Abstract

The post-truth era is marked by the prevalence of inaccurate information and the rapid spread of disinformation through digital media. This research explores the relationship between communication ethics and policy regulations as tools to address these challenges, focusing on regulations implemented to tackle disinformation. One example of the regulations analyzed is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union and Digital Media Regulations in Indonesia, which aim to limit the spread of false information while maintaining freedom of speech. The study also assesses the impact on individual privacy and freedom of expression. Furthermore, the role of stakeholders, including journalists, social media platforms, and users, in disseminating accurate and trustworthy information is analyzed. Using a qualitative approach, this study identifies the challenges in implementing these regulations and offers effective mitigation strategies. The findings suggest that collaboration between ethics, regulation, and digital literacy is key to building a healthier information ecosystem in the post-truth era. The practical implication of this research is that policymakers can design better regulations by considering digital media education, while social media platforms can implement policies that are more responsive to disinformation. It is hoped that the results of this research will provide valuable insights for policymakers, academics, and practitioners in designing more effective solutions to address disinformation.

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology has significantly influenced societal lifestyles, including in the economic sector. This study examines the adaptation and transformation of traditional markets in response to digitalization, with a particular focus on Aur Kuning Market in Bukittinggi, a major economic hub in the region. The research employs a historical method, utilizing both primary and secondary sources, including oral and written data. The findings reveal that traders in Aur Kuning Market are gradually adopting digital tools, albeit primarily for communication rather than full-fledged e-commerce. Despite the growing digital presence, traders strive to maintain the traditional characteristics of the market. The study highlights the coexistence of conventional market practices with modern digital tools and underscores the challenges and opportunities associated with this transition.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the phenomenon of marginalization and the survival mechanism of the community in the middle of the urban tourism environment and its impact on social disorganization, limited access to basic rights, and a decrease in the quality of life of the community. The case study was conducted on the community in the Kenjeran Park tourism area in Surabaya. The marginalization experienced by the Kenjeran Park tourism community faces various problems, such as weak social control, environmental degradation, and loss of support for the development of local economic sustainability. This is because this tourist attraction, which was once crowded, is now facing the challenge of a lack of tourists, weak tourism attraction, and many tourism facilities that are stalled and not maintained. On the other hand, this environment is still inhabited and becomes the economic activity of the community, both fishermen, residents and street vendors who sell every day. This study was conducted using qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach. The results showed that the community experienced social disorganization characterized by poor social, cultural, and economic environment, weak social control, vulnerability to lawless activities, and a subsistence lifestyle. Marginalization in this case occurs due to the stagnation of tourism development and the lack of socio-economic structure support to build the quality of life of the community in the Kenjeran Park tourism area. This research is expected to contribute to identifying tourism development challenges and public policy recommendations to overcome community marginalization in urban tourism areas.

Abstract

Natural resource extraction often causes environmental and social harm. Virtue Dragon Nickel Inc. (VDNI Inc.), a nickel processing company, is legally required to implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) under Law No. 40 of 2007 on Limited Liability Companies. This study examines VDNI Inc.’s CSR implementation in Morosi and Puuruy villages, Morosi District, Konawe Regency, using a qualitative approach with Elkington’s Triple Bottom Line and Beck’s Risk Society Theory. Findings show CSR efforts focus on environmental and social responsibilities. Environmentally, VDNI Inc. employs Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS), and sparing technology, but only ESP and sparing are in use. Poor dust management has led to black dust pollution, increasing acute respiratory infections. Socially, CSR prioritizes infrastructure, including water distribution, road and bridge repairs, and school renovations, yet lacks community empowerment and public health programs. Water supply remains unequal—Morosi Village receives clean water, while Puuruy Village relies on murky water, causing skin diseases. Overall, VDNI Inc.’s CSR efforts remain insufficient in ensuring environmental sustainability and equitable social welfare.

Abstract

The digital era has transformed communication from a mere medium for exchanging information into an integral part of an algorithm-driven economic mechanism. Algorithms play a crucial role in managing the flow of information on digital platforms, making them strategic tools in digital capitalism. This study explores Al-Khwarizmi’s thoughts on algorithms and their relevance to the commodification of communication in the digital age. Using a qualitative approach based on literature review, this research analyzes how algorithms, initially developed for numerical systems, have evolved into instruments that regulate information dissemination in digital media. The findings reveal that algorithms function not only as filtering mechanisms but also as economic tools that direct content exposure based on the business interests of digital platforms. This study highlights the impact of algorithmic communication on information access, user privacy, and informational bias due to excessive personalization. Al-Khwarizmi’s perspective provides a valuable historical lens for understanding the shifting role of algorithms from mere computational systems to instruments of information control in the digital economy.

Abstract

The concept and movement of Interreligious Qurban, initiated by Tuan Guru Batak, a murshid of the Naqshbandiyah Khalidiyah order in Simalungun, North Sumatra, represent a social innovation aimed at fostering interreligious harmony. This movement is realized through the Qurban ritual during Eid al-Adha, involving various community elements, including religious leaders, Muslim and non-Muslim communities, and local government officials. The distribution of qurban meat is carried out indiscriminately, regardless of religious background, reflecting a strong spirit of solidarity and tolerance within the multicultural society, particularly in Nagori Jawa Tongah. This study aims to analyze the thoughts and implementation of the Interreligious Qurban Movement and its impact on social harmony. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research collected data through in-depth interviews and document analysis from various local and national media sources. The findings reveal that this movement not only strengthens social relations but also serves as a model for religious diversity in Simalungun. The success of this initiative is evident in the establishment of the Interreligious Qurban Activity Center at the Sufi House and Civilization of Pondok Pesulukan Serambi Babussalam. These findings suggest that the qurban ritual can function not only as a religious obligation but also as a social instrument for fostering tolerance and social cohesion in a pluralistic society.
