Abstract

This article discusses and examines the use of figurative language and the meaning contained in the lyrics of the songs entitled 'Runtuh' and 'Usik' by Feby Putri. Feby Putri's songs are often considered a reflection of reality or facts, addressing problems commonly faced by teenagers and adults. Therefore, these things can be motivation and learning tools for the millennial generation to better understand and overcome the various challenges they face. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Based on observations, the song 'Runtuh' by Feby contains 4 comparative figurative meanings, while the song 'Usik' uses 3 comparative figurative meanings and 1 example of metaphorical language. These songs are created poetically with meaningful symbolism. The song 'Runtuh' reminds us not to deceive ourselves and to remain honest with our feelings even though it is difficult. This describes the feelings of someone who always looks happy but actually has a hurt heart. On the other hand, the song 'Usik' conveys the message not to give up and continue to struggle to overcome challenges, to emerge as an individual who is stronger, more resilient, and believes in God's presence.

Abstract

In this digital era, many scholars have reported the effectiveness of digital educational platforms in teaching English grammar. However, little research has utilized digital media, such as YouTube videos and the Quizizz platform, to teach TOEFL grammar. To fill this gap, this research aims to investigate the effect of and students’ perceptions of these two platform interventions on students’ grammar mastery for TOEFL. This experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design was applied to students of the Registration Certificate for Nutrition program at the Bengkulu Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health, consisting of 42 persons. The data of this research were the grammar tests given in the pre-test and post-test and the students’ perception questionnaire. A non-parametric Wilcoxon test using SPSS package version 16 and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The result indicates that students’ grammar mastery for TOEFL preparation improved after giving interventions using YouTube and Quizizz platforms. Moreover, the results show students overwhelmingly perceive YouTube videos and Quizizz quizzes as highly effective for improving their grammar mastery for TOEFL preparation. They strongly believe their understanding of grammar improves and express high motivation, confidence, engagement, and effectiveness in applying and remembering grammar concepts. In brief, this result emphasizes the efficacy of utilizing multimedia resources and interactive platforms within educational settings, particularly in teaching English grammar. It is suggested instructors are encouraged to incorporate YouTube videos and Quizizz quizzes into TOEFL preparation courses to boost grammar mastery, leveraging multimedia resources for enhanced learning outcomes in the digital era.

Abstract

The dearth of English textbooks used as teaching resources for junior high school students at Islamic Boarding Schools (IBS) in West Sumatera, Indonesia, is the driving force behind the current study. The goal of this research is to develop an IBS English textbook. Using Sukmadinata's theory, research and development were used in this study. The phases are divided into three phases: need analysis, design, and validation. Interviews and document analysis were used to gather data. Teachers require an English textbook for instruction, according to the results of the need analysis. The textbook is meticulously created during the design phase to satisfy the demands of both teachers and students. Topics including greeting, school activities, dorm activities, sports, scout extracurricular activities, minimarket, mosque activities, and before bed are covered in the textbook along with Islamic principles and local culture. On the other hand, the activities are cheerfully and easily designed. For instance, completing crossword puzzles, matching words, and responding to simple inquiries. Additionally, the textbook made use of vibrant pictures to grab students' interest and expand their understanding. The textbook was accepted as true. The English textbook could be utilized to teach English for IBS in West Sumatera in light of these findings.

Abstract

Speaking ability among English as a foreign language learners (EFL) is influenced by various factors, including cognitive diversity that encompasses individual differences in cognitive styles, information processing, problem-solving approaches, and learning preferences. This study investigated the relationship between cognitive diversity and speaking abilities among English Education students at the University of Bengkulu. Using a quantitative correlational approach with 30 students, cognitive diversity was measured through a questionnaire, and speaking ability was assessed via oral presentations. The data analysis involved calculating Simpson's Diversity Index to measure cognitive diversity levels, Cohen's Kappa to assess the inter-rater agreement on speaking ability scores, and Pearson's correlation analysis to determine the relationship between cognitive diversity and speaking ability. Findings revealed a positive but weak correlation (r=0.244, p=0.193) between the variables. While aligning with some prior research on individual cognitive differences in language acquisition, the modest correlation contradicts other findings on cognitive styles' influence on speaking ability among EFL learners. This dissimilarity may arise from sample size, student population characteristics, and other factors like instructional approaches and affective variables. The study emphasizes the importance of taking cognitive diversity into account, along with other factors, to optimize holistic development in EFL-speaking.

Abstract

Digital Game-based learning has been investigated to find the effective teaching strategy and media. However, little empirical evidence addresses how Bamboozle, a web-based game app, promotes language learners' behavioral, affective, social, and cognitive engagement. This study utilized an exploratory case study; seventy-eight EFL students participated in a gamified online course using Bamboozle. They were selected by cluster random sampling technique. This study revealed that the participants were engaged and actively involved in the teaching and learning process. In addition, it is found that students' engagement increased and they were motivated to learn interactive speaking. As the results showed that the students enjoyed the learning process, they were motivated. The students were involved in active participation and discussions. In addition, they were active in collaborative projects. According to the findings, the majority of students have a good opinion of the concept of Bamboozle as a game-based application. The participants were posted in three categories, namely: the highly engaged, the moderately engaged, and the lowly engaged. The higher they engage the better performance that they have in learning English, especially Interactive speaking. The findings suggest the utilization of digital game-based in EFL classrooms should focus more on critical thinking and problem-solving techniques. The implication extends to the broader context of EFL education in a higher learning context, highlighting the integration of Bamboozle as a game-based application to enhance the student’s motivation, and engagement and help to more easily understand the lesson.

Abstract

Since writing is a competency that prepares students to complete all of their assignments and their thesis by the end of their university studies, learning it becomes imperative. This study aims to explore how L1 interference affects the language use, accuracy, and structure of reflective journals written by EFL students. It will also investigate the types of L1 interference that are most common in EFL students’ reflective journals and how these interferences affect their writing. The study also aims to provide insights into the challenges that EFL students face in writing reflective journals in English and identify effective strategies for addressing these challenges. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach with case study which is in descriptive. Results showed that Limited vocabulary is the most common sort of lexical and syntactical interference, followed in that sequence by word order, sentence structure, literal translation, verb tense and agreement, articles (a, an, and the), and false friends. Since limited vocabulary accounts for a sizable portion of interference cases 69 in total and it is the most prevalent kind. The main issue that pupils have is that they have trouble using the right words. This suggests that while expressing themselves in English, children frequently utilize phrases that might not be appropriate or have a restricted vocabulary.
