Abstract

Israel's genocidal actions today are increasingly massive in Palestine, which are supported by European media that have the same vision as Israeli Jews. This research aims to analyze how these European media support the Israeli genocide through propaganda disseminated in the form of news. To answer this research question, a descriptive qualitative approach is used to analyze the form of propaganda in European media. The findings of this study show that European media support the genocide by Israel through propaganda, such as deceiving facts about the Israeli genocide and the use of manipulative rhetoric to construct the diction of terrorism that is considered a Hamas group. From these two findings, it can be illustrated that European media not only spread news of conflict in the Middle East but also contributed to spreading propaganda to support genocide by Israel. This study's findings aim to further dialogue in communication science and media propaganda, serving as a reference for identifying and analyzing propaganda patterns used by countries. In other words, understanding the forms of media propaganda worldwide can minimize media bias or hidden agendas targeted at the international community.

Abstract

Gender inequality in education remains a persistent issue, with boys and girls often facing different expectations, opportunities, and treatment within learning environments. This research focuses on gender equality between girls and boys in the context of inclusive education, aiming to identify empowerment patterns that address barriers to educational access. Using quantitative methods, data were collected through questionnaires completed by students at the elementary and junior high school levels. Analysis was conducted to understand the challenges of gender disparities in educational participation. The results indicate significant differences in participation between male and female students, with boys dominating in high-intensity physical sports and girls more engaged in the arts. Additionally, there were differences in teachers' attitudes towards students based on gender. This study aims to create empowerment strategies and more inclusive education policies, providing guidance for policymakers and educational practitioners to support gender equality in the education sector.

Abstract

The rise of TikTok as one of the most popular social media platforms and its significant influence on Gen Z has attracted the attention of many parties. However, the impact of TikTok on gender norms, lifestyles, and cultural shifts among Generation Z is still limited, especially in a local context. This article, on the other hand, will explore these issues within the context of East Java. As an exploratory study, this research employs a qualitative approach, involving 20 female students (Gen Z) as participants. Data were collected through unstructured group interviews in four cities in East Java (Surabaya, Malang, Jember, and Mojokerto) and focus group discussions (FGD). The results of this study indicate that TikTok, on one hand, still reinforces conventional gender norms, particularly through video content focused on beauty. However, in terms of lifestyle, TikTok has become a mirror for many members of Generation Z, the majority of whom adhere to Islamic teachings, even among millennial religious figures. TikTok significantly influences Generation Z's lifestyle preferences and acts as a medium for cultural change. It serves as a social and cultural agent, impacting individuals and broader social structures.

Abstract

This article applies Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA) to Mona Lisa Smile (2003) to examine how nostalgic Hollywood cinema both reinscribes and subverts 1950s gender norms. Five strategically selected scenes (comprising 23 dialogue turns and accompanying visuals) were analysed using Lazar’s (2007) three-stage FCDA, supported by Eckert and McConnell-Ginet’s (2013) linguistic frameworks. The analysis reveals a sustained ambivalence, where feminist language is frequently undermined by visual and narrative conventions that re-centre domestic ideals. Drawing on Butler’s theory of performativity, Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic power, and audience reception studies (Radner 2021; Negra 2009), the study situates the film within broader patterns of postfeminist media. Comparative references to other "teacher films" and retro-set narratives illuminate how Mona Lisa Smile aligns with, yet diverges from, genre conventions in its ideological messaging. Findings suggest that patriarchal ideologies persist by assimilating the rhetoric of emancipation, highlighting the importance of teaching such films as contested texts. Implications for gender-sensitive media pedagogy and critical film literacy are discussed.

Abstract

This study examines the commodification of individuals with disabilities in advertisements by prominent fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, and Smarteyes Denmark. The research is grounded in the growing narrative of inclusivity within the fashion industry, which, on the one hand, opens up representational space, but on the other often masks visual exploitation. Using a semiotic approach, this study analyses how disabled bodies are constructed within the visual and discursive frameworks of fashion advertising. Findings reveal that such representations frequently combine disability with a superficial aesthetic of diversity, wherein disabled bodies are depicted not as complex subjects, but as empathetic objects commodified for brand image purposes. The study highlights the need for a critical reading of the interrelation between disability, gender, and power dynamics in the contemporary commercial media landscape.

Abstract

The phenomenon of Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV) has now become a global issue, along with the development of internet-based communication technology that provides easy access for many people. This condition often causes women to frequently become targets, resulting in losses in the form of physical, sexual, and psychological violence. These threats include acts of arbitrary deprivation of liberty in the public and private spheres. This study explores online gender-based violence and the impact of digital communication using Roland Barthes' semiotic model and qualitative visual ethnography. Key findings include: First, the video highlights direct messages received by the celebrity, including harassment and inappropriate content. Second, it reveals behaviours such as stereotypes, objectification of women, unwanted sexual advances, and the sharing of indecent images. Third, the underlying patriarchal culture reinforces the sexual objectification of women. This study aims to enhance understanding of online gender-based violence and contribute to semiotics and visual ethnography in this area.

Abstract

Rapid digital transformation has prompted organisations to improve digital maturity in response to increasingly complex cybersecurity challenges. This research aims to explore the relationship between digital maturity and the effectiveness of data security measures, with a bibliometric approach to analyze trends, patterns and gaps in related literature. Based on the literature review, digital maturity reflects the level of digital technology adoption integrated with organisational strategy and culture, which is shown to have a significant impact on strengthening data security measures. This study used a bibliometric analysis method based on data from Scopus, involving 315 documents analyzed with VOSviewer and RStudio software to visualize trends and relationships between key variables. The results show that organizations with high digital maturity tend to be more capable of implementing effective data security measures, such as encryption, multi-factor authentication, and cybersecurity frameworks. In addition, the adoption of technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) also contributes to increased resilience against cyber threats. However, the gap between theory and real applications remains a challenge, with the need for more applicable and contextualized models. This research provides important insights for policymakers and practitioners to support a secure and sustainable digital transformation.

Abstract

Netflix is a subscription-based video streaming platform that offers a selection of films and documentaries each month. During the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services experienced significant growth. This study examines the influence of Netflix media usage motivation on viewer satisfaction in East Java. It applies Guo and Chan-Olmsted’s Video Streaming Platform Representation Theory, McQuail’s Media Usage Motivation Theory, Blumer and Katz’s Uses and Gratification Theory, McMillan’s Interactivity Perception Theory, and Satisfaction Theory. Using a quantitative explanatory method, data were collected through an online questionnaire from 190 respondents and analysed using SPSS 26 and AMOS 22 with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results indicate that Video Streaming Platform Representation, Media Usage Motivation, and Perception of Interactivity significantly influence viewer satisfaction, both simultaneously and partially. Media usage motivation—covering information seeking, personal identity, social integration, and entertainment—shows the most substantial effect. Viewers are satisfied because Netflix provides engaging information about new films and opportunities for interaction among users. The novelty of this study lies in distinguishing new media like Netflix from mainstream media, emphasising how streaming platforms enable users to access entertainment and exchange film- related information within online communities.
