Abstract

The background for this study is rooted in the observed challenges in developing robust literacy skills in young learners, coupled with the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia that offers unique and engaging learning opportunities. This literature study investigates the potential of integrating traditional Indonesian wayang performances and the act of listening to folk tales as pedagogical tools to enhance literacy among elementary school students. The primary objective was to explore how these traditional art forms can be systematically incorporated into the elementary school curriculum to foster reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and critical thinking. As a literature review, the research method involved a comprehensive synthesis of existing scholarly articles, educational reports, and cultural studies pertaining to traditional storytelling, drama, and their impact on cognitive development and literacy. The findings suggest that both wayang and folk tales provide immersive narrative experiences that stimulate imagination, improve listening skills, and introduce a wide range of vocabulary and cultural concepts relevant to the curriculum. Furthermore, engaging with these art forms can cultivate a positive attitude towards reading and learning. In conclusion, the study advocates for the strategic integration of wayang and folk tales into elementary education as an effective and culturally sensitive approach to significantly improve students' literacy levels.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the principal’s managerial competence in improving teacher performance by examining three main variables, namely X1 (planning ability), X2 (organizing ability), and X3 (supervisory ability). The research method employed is a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collection techniques including questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The population of this study consists of all teachers at the school under investigation, while the sample is determined using purposive sampling techniques. The data are analyzed using multiple regression analysis to determine the effect of each variable X1, X2, and X3 on Y (teacher performance). The results of the study indicate that the three variables of the principal’s managerial competence have a positive and significant effect on improving teacher performance. The X1 variable (planning) provides the greatest contribution, followed by X2 (organizing) and X3 (supervision). This finding demonstrates that principals who are capable of developing strategic plans, effectively organizing school resources, and conducting continuous supervision can enhance teachers’ motivation and professionalism in carrying out their duties. Therefore, improving the principal’s managerial competence becomes a key factor in achieving optimal educational quality.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the fact that students' exploration skills in science learning are still relatively low because learning tends to be teacher-centered. This study aims to improve students' exploration skills through the application of the inquiry learning model in science learning. This study is a classroom action research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, with stages of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were fifth-grade students at SDN 03 Gedong. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The results showed that students' exploration skills increased from 62% in cycle I to 86% in cycle II. In addition, the students' IPAS learning outcomes also increased from 65% in cycle I to 88% in cycle II. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the application of the inquiry learning model can improve the exploration skills and IPAS learning outcomes of elementary school students.

Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the main challenges for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners, especially in rural areas with limited access to authentic communication and digital technology. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in improving the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Nurul Huda Al Maroniyah Sampang. This research employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design with a total of 30 students as participants. The research procedure consisted of a pretest, three weeks of treatment using Duolingo, and a posttest. The main research instrument was a speaking test that assessed five aspects: fluency, grammar and accuracy, pronunciation, vocabulary use, and comprehensibility, scored on a 1–5 Likert scale. Data from the pretest and posttest were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test via SPSS 25 to determine the statistical significance, and effect size was calculated to measure the magnitude of improvement. The results revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking skills (p = 0.000) with a very large effect size (r = 0.861). These findings indicate that Duolingo can be an effective, engaging, and practical tool for developing speaking skills in resource-limited educational contexts, particularly in rural Islamic junior high schools in Indonesia. Future studies are recommended to explore the combination of Duolingo with live speaking practice or compare its effectiveness with other mobile-assisted language learning applications.
