Abstract

This article aims to identify deixis found in the speech of Ed Sheeran “Embrace Your Weirdness” particularly to analyze the most dominant used deixis. This research used a qualitative method with data collected from the English Speech video of Ed Sheeran’s “Embrace Your Weirdness”. The analysis analysis found 128 that, according to the five types of deixis, consist of 102 personal words, five spatial words, 10 temporal words, 10 discourse words, and one social word. The most dominant deixis was Personal Deixis with 80%. The most dominant deixis was personal deixis with 80%. it can be concluded the most dominant words used in speech was personal deixis related to the personal deixis as represented of the speaker as the main person of their speech dialog. The result will be depends on speech context it proved from the use of first person singular and plural such as “I” for the person and “we” or “our” to represent an agency or organization.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the predominant deixis and the form of deixis found in the famous band Stars and Rabbit song "Man Upon The Hill". This study uses a qualitative method, data collection using document analysis techniques is done by reading, and writing. This study collected the data by doing the following: First, the researcher listened to the songs, second the researcher searched the internet for scripts for the lyrics of the song, third the researcher selected lyrics to analyze, fourth the researcher marked all the lyrics selected for analysis. After collecting the data from the lyrics script, the researcher analyzes the data are as follows: First, the researcher identifies several phrases that include deictic phrases. Second, the researcher classifies the identified deictic expressions according to their criteria. Third, the researcher analyzes the types of deixis. The results showed that there are three kinds of deixis in the lyrics of the song "Man Upon The Hill" that is person deixis in table 1, spatial deixis in table 2, and discourse deixis in table 3. However, the most common kinds of deixis used in the song "Man Upon the Hill" is a person deixis with 21 data. Compared with spatial deixis which consists of five words, and discourse deixis which consists of two words. So, that's what this song means, that's what the vocals experience.

Abstract

This study pursuits to have a look at the relationship among vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of class eleventh grade students. The approach used on this examine is a quantitative research method with a correlational design. This examine used vocabulary mastery test and analyzing comprehension test as instruments to collect data. Before testing the relationship between the two variables, a normality test was conducted. The results showed that the data were normally distributed so that the analysis continued statistically using Pearson Product Moment. While the Pearson correlation reached a point of 0.896 which means the correlation between the two is very large. Regarding the results of the study, it concluded that vocabulary mastery has a positive contribution to reading comprehension. In other words, that vocabulary knowledge has influenced in selecting some reading comprehension teaching methods.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the implementation of teaching reading using a scientific approach through the Whatsapp application. The participants in this study were 9th grade students at one of the junior high schools in Parongpong. The research method used in this study was Qualitative research, and to obtain data, the instruments used in this study were lesson plan and questionnaire. The data of the research show that the implementation of teaching reading using scientific approach through WhatsApp application did not go well, where several difficulties arose such as the difficulty of students in accessing smartphones, students being overwhelmed by the number of assignments from several different class groups, and also the five stages of the scientific approach which took a lot of time. Then the results also show that the use of scientific methods can improve students' higher order thinking. Although the use of the WhatsApp application is widely used for learning due to the pandemic, there needs to be further research and solutions to overcome these shortcomings.

Abstract

The increasing sophistication of life, particularly in academic and educational fields, has led to the evolution of digital recording media, such as podcasts.  Podcasts offer various topics and channels, making them suitable for learning and developing students' listening skills.  This research aimed to portray podcast implementation as a learning tool for English club students, using a qualitative method to collect data.  This research was administered to 15 students of an English club at a senior high school.  This research used qualitative methods.  The instrument employed in this research was observation with field notes.  The study describes the process of podcast integration in teaching listening skills to English club students through three stages covering: pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity.  The pre-activity showed the teacher introducing the material and providing trigger questions at the beginning regarding listening skills using a podcast medium.  The students were active in responding, answering, and asking questions.  In the whilst-activity, the teacher implemented a podcast to clarify the speaker's message and help students understand the material.  Then, she provided directions when carrying out the lesson; students were given directions to understand what the speakers said and write down important points from the podcast.  In the Post-activity, students can present the main points of podcast material dealing with ‘the right way to say sorry.’ Then, students and teachers carry out a reflection activity and conclude from what they have learned.

Abstract

This study aims to identify students' responses to the use of a project-based approach in teaching writing narrative text. This research was conducted in a junior high school in Cimahi involving 23 students of grade VIII as the research subjects. The method used was qualitative research with a data collection technique through the questionnaire. The data were analyzed both qualitatively using Miles & Huberman (1992) data analysis framework and quantitatively only in sum and percentage. The results showed that the use of a project-based approach was positive toward students' motivation and involvement in the writing learning process. Students feel more motivated and challenged to write because they can work collaboratively in groups and have the opportunity to develop their creative ideas. Meanwhile, students' negative responses to the use of the project-based approach were that they were still confused about the demands and steps to be taken in completing the project.  This caused them to feel less confident in completing the project well. The data from the questionnaire shows that using project-based learning in teaching writing provides benefits in learning English writing skills. Therefore, using project-based learning in teaching narrative text writing can improve students' writing ability.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the strategies used by students to build their confidence in speaking English. In this study, the participants of this study were 11 students from the English Education study program at Universitas Muhammadiyah of Makassar. This research employed a qualitative method, where data was obtained through interviews with participants to explore their experiences and strategies in overcoming anxiety. The results showed that the students used various approaches such as independent practice, the use of audio-visual media, simulations, group discussions, and also the use of gestures. Through these strategies, many students were helped in overcoming anxiety and also made them more confident when speaking in public. Through self-practice, students can expand their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, and prepare themselves to speak spontaneously in real situations. Meanwhile, the use of audio-visual media such as learning videos and technology-based applications also has a significant impact on supporting the learning process. This research has made an important contribution by highlighting students' active participation in finding ways to build their confidence independently. The research recommends further exploration of the long-term impact of this strategy on students' speaking ability in various contexts.

Abstract

As professional teachers, teachers are expected to be able to produce scientific works by conducting research, not only experimental but also classroom action research (CAR). Henceforth, from their research, they are expected to be able to produce a scientific article and publish it in reputable national or international journals. Due to the importance of scientific articles for the teachers’ career, therefore, this study aims to describe the profile of secondary school English teachers’ competencies in writing a scientific article. By using a rubric adapted from CARS model, it was found out that they still got many difficulties in writing a good scientific article. Those difficulties cover constructing and developing the introduction section which comprises general background information about the phenomenon being investigated, the results of relevant previous studies and theoretical framework, research gaps, novelty, and research objectives; elaborating the research method and discussion which refers to the results of relevant theories and previous studies; and neglecting the use of the last ten-year references. Regarding those unsatisfactory results, therefore, it is strongly suggested for the them to learn deeper by having more practices and trainings or workshops on conducting research and writing scientific articles as the output of their research.

Abstract

Many junior high school students struggle to learn English and are unmotivated, especially when it comes to learn report texts, which are frequently thought of as boring. By using the Learning Station paradigm to improve academic achievement and motivation, this classroom action research sought to solve this problem. The study, which used pre-tests, post-tests, observation and interviews, was carried out in Class 9C at SMP Negeri 1 Karawang Timur over the course of two instructional cycles. The results showed that student outcomes had significantly improved, with average scores increasing from 64.08 to 77.76 and higher levels of desire and motivation. The Learning Station approach to learn report text made the classroom lively and fun by alternating activities between reading, writing, discussion, and interactive stations. Students expressed increased confidence and motivation.

Abstract

Reading ability is an important basic skill in the English language learning process. Reading not only helps students expand their vocabulary but also increases their understanding of language structures. However, many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students still experience difficulties in effectively comprehending the content of reading passages, which impacts the development of their overall language skills. This research aimed to increase reading comprehension of narrative text by looking at the effectiveness of the Repeated Reading technique. The design used was quasi-experimental, involving sixty students of SMA Hasanuddin Wajak. The sample was divided into two groups: the experimental group, which received Repeated Reading treatment, and the control group, which did not receive Repeated Reading treatment. The instrument used in this study was a multiple-choice instrument. The data that had been obtained was analysed quantitatively using an independent sample t-test. The results stated a significant difference between students who received treatment and students who did not receive treatment. The value of (P = .000 < .05) shows that the use of the Repeated Reading method in the learning process of narrative text increases students' reading comprehension.
