Abstract

This research seeks to explore how the Israel-Iran conflict in April 2024 is framed by the online media Kompas.id, Aljazeera.com, and NYTimes.com. This research aims to investigate how different narratives about the long-standing conflict pertaining to Iran-Israel complex tensions are carried by these media that present distinct geopolitical perspectives. This study uses a qualitative approach employing Robert M. Entman's framing model analysis consisting of four elements: defining the problem, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and suggesting solutions. Data was captured from articles written during a specific period in April 2024. Examination may include determining bias, thematic emphases and narrative strategies for each story. It was found that each media outlet had different frames for conflict. Kompas.id tends to take a more neutral approach. Aljazeera.com emphasizes the implications of Middle Eastern geopolitics of the conflict, while NYTmes.com concentrates on the broader international impact as well as the foreign policy interests of America. Such variations are politically and culturally biased according to the diverse media outlets used. This research highlights the biases and priorities reflected in the media report of the geopolitics conflict presented by various media outlets and provides insight into how the conflict is portrayed by the large media.

Abstract

The digital evolution in the journalistic arena forces journalists to adapt their practices to the rules that come from the economic arena associated with commercialization. Reduced advertising revenue has resulted in the media tending to prioritize financial survival over journalistic principles or ethics. This research aims to describe how journalists struggle to define journalistic practices amidst the pressure of commercialization, using Bourdieu’s theoretical perspective. The method used is metajournalistic discourse, using metajournalistic documents in the form of scripts written by digital journalists who broadcast them on Remotivi. Metajournalistic discourse is a textual analysis method that focuses on how journalists tell stories about their journalistic practices, and these stories are assumed to shape the journalistic arena they inhabit. The findings show that journalists experience a paradox in defining and carrying out journalistic practices that are considered ideal. On the one hand, journalists appear to carry out journalistic practices in a situation with a high degree of heteronomy. On the other hand, journalists also seek to develop resistance by maintaining or developing definitions of journalistic practices or norms that are close to the autonomy pole, for example, by defining their journalistic practice with the term “journalistic jihad.” These idealized journalistic definitions or norms (which prioritize verification, accuracy, and adherence to journalistic firewalls) are shared and circulated through discourse texts to become resistance narratives.

Abstract

Trial by the press is an ethically prohibited practice in journalism activities in Indonesia. However, it still occurs in various online media, meaning that there is something wrong with the ethical actions of online media journalists. This research aims to reveal the ethical experiences of online media journalists in avoiding trial by the press. This research method uses a phenomenological approach by conducting interviews with five online media journalists and a literature study of regulatory trials by the press in Indonesia. The results show that trial by the press has been institutionally regulated to be avoided by journalists, especially in Law 40/1999, Journalistic Code of Ethics from the Press Council, PWI, and AJI. However, journalistic ethical principles in institutional regulations are no longer compatible with the working mechanisms of online media, thus creating a dilemma for online media journalists to choose between the two. However, online media journalists do not view institutional regulations and online media working mechanisms as dualism in the practice of online journalism. Their experience in elaborating institutional regulations and online media working mechanisms can minimize the occurrence of trials by the press. We concluded that contextual and situational elaboration of institutional regulations and working mechanisms of online media can produce an authentic meaning for journalists to avoid trial by the press in online media.

Abstract

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has become a humanitarian tragedy and is in the spotlight of the world's mass media. This research seeks to determine the framing of the coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki's analysis model. Two leading online media, detik.com and republika.co.id, were selected as research objects because they have a long history, different audiences, and contrasting approaches to reporting, which reflect their views and handling of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is a qualitative study; data was collected through observation, documentation, and literature study. The analysis results found that detik.com and republika.co.id syntactically present the facts clearly; the script fulfills the 5W + 1H elements with credible source quotes. The thematic structure of detik.com emphasizes the number of victims due to Israeli attacks on Palestine. The rhetorical structure of detik.com contains idioms and displays photos relevant to the news content. The thematic structure of republika.co.id emphasizes the form of Israeli attacks on the Jabalia Refugee Camp. The rhetorical structure contains idioms and photos relevant to the news content. Detik.com frames the news by using the figurative word "bak neraka dunia” (like hell on earth) so that it seems dramatized in its point of view, while republika.co.id is more straightforward in writing sentences and reporting.

Abstract

The new phase of the State Capital Relocation (IKN) began in 2019, after President Joko Widodo inaugurated that Indonesia's capital would move to East Kalimantan. The relocation has been ongoing since then and has entered the infrastructure development stage. However, beyond the grandeur of the IKN construction, many aspects have been affected. This research aims to understand how the examined media construct discourse on capital relocation. This research employs a qualitative method, utilizing Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model. Discourse analysis is conducted through three stages: text analysis, discourse practice analysis, and sociocultural analysis.  Data collection methods were carried out using observation techniques, documentation studies through television media reporting, and in-depth interviews with informants representing Trans TV, Kompas TV, SCTV and NET. The research results in the text dimension indicate that the majority of the reporting is not in favour of the government's decision to relocate the capital because it is considered rushed in planning and has various negative impacts. In the discourse practice dimension, the reporting is heavily influenced by the media's socio-economic status (SES) in shaping the discourse. In the sociocultural dimension, it is shown that the capital relocation is one of the political strategies, and there is disagreement among various parties regarding the relocation. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the examined media should present balanced reporting and provide a balanced perspective in their coverage. Furthermore, caution is needed from the media to avoid being influenced by external media domination, ensuring that the information reported is accountable and prioritizes the public interest.

Abstract

Tanah Datar, known for its rich Minangkabau cultural heritage and dedication to the philosophy of Kitabullah, is facing a disturbing trend. Despite its deep-rooted religious values, Densus88 has reported that the city has the second-highest number of NII terrorist personnel in West Sumatra. This revelation exposes a stark contrast between Tanah Datar's cultural identity and terrorism reports. The government must act to prevent further misconceptions. This research aimed to evaluate the distribution and focus of content related to terrorism on internal and external media sources and the government's approach to countering these issues. The study employed content analysis to examine the news by the Tanah Datar Regency government. This study applied a content analysis approach by Kripendorff, which involved three stages: crawling, coding, and abstracting. In the first phase of analysis, the study found 50 units of data from internal sources and 229 from external sources. The research findings indicated that news related to terrorism in Tanah Datar is only found in external media sources. The top three counter-issues pursued by the government include government branding with 158 posts (69%), and tourism impressions with 16 posts (7%). and health literacy with 11 posts (4.8%). The government has adopted an unconventional approach to address terrorism issues. Rather than reporting such issues on official channels, they opt to utilize media partners, offering an alternative strategy to tackle terrorism.

Abstract

Riau Province, as the habitat for almost one-third of the Sumatran tiger population, continues to grapple with the challenges of human-wildlife conflict. Mass media pays particular attention to cases of conflict involving protected animals, especially if such conflicts result in fatal casualties, as seen in the case of Tasik Tebing Serai Village. This research aims to critically analyze the media discourse construction related to this conflict, which can influence public awareness, community attitudes, and even policy responses. The critical discourse analysis method by Teun van Dijk is employed to identify text structures, social cognition, and social contexts in the news published by national and local media, namely detik.com and riaupos.co, reporting on the conflict in Tasik Tebing Serai Village, Riau Province. The research findings indicate that despite mass media presenting factual information, they need to catch up in providing education, a fundamental principle of environmental journalism. Detik.com leans towards utilizing the "rewrite" method to increase its publication quantity, whereas riaupos.co focuses more on presenting diverse topics. Both media have their own dramatic and sensational characteristics in delivering the news by utilizing the word of choice to catch the reader's attention to the issue. This study delves into a deeper understanding of the importance of reporting environmental issues with environmental journalism principles to enhance public awareness, understanding, and responsibility regarding environmental problems.

Abstract

This study seeks to contribute to the emerging studies on fact-checking practices in the Global South by focusing on Indonesia, one of the largest democratic countries in the world. An organization and grassroots movement called MAFINDO (Masyarakat Anti Fitnah Indonesia/the Indonesian Anti-Defamation Society) has been spearheading fact-checking practices in Indonesia by operating a website “turnbackhoax.id” containing fact-checked articles including on misinformation spread through WhatsApp. This research uses content analysis to examine a diverse array of WhatsApp-related misinformation verified by MAFINDO, spanning from July 2015 to July 2020. Our findings reveal that politics and everyday occurrences, or trivial issues top the charts of WhatsApp-related misinformation, with nearly half primarily existing in the text format. Notably, the originators of this misinformation remain unknown, and MAFINDO primarily utilizes news articles for verification. Furthermore, we assess the "fact-check worthiness" of WhatsApp misinformation comparing it to a traditional "worthiness" from the notion of news values and "public priority issues" and found that over half of the misinformation falls within these categories. We hope these findings can inform strategies and interventions aimed at addressing the propagation of misinformation within the confines of enclosed platforms such as WhatsApp.
