialized disaster journalism training emerged as a critical limiting factor. The study recommends specialist training programs, collaborative frameworks between media and disaster management agencies, and comprehensive coverage guidelines.

Abstract

Press freedom is a concept that refers to the guarantee of citizens' rights to receive information. However, the journey to realize press freedom so that it becomes an inseparable part of the order of the nation and state requires a long time with enormous challenges, especially within the conflict-prone areas. This research aims to explore press freedom in Papua, journalists' interpretation of press freedom, press freedom in reporting sensitive issues, and the causes of journalists' vulnerability to violence. It employed a case study method with a constructivist paradigm. The results showed that press freedom in journalistic activities in Papua, as a prone conflict area, has not gone well due to various obstacles. Journalists interpret freedom of the press as free from all kinds of threats, prohibitions, and intimidation, free to build relationships with anyone, and free to provide true, objective, and non-biased information as a form of responsibility to the public. Journalists interpret the press freedom guarantee in Press Law No.40 of 1999 as still needing firmness and special discussion, especially regarding journalistic activities and special protection in conflict areas as a necessity in various forms. Press freedom in reporting sensitive issues in Papua, as a prone conflict area, requires journalists to consider their safety. The causes of the vulnerability of journalists to violence in Papua Province, as a prone conflict area, are the low professionalism of journalists, the suboptimal role of press companies and journalist organizations in providing protection.

Abstract

This paper examined Kompas Daily’s editorial framing strategy in depicting President Soekarno as an antagonist during Indonesia’s 1966 political turbulence. It investigated how the newspaper used visual framing, photo selection, and headline composition to construct contrasting images of Soekarno and his successor, Soeharto. Employing a qualitative method with visual and contextual analysis, this research analyzed the symbolic representation of leadership transition in Kompas’s front-page layout published on February 23, 1967. The findings revealed that Kompas framed Soekarno as a declining and melancholic figure while Soeharto was presented as confident and resolute. These visual choices were not neutral but tendentious in shifting political power, allowing Kompas to adapt to the rise of the New Order regime. The study introduces the concept of “swinging journalism” to describe the maneuver of media institutions to survive during the changing political climates. This framing positioned Kompas as not only a chronicler of events but also an agent that legitimized the New Order through subtle visual rhetoric. The paper suggested that visual media could shape public memory and political legitimacy during transitional periods. Therefore, it contributes to the growing body of literature on media representation, newsroom dynamics, and the visual construction of political narratives in authoritarian contexts. Furthermore, this study presents a case-specific illustration of editorial decision-making and ideological positioning in Indonesia’s press history, and contributes conceptual perspectives relevant to broader media studies.

Abstract

Media framing of international conflicts significantly influences public perception and foreign policy discourse, as in the Israel-Lebanon conflict. The study examines how the attack on Lebanon by Israel in September to October 2024 was reported differently by Kompas.id (Indonesian secular), Republika.co.id (Indonesian Islamic), CNN.com (US mainstream), and Aljazeera.com (Qatari pan-Arab). It aims to understand how geographical location, ideology, and cultural context shape international conflict narratives. A qualitative framing analysis was performed using Robert M. Entman’s four-element structure: defining the problem, explaining the causes, judging the morality, and suggesting solutions. Four news articles were analyzed using a systematic coding process, and intercoder reliability was checked. Kompas.id used neutral language, highlighting the international community’s disapproval and refraining from taking sides. Republika.co.id presented Israel’s actions as violations of sovereignty and urged the international community to put pressure on the country. CNN.com gave equal attention to regional events and different viewpoints. Aljazeera.com highlighted the crisis and the violations of international law in a very critical way. Media framing operates as a soft power mechanism in international relations, constructing epistemological frameworks that transcend simple objectivity-bias dichotomies. Indonesian media balances Western ideas of neutrality and the need to support their region. It is important to understand these framing dynamics for media literacy, diplomatic strategy and to notice the variety of knowledge in international journalism. Future research should incorporate audience reception studies and examine longer-term framing patterns across multiple conflicts.

Abstract

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Indonesia has experienced rapid growth. As of early 2025, Indonesian users recorded over 300 million visits to AI applications, placing the country among the top ten globally in AI usage. Worldwide, 87% of organizations had adopted AI in at least one operational function, including within the radio broadcasting sector. Radio XChannel is one of the Indonesian radio stations that began integrating AI into its operations. This study aimed to explore the station’s AI adoption strategy and identify the opportunities and challenges faced during implementation. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation of broadcast materials and internal policies related to AI. This study examines how AI is applied in XChannel, based on radio production management processes, and how AI can provide a different perspective. The research findings indicate that XChannel is starting to implement AI to adapt to digital disruption while also addressing the need for efficiency to meet the challenges of the radio business. However, the application of AI remains limited to text-to-audio conversion, playing the role of a news anchor in news segments. Meanwhile, AI is not yet utilized in the live broadcast process and is only employed in content production for the YouTube channel. These findings suggest that the use of AI in the radio industry, specifically at XChannel, is still in its early stages and faces both technical challenges and human resource constraints. Further research is recommended to explore more comprehensive AI integration strategies and evaluate their impact on audience engagement and the quality of the produced content.
