Abstract

Background: The popularity of esports in Indonesia has driven the emergence of esports journalism as an integral part of sports journalism. Unlike traditional sports, esports grew out of gaming culture, which makes esports journalism a distinctive practice. In Indonesia, this phenomenon has driven various digital-native media outlets focused on esports coverage. However, studies on how local media manage their editorial and business operations in this field remain limited. Purpose: This research explored how IndoGamers–one of the pioneers of esports media in Indonesia–performs its newsroom and business management functions. Methods: It used a case study method with primary data collected through interviews with four members of the newsroom team, along with secondary data, analyzed using the POAC management model (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, and Controlling). Results: The results show that the editorial process no longer relies on conventional news values but is entirely driven by Google trends and SEO logic. Nevertheless, IndoGamers provides in-depth news coverage, especially concerning the benefits of esports. Therefore, it does not merely portray esports as a form of entertainment. The division of journalistic tasks based on specific game specializations–without involving external contributors–demonstrates the dominance of platform logic in newsroom management. Conclusion: These findings affirm that esports journalism requires a management model responsive to data, real-time trends, and digital visibility demands. It offers theoretical and practical contributions to digital media studies and newsroom management in the algorithm era. Implications: Thus, IndoGamers’ practice of aligning editorial decisions with Google search trends and SEO logic demonstrates that data-driven strategies function not only to increase traffic, but also as a mechanism to maintain the relevance and accessibility of educational esports coverage while simultaneously fostering more positive and socially valuable narratives for audiences.

Abstract

Background: The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria has prompted various national and international media outlets to reveal how they, with different geopolitical positions, construct contrasting narratives despite covering the same events. Purpose: This research reveals how two international online media outlets with different geopolitical backgrounds, BBC News Arabic and AlHadath, frame the issue in response to key figures who were fully involved in the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Methods: This study used Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which comprises four elements: defining problems; diagnosing causes, making moral judgment; and treatment recommendations. Data collection was conducted using observation and note-taking techniques, with primary data from two news videos: “Assad Speaks for the First Time after His Fall” from BBC News Arabic and “President of the Syrian National Coalition: I Announce the Fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s Regime” from AlHadath. The secondary data consisted of scientific articles, journals, and books. Results: The study shows that BBC News Arabic defines the problem as political instability caused by an endless civil war and external political pressure. Thus, this media outlet remains neutral by emphasizing diplomatic adjustments. Meanwhile, AlHadath defines the problem as the fall of a dictatorial regime that oppresses the people and civilians due to popular resistance. Clearly, this media outlet criticizes the Assad regime and advocates for a transition of power to the opposition. Conclusion: These findings explain how the media works to reveal fundamental domination and institutional bias. The difference between these two frames shows the ideological situation and geopolitical objectives of the two media outlets. Implications: This study shows that framing in the media is a strategic tool designed to sway public opinion in the interest of political legitimacy.
Reporting Indonesia’s New E-Cigarette/Tobacco Regulation (PP 28/2024): Public-Health vs Industry Frames

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s PP 28/2024 reshapes controls on tobacco and e-cigarette products, making news coverage a crucial venue where policy meaning is constructed. Prior research on media framing and health communication indicates competition between public-health frames (risk, youth protection, efficacy) and industry frames (jobs, costs, consumer choice), motivating hypotheses about outlet differences, headline–body congruence, source–frame coupling, and timing shifts. Purpose: To describe the balance of public-health versus industry frames in Indonesian online news on PP 28/2024 and assess headline–body alignment, sourcing patterns, and early temporal trends. Methods: Quantitative content analysis (unit: article) across five major outlets, August 2024–August 2025; codebook for dominant frame, headline frame, tone, source mix, and evidence cues; 15% double-coding planned (target κ ≥ 0.70); χ² with Cramér’s V, McNemar tests, descriptive tables, and a monthly trend line as primary outcomes. Results: A 10-item pilot (five outlets) found industry frames 6/10 (60%) and public-health frames 4/10 (40%); headline–body agreement was 10/10 (100%). Outlet × frame association was χ² = 10.000, p = .075, Cramér’s V = .707. Public-health–framed pieces more often referenced primary law; later coverage tilted toward economic and compliance narratives, consistent with framing theory and efficacy-timing expectations. No adverse events apply. Conclusion: Early coverage shows competitive framing with strong headline integrity but uneven verification of economic claims. Full-sample analysis will test outlet differences and source–frame coupling and inform practice on mirroring legal specifics, balancing sources, and sustaining risk-and-efficacy context. Implications: Newsrooms should strengthen verification by linking rule-based stories to relevant PP 28/2024 provisions, adding minimal context for numerical claims using official data, and diversifying expert sources to support evidence-based public understanding.

Abstract

Background: Digital disruption has changed the global broadcasting landscape, shifting radio from a rigid terrestrial medium to a more fluid multiplatform ecosystem. Although digital platforms dominate the attention economy, radio in Indonesia has shown unique resilience by combining legacy trust with digital network-based interaction. Purpose: This study aims to reformulate radio content distribution strategies and explain how radio management adapts to the logic of platformisation in the digital age. Methods: This research used a multi-site qualitative approach with case studies on three types of radio stations in Indonesia. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and reinforced with digital ethnography. Results: The results show that radio's sustainability is supported by three main pillars. First, algorithmic grooming, which is a radio strategy to tailor content to the logic of visual platform algorithms. Second, distributional decoupling, where radio identity no longer depends entirely on physical frequencies. Third, the utilization of radio as a ‘human infrastructure’ that builds emotional closeness and parasocial interaction with the audience. This study also found the important role of radio in regional areas as a backup information medium when digital networks are disrupted. Conclusion: This study concludes that the revival of radio has occurred through its transformation from a frequency provider to a flexible and adaptive ‘everywhere media’ entity. Implications: Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of media convergence theory by emphasizing that strategic fluidity, the ability to operate across digital and terrestrial boundaries, is key to radio's resilience in the digital age.

Abstract

Background: For several decades, Islam and Muslims have frequently been associated with terrorism in international media, including films, despite the fact that Islam neither teaches nor endorses acts of terrorism. Purpose: This article seeks to clarify that Islam is not a religion that endorses terrorism or terrorist acts. More specifically, it explores the brief history of terrorism, elucidates the Islamic perspective on terrorism, and argues that terrorist acts may arise, in part, from negative media labelling by powerful actors. Methods: This study employs a desk-based research method. Results: The findings suggest that terrorism frequently emerges from political, social, or economic repression. Although some acts of terrorism have been perpetrated by groups identifying with religious causes, terrorism is not prescribed by any religion. Islamic teachings, in particular, explicitly condemn terrorism. However, when certain Muslim groups are labelled as terrorists, their reactionary behavior may stem from negative labelling and perceived unjust treatment. Such groups are often portrayed as terrorists by international media, including films, in response to their harsh reactions despite experiencing various forms of oppression. Conclusion: Islam does not endorse terrorism; therefore, acts of terrorism should not be attributed to the teachings of Islam or to Muslims as a whole. Implications: International media and Western countries—particularly the United States—should reevaluate their policies and adopt more balanced approaches toward Muslim communities by examining the underlying factors that motivate some groups to resort to terrorist methods out of frustration or desperation.
