Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of writing scientific articles for academics. The importance of this writing activity in the end led to the rapidly increasing of scientific article writing training in various institutions. The existence and success of the training is of course based on indicators of training implementation, one of which is the pedagogical communication strategy developed by tutors or resource persons. This is important because communication or the use of appropriate language is believed to melt the mental blocks that writers often experience. This study aims to describe the use of pedagogical communication in scientific article writing training. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data sources in the form of pedagogical communication in scientific article writing training. The research instrument used was a word observation sheet with data collection through video observation and drawing conclusions based on interventions resulting from data analysis. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively by coding, describing and interpreting the data. The analysis indicators are based on pedagogical communication aspects, including 1) clarity, 2) fluency, 3) language systematics, 4) quality of interaction, and 5) use of written language. The result obtained is that pedagogical communication does not always have to be interactive or two-way or multi-directional, as long as the five aspects of pedagogical communication are met.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of social media use on vocabulary learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) among Indonesian first-semester EFL learners. The researchers used a research design grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and employed a questionnaire to collect data via Google Forms involving 176 participants. The participants of the study (N=176) consisted of 103 men (59%) and 73 women (41%). The findings revealed that social media can be an effective tool for vocabulary learning and identified factors within social media platforms that contribute to or hinder the effectiveness of vocabulary learning for EFL students at one private university in Jakarta. This study identified the factors of safety and privacy, ease of access and navigation, quality and relevant content, interactivity and participation, and constructive feedback. A key implication of this study is that integrating social media into language learning curricula can serve as a powerful strategy to improve vocabulary retention and student engagement in a digital age. This approach not only leverages the familiarity and accessibility of social media but also aligns with contemporary educational practices. Future studies could explore several avenues, including the long-term effects of social media engagement on vocabulary retention, the specific features of social media that contribute most to vocabulary learning, the comparative effectiveness of different social media platforms, and investigate the impact of social media on other language skills, such as reading comprehension and writing proficiency, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of its role in language education.

Using a mixed-methods approach with combain boyh quantitative and qualitative research methods, the study provided both quantitative and qualitative evidence supporting the effectiveness of these tools. The instrument used was a standardized writing test designed to evaluate grammatical accuracy, syntactical complexity, and vocabulary range. For English Language Learners (ELL), there was a notable improvement in writing skills, with average test scores increasing from 65 to 80. Additionally, there was a 40% reduction in grammatical and syntactical errors and a 30% enhancement in vocabulary usage. Similarly, Indonesian Language Learners (ILL) experienced a rise in test scores from 60 to 75, a 35% reduction in errors, and a 25% improvement in vocabulary usage. These results underscore the benefits of AI tools in language education. In conclusion, AI-assisted tools have proven to be highly effective in improving paragraph writing skills for foreign students learning English and Indonesian. The combination of quantitative improvements in writing proficiency and positive qualitative feedback from students highlights the transformative potential of AI in language education. By providing personalized, real-time, and contextually appropriate feedback, AI tools can significantly enhance the learning experience and outcomes for foreign students.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental skill in English learning; nevertheless, many English learners encounter challenges in comprehending English texts. Thus, providing students with effective reading strategies is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of semantic mapping on improving students' reading comprehension. Using a quasi-experimental design, the research targeted first-semester students from the Tarbiyah Faculty and Teacher Training at the English Department UINSU, who were specifically selected as participants. Data was gathered using the TOEFL reading test, and analysis was performed with SPSS version 21 IBM, including frequency, mean score, normality test, and nonparametric tests (Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon test). The findings showed that using semantic mapping as a teaching method significantly improved students' reading performance. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed a notable difference between the mean scores of the experimental group using semantic mapping and the control group without it (42.3 > 32.3). Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group's scores from the pretest (29.5) to the post-test (42.3). In summary, semantic mapping seems to enhance students' reading comprehension.
