Abstract

The production of high quality seedlings is dependent on soil as planting media. Application of biochar derived from oil palm trunk onto oil palm seedling  has been scarcely studied, especially on ultisol planting media. This research investigated the effect of oil palm trunk biochar on vegetative growth and nutrient uptake of belowground and aboveground tissues of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) in ultisol pre-nursery planting media. Three types of oil palm trunk biochar derived from top, middle, and bottom section were used in this research. The application rates were 1, 2, 3 and, 4 % (w/w) during 12 weeks in  a green house. This experiment used a non factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. The addition of biochars derived oil palm trunk (OPT) amendment significantly increased stem diameter, plant height, root biomass, shoot biomass. The highest respon rasio (RRs) for root and shoot biomass was 0.40, and 0.55, respectively, recorded at 2% application rates. The highest increase of N, P, and K uptake for belowground and aboveground tissues were resulted from B3 (3 % biochar top section), B2 (2 % biochar top section), and B2 (2 % biochar top section) treatments, respectively. Overall, the addition of biochar derived top section OPT at 2 % (w/w) could enhance stem diameter, RRs plant biomass, N, P, K uptake of belowground and aboveground tissues. The addition of biochar OPT at 2 % (w/w) should be recommendation in order to used as rate of biochar OPT for ultisols ammendment in oil palm pre-nursery

Abstract

Background: Universities play a critical role in the development of urban ecosystems, which include artificial forests, parks, and green open spaces. Medan State University is one of the campuses in Medan City, North Sumatra, that boasts a significant amount of green open space. In order to identify and prioritize the conservation of woody plant species, data collection is necessary. Methodology: The method employed exploration, which involves the recording of all woody plants and their presentation in a qualitative descriptive format. Findings: The data on woody plants in the green open spaces of Medan State University are categorized into 2 subdivisions, 48 families, and 146 species, as indicated by the study's findings. Contribution: Protective plants, medicinal plants, spices, fresh fruits, and ornamental plants are all utilized. It is anticipated that the findings of this investigation will serve as a reference for future research on woody plants in urban green open spaces

Abstract

Background: Sea urchins are susceptible to environmental changes, including ones caused by anthropogenic activities in coastal area. They are commonly found in coral reef areas, seagrass beds, and mixed sand and coral rubble substrates. These marine ecosystems face critical problem as a result of water pollution, thus affecting their ecological roles as habitats for sea urchins. Pahawang Island is located in the Lampung Bay area and has substrate characteristics that are suitable for the habitat preferences of sea urchins. On the contrary, Pahawang Island becomes famous tourist destination and this can potentially cause damage to habitats of sea urchin. The purpose of this research is to identify sea urchin species (Echinoidea) in the intertidal zone of Pahawang Island, Lampung. Methodology: Samples were collected using surveying method by walking along the intertidal zone during low tide. Sampling locations include Jelarangan Hamlet, Suwak Buah Hamlet, Andreas Resort around Kalangan Hamlet, and Pahawang Hamlet. Sea urchins were identified based on morphological characteristics. Findings: Sea urchins found in the intertidal zone of Pahawang Island consist of four species: Echinothrix calamaris, Diadema setosum, and Diadema antillarum, and Mespilia globulus. E. calamaris and D. setosum were found on substrates such as seagrass beds, coral, and sand, while Diadema antillarum and Mespilia globulus were only found in waters with coral substrates. These four species of sea urchins inhabit diverse habitats and play important ecological roles in the ecosystem, even influencing the conditions of other benthic organism communities in intertidal zone of Pahawang Island. Contribution: This study provides baseline data on sea urchin species within specific area to later plan conservation strategies related to human-induced environmental changes.

Abstract

Background: Rice is a major food commodity for Indonesian. According to BPS (2022) rice production in 2021 decreased 0.43%. The decline caused by various factors, one of which is bacterial leaf blight disease by the pathogenic bacteria Xanthomonas oryzae. Control of X. oryzae mostly uses pesticides, but this control has a negative impact on the environment, therefore it is necessary to develop endophytic bacteria (EB) that can inhibit the growth of X. oryzae and can act as PGPR. This study was to determine the EB ability in healthy rice stem tissue to suppress bacterial leaf blight disease caused by the bacteria X. oryzae. Methodology: This research was were used isolation from infected plant for X. oryzae and from healthy plant for EB, data was analyzed using the corresponding formula. Findings: found 10 isolates of EB that could inhibit the X. oryzae growth as seen from the inhibition zone produced in the antagonist test. The EB isolates produced the largest inhibition zones such as BE18 (23.3 mm, very strong category), BE16 (13.3 mm, strong category), and BE3 (11.6 mm, strong category). The 4 isolates with bactericidal inhibition mechanisms, namely isolates (BE11, BE15, BE16, and BE18), 6 isolates with bacteriostatic inhibition mechanisms, namely isolates (BE3, BE5, BE6, BE7, BE12, and BE13). Contribution: The availability of EB present in the tissues of healthy rice stems is still relatively high and can be used to suppress the growth of pathogenic bacterium X. oryzae. This rseult also supported by the beneficial properties of EB, which can enhance plant resistance

Abstract

Based on interviews was conducted at Kartika I-2 Medan High School the biology teacher at Kartika I-2 Medan High School confirmed that there are currently no technology-based learning resources available to help biology students learn about the human digestive system, Furthermore, known that acquisition of the average of the mid-semester term score was 53.35. So that certain students experience boredom when learning, unfocused and less active in the learning process, it is also found that students lack understanding of several biology learning materials, one of which is the digestive system. This research was carried out on Kartika I-2 Medan High School which consists of 3 science class. The respondent of product test consists of 70 students in science class of second grade (XI-MIPA Class). The research instrument is a validity instrument, namely media/material expert validation. This learning media was developed through 4-D stages (Definition, Design, Development, Dissemination). Results showed that the application of augmented reality media to evaluate student motivation at Kartika I-2 Medan High School especially on the human digestive system. Media experts' validation results were 100% with very feasible criteria, while material experts' results revealed 93.5% with extremely viable criteria.  Thus, the learning process could take advantage of this augmented reality content.

Abstract

Background: this study is the low critical thinking skills of students and the limited learning models that can stimulate it optimally. This study aims to analyse the effect of STEM-based Project-Based Learning (PjBL) learning model assisted by mind mapping on students' critical thinking skills on cardiovascular system material. Methodology: This research used quasi-experimental method with research design using Pretest Postest Control Group Design. The research sample was XI MIPA class students with the experimental class getting the STEM-based PjBL model treatment assisted by mind mapping, and the control class using conventional learning. The research instrument was a critical thinking skills test based on indicators from Facione (2013). Data were analysed using normality test, homogeneity test, and F test (ANOVA) with 5% significance level. Findings: The results showed that there was a significant effect of 0.000, meaning that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group simultaneously on students' critical thinking skills after the application of the STEM-based PjBL model assisted by mind mapping. Students in the experimental class showed an increase in the ability to interpret, analyse, evaluate, and draw conclusions from the Cardiovascular system material. Contribution: These findings suggest that the integration of project-based learning with STEM approach and visualisation through mind mapping is effective in improving students' higher order thinking skills in a meaningful way.

Abstract

Background: Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) as probiotics provide many benefits to the body, including suppressing the growth of pathogens in the digestive tract. Antibacterial compounds from LAB can inhibit the presence of pathogenic bacteria. This study aimed to determine the ability of antibacterial compounds from Gatot LAB to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi bacteria. Methodology: LAB was isolated from cassava gatot, and The LAB isolates obtained were then tested for several LAB characteristics and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. typhi. LAB characterization based on colony morphology, Gram staining, biochemical testing, coaggregation, and autoaggregation. Findings: There were 7 LAB isolates obtained, namely isolates with codes GNK1, GNK3, GNR2, GNR4, GUR1, GUR3, and GUR5. Isolate GUR3 can inhibit E. coli with the highest inhibition zone of 21.31 ± 3.98 mm. In the antibacterial test against S. typhi, 4 isolates had an inhibitory activity with the highest inhibition diameter by isolate GNK3 of 28.23±3.91 mm. LAB isolates from gatot have the ability to autoaggregate and coaggregate against E. coli and S. typhi. There are 5 isolates that show inhibitory activity against E. coli, namely GNK1, GNK3, GNR2, GNR4, GUR1, and GUR3. Inhibitory activity against S. typhi is shown by 4 LAB isolates, namely GNK1, GNK3, GNR2, and GNR4. Contribution: This research shows that LAB isolates from gatot have potential as probiotic agents with significant antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. typhi, so it can be developed as a natural alternative to control intestinal pathogens.

Abstract

Background: The vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone) is a marine species of high economic value. Meanwhile, vannamei shrimps are easily attacked by parasites that can cause failure in the cultivation. This study aims to investigate ectoparasites and endoparasites in vannamei shrimp ponds in the Padang Pariaman area in terms of their prevalence and the pond water quality. Methodology: This research was carried out by purposive random sampling method. The parasites identification were conducted at the Animal Taxonomy Laboratory, Biology Department, Universitas Andalas. Findings: Six species of ectoparasites were found, namely Acineta sp., Arcella sp., Epistylis sp., Trichodina sp., Vorticella sp., and Zoothamnium sp. Moreover, only one species of endoparasite was found, namely Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). The prevalence of ectoparasite species was highest in Zoothamnium sp. in 40-day-old shrimp (80 %) and 63.3 % in 30-day-old shrimp. Further, the prevalence of endoparasites was highest in female shrimp (94.5 %), while it was 87.8 % in male shrimp. Furthermore, there were six parameters of shrimp pond water quality that do not meet the cultivation standards, namely pH, DO, BOD, COD, ammonia, and zinc, while the other two parameters meet the standards, namely temperature and salinity. In conclusion, the production of vannamei shrimp can be reduced and parasitic disease outbreaks can result from water quality that does not meet culture standards. Contribution:This study contribute to the shrimp ponds in the area in managing stocking density, feeding levels, and sanitation.

Abstract

Background: Changes in tea consumption trends present opportunities for the tea industry, especially as alternative raw materials have been tested in recent years to develop tea and kombucha with distinct organoleptic and functional properties. This study evaluates the organoleptic characteristics and consumer preferences for Singkil tea and Singkil kombucha. Methodology: A sensory evaluation was conducted with 30 untrained panelists to assess color, aroma, taste, texture, and overall acceptability using a hedonic scale. Additionally, the alcohol content was measured. Findings: The results of the hedonic test indicated that all treatments fell into category 3 "slightly liked", suggesting an acceptable level of consumer preference. On average, both Singkil tea and Singkil kombucha received an acceptance score of 3, indicating that they were "slightly liked." This suggests their potential as alternative beverages suitable for commercialization. Furthermore, the safety of the product was confirmed, as it contains 0% alcohol, meets halal standards. Contribution: This study concludes that Singkil kombucha has the potential to be a viable alternative beverage for the market, and that it is safe for consumption due to its 0% alcohol content, which complies with halal standards

Abstract

Background: Bacteria in nature can have various effects on human life, including the development of diseases. Consequently, it is necessary to regulate or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. One method of doing so is through the use of natural ingredients, such as Matoa (Pometia pinnata). This study aims to provide a literature review on the potential of various Matoa plant extracts as antibacterials. Methodology: The investigation was conducted using the PRISMA approach, which involved the systematic literature review method. Electronic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were searched from 2010 to 2024. "Pometia pinnata" is a search term that encompasses " Pometia pinnata as antibacterial" and "Antibacterial Activity of Pometia pinnata." A qualitative analysis was conducted on 22 articles that satisfied the inclusion criteria following the selection process. Findings: The review results indicated that the extracts of matoa's leaves, seeds, and bark contain active compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and other phenolic compounds, which exhibit antibacterial activity. Despite the large potential, the majority of the research is still exploratory and has not yet progressed to the clinical trial stage. Consequently, additional, more intensive research is required to investigate the mechanism of action, toxicity, and potential clinical applications of herbal medicines derived from indigenous Indonesian plants. Contribution: This review highlights the antibacterial potential of matoa (Pometia pinnata) and underscores the need for further studies on its mechanism, toxicity, and clinical application, thereby guiding future research on Indonesian herbal medicine
