Abstract

Femicide represents the most extreme manifestation of gender-based violence and therefore cannot be understood merely as an ordinary criminal act, but must be situated as a human security concern requiring state attention. This study examines femicide in Indonesia as a non-traditional security threat through the lenses of human security and feminist security studies, focusing on how the state responds through legal frameworks, institutional arrangements, and policy implementation. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach based on a critical review of relevant literature. The findings reveal the absence of explicit legal recognition of femicide within Indonesian law, resulting in a persistent gap between normative commitments and practical enforcement. This gap is reflected in fragmented data collection mechanisms and limited institutional capacity among law enforcement agencies. By reframing femicide as a security issue rather than a conventional criminal matter, this study contributes to existing scholarship by extending Indonesian femicide debates into the field of security studies and highlighting the urgency of a more integrated state response in legal enforcement and institutional strengthening.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) subjects in enhancing teachers’ spiritual role-modeling at Rahmat Islamiyah Elementary School, Medan. The research employed a qualitative approach using field study methods, including observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the systematic management of Islamic Religious Education (PAI), encompassing planning, implementation, and evaluation, plays a pivotal role in shaping teachers’ attitudes and behaviors as spiritual role models for students. Teachers function not merely as transmitters of knowledge but as exemplars of moral and spiritual integrity in their daily school interactions. Furthermore, the study reveals that teachers who consistently apply holistic management practices demonstrate strong spiritual discipline both within and beyond the classroom. Strengthening the management of Islamic Religious Education therefore enhances teachers’ capacity for spiritual exemplarity and contributes significantly to the development of students’ religious character.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between teacher competence—covering pedagogical, professional, social, and personal dimensions—and the use of deep learning conceptualized as a deep approach to learning that fosters critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Situated within the broader discourse on 21st-century education, this research addresses the limited empirical evidence explaining how multidimensional teacher competence predicts the implementation of deep pedagogical approaches. The study involved 25 teachers, encompassing eight variables and 32 indicators. The analytical procedure employed Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 4, conducted through outer and inner model evaluations, including convergent validity, discriminant validity, construct reliability, and bootstrapping-based hypothesis testing. The findings indicate that not all aspects of teacher competence exert a direct influence on each dimension of soft skills. However, pedagogical, professional, and personal competencies significantly contribute to strengthening critical thinking and creativity among teachers and students. These results underscore the strategic role of teacher professional development in advancing deep pedagogical practices and provide policy-relevant insights for strengthening teacher competence frameworks in contemporary education systems.

Abstract

This study conducts a systematic literature review of seven selected scholarly articles and policy-related documents examining the social rehabilitation of Children in Conflict with the Law (ABH) at UPT PRSMP Surabaya. Framed within the discourse of child rights protection in institutional settings, the study explores the extent to which ABH’s fundamental rights have been substantively fulfilled. These rights include access to education, health services, religious practice, recreation, and legal protection. Using Santrock’s theory of adolescent development as an analytical lens, the review evaluates whether rehabilitation practices align with adolescents’ developmental needs. The findings indicate that rights fulfillment has been pursued through educational programs, spiritual guidance, vocational training, recreational activities, and legal assistance. Nevertheless, the synthesis identifies persistent structural challenges, notably inadequate physical facilities, incomplete legal-administrative processes, and weak inter-agency coordination. By integrating a developmental perspective into the evaluation of social rehabilitation, this study contributes to the literature by demonstrating that effective rights fulfillment extends beyond regulatory compliance to include institutional coherence and developmental sensitivity. The study concludes that while initial efforts toward fulfilling ABH rights are evident, strengthening infrastructure and improving institutional coordination are critical to enhancing the effectiveness and developmental relevance of rehabilitation programs.

Abstract

This study examines the body gestures of students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara in virtual classrooms, lecturers’ responses to these gestures, and the meanings implied in students’ nonverbal behavior from a theoretical perspective. The research addresses how nonverbal communication shapes engagement in post-pandemic online learning environments. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation of student interactions via the Zoom platform and analyzed using George Kelly’s gesture theory and Vijai Kumar’s gesture theory. The findings indicate that students’ gestures are predominantly adaptive (adaptors) rather than illustrative or regulatory, reflecting intrapersonal psychological states such as confusion, boredom, hesitation, or cognitive processing. These gestures often create ambiguity due to limited verbal clarification. The study argues that Kumar’s framework is more applicable for assessing real-time student engagement, while Kelly’s theory provides deeper insight into students’ cognitive construction of learning experiences. The results highlight that weak nonverbal interaction contributes to reduced effectiveness of online learning, suggesting the need for lecturers to incorporate awareness of gesture theory and nonverbal communication strategies to foster meaningful virtual classroom engagement.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Instagram as a digital promotional medium in increasing the interest and number of new student applicants at Vocational High School Tritech Informatika, Medan. The study addresses the growing competition among secondary education institutions and investigates how social media–based educational promotion influences school visibility and enrollment decisions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observations of Instagram promotional content, in-depth interviews with key informants—including the school principal, public relations staff, educators, parents of graduating students, and surrounding community members—and documentation of digital promotional materials and student admission records. Data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in promotional strategies and their perceived impacts. The findings indicate that Instagram-based promotion plays a significant role in enhancing public awareness of the school, strengthening its institutional image, and stimulating prospective students’ interest through visually engaging, informative, and consistently managed content. This study contributes to the literature on educational communication by demonstrating the effectiveness of digital school marketing strategies in student recruitment and offers practical insights for vocational schools seeking to optimize social media platforms for sustainable enrollment growth.

Abstract

This study examines Restorasi Indonesia as a political vision articulated through the political communication strategy of Surya Paloh in the digital era, in response to the increasing mediatization of political discourse within Indonesia’s contemporary democratic landscape. The research addresses how the vision of national restoration is constructed, disseminated, and transformed through digital political communication practices to influence public perception and political engagement. Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilizes discourse analysis to investigate Surya Paloh’s communication strategies across digital platforms, including speeches, social media narratives, and mediated political messaging. The findings indicate that the articulation of Restorasi Indonesia operates not merely as an ideological construct but as a communicative framework that adapts to the dynamics of digital media through symbolic narratives, strategic framing, and audience-oriented messaging. This transformation reflects a shift from conventional political mobilization toward digitally mediated persuasion, enabling the political vision to maintain relevance in a rapidly evolving information ecosystem. The study argues that the effectiveness of Restorasi Indonesia as a political vision is closely linked to its communicative adaptability, where strategic digital engagement becomes central to shaping political legitimacy and sustaining ideological resonance in the public sphere.

Abstract

Mosques have long played a strategic role in shaping Muslim character through Islamic Religious Education (IRE). In many rural contexts, however, including Sukadono Village, Deli Serdang Regency, the educational function of mosques has gradually declined and become less responsive to community needs. This study addresses this gap by examining the current condition of mosque-based IRE in Sukadono, identifying the structural and socio-cultural constraints that hinder its implementation, and formulating revitalization strategies grounded in local needs and community participation. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that limitations in human resources, program sustainability, and community engagement significantly affect the effectiveness of mosque-based education. This study argues that participatory, context-sensitive revitalization strategies can restore the mosque’s educational role and strengthen its relevance in rural settings. The novelty of this research lies in its participatory focus on rural mosques, offering a sustainable model for community-based Islamic education development.

Abstract

Indonesia is widely recognized as a multicultural society in which religious and cultural diversity shapes everyday social relations. Medan City, a major urban center in North Sumatra, provides a concrete context for examining how diversity is nurtured and maintained through local cultural practices. This article analyzes the construction of relations between religion and local culture in Medan, focusing on how these relations contribute to social harmony in a plural urban setting. The study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method based on literature review, policy documents, and relevant previous studies. The findings indicate that religious diversity—encompassing Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism—intersects with ethnic plurality in daily social practices such as communal celebrations, traditional rituals, and economic cooperation. These interactions demonstrate that local culture functions as a practical mechanism for fostering tolerance, mutual respect, national commitment, and non-violence. Despite ongoing challenges related to identity politics and disputes over houses of worship, the article argues that local cultural practices play a mediating role in sustaining interreligious harmony. This study contributes to urban pluralism scholarship by emphasizing diversity as a lived and negotiated process rooted in local cultural dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the talaqi method in Qur’an memorization integrated with the One Day One Ayat approach at Al-Farabi Integrated Junior High School, Deli Serdang, in response to the need for effective, developmentally appropriate tahfizh strategies at the secondary level. The study addresses how the combined approach is implemented, the outcomes it produces, and the challenges encountered in practice. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and administrators, and analysis of program documentation. The findings indicate that the tahfizh program is systematically organized through grade-based memorization targets, daily talaqi sessions complemented by muraja’ah, and periodic evaluations. This implementation contributes to improved accuracy of recitation, stronger memorization (mutqin), and increased student discipline, supported by teacher commitment, a conducive Islamic school culture, standardized mushaf, and parental involvement. Nevertheless, limitations in instructional time, variations in students’ memorization abilities, and uneven family support remain significant challenges. The study argues that integrating talaqi with the One Day One Ayat approach offers a pedagogically sound and sustainable model for Qur’an memorization in Islamic secondary education.
