The dominance of WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) countries in global psychology research limits the diversity of perspectives. This affects the indexing and global exposure of psychology research from countries outside these categories, one of which is Indonesia. ANIMA Indonesian Psychological Journal, as one of the Indonesian psychology journals committed to international standards, has taken a number of steps to increase global access to Indonesian psychology, with the ultimate goal of realizing a more inclusive psychology. These steps are explained in more detail in this editorial article.

The long-term psychological impact of a traumatic natural disaster, such as the 2004 Aceh Tsunami, is still poorly documented in the scientific literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the mental health status of survivors of the 2004 Aceh Tsunami 20 years after the Aceh Tsunami, utilizing a descriptive quantitative research design. The study participants were 197 tsunami survivors selected by purposive sampling, with specific criteria: (1) being victims directly exposed to the 2004 Aceh Tsunami; and (2) being members of the Aceh community. The Mental Health Inventory-18 (MHI-18; α = .93) was utilized as the data collection instrument for mental health in this study. The results of the data analysis showed that the majority of survivors (78.17%) had low mental health or psychological well-being, reflecting ongoing psychological disorders even though 20 years had passed since the disaster. The findings of this study indicate that the psychological impact of the Aceh Tsunami continues in the long term, significantly affecting psychological well-being. The results of this study emphasize the need for special attention to the mental health of disaster survivors, as well as the importance of long-term support programs to mitigate the long-term psychological impacts post-disasters.

Generation Z, which currently dominates the workforce, has high expectations for work-life balance, material rewards, and supportive physical work environment (PWE). This study explores the influence of transformational leadership (TL), caring ethical climate (CEC), and physical work environment (PWE) on turnover intention (TI) among 317 Generation Z workers across various sectors in Indonesia. Study findings reveal that transformational leadership (TL) directly reduces turnover intention (TI; β = - .70; p < .05), though the mediating effect through caring ethical climate (CEC) is not significant; only evident under low physical work environment (PWE) conditions. Results also show that physical work environment (PWE) plays a significant moderating role (β = - .63; p < .05), strengthening the positive impact of caring ethical climate (CEC) in reducing turnover intention (TI). In other words, a conducive physical work environment (PWE) not only enhances comfort, but also supports the creation of an ethical culture that more effectively lowers turnover intention (TI). This highlights that physical factors in the workplace have a substantial impact, both directly and indirectly, on employee retention. This study underscores the importance of transformational leadership (TL) and the management of physical work environment (PWE) in enhancing the loyalty of Generation Z workers, with results providing strategic insights to improve retention through a holistic approach.

Academic self-sabotaging behavior is a prevalent problem among Form Two students in Kenya, being linked to lower academic achievement, academic anxiety, academic stress, and poor mental health. Existing research has consistently linked basic psychological needs (BPN) satisfaction to less academic self-sabotaging behavior. Despite this, there is a relative dearth of studies exploring this area in the Kenyan context. Therefore, the current study examined how basic psychological needs-supportive learning environment relate to academic self-sabotaging behavior, with self-determination theory (SDT) as the theoretical basis, and a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design. The quantitative study sample comprised 400 students (215 boys; 185 girls) drawn using proportionate stratified and simple random sampling. The qualitative study sample included 20 students drawn using purposive criterion sampling. Data for quantitative study was collected using Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS; Chen et al., 2015) and Academic Self-Handicapping Scale (Midgley & Urdan, 2001). Qualitative data collection tools was a semi-structured interview schedule. Study results revealed a weak, negative and statistically significant correlation between needs-supportive learning environment and academic self-sabotaging behavior (r(396) = - .14; p < .01). Qualitative findings complemented these results, revealing that a learning environment that supported students’ needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness promoted high level of adaptive learning behaviors. The study recommends that schools should promote an autonomy-supportive school environment that meets students’ basic psychological needs (BPN) to reduce academic self-sabotaging behavior.

Adolescent depression is a major public health issue, yet there is limited study on depressive symptoms among Indonesian adolescents. Identifying distinct subgroups within this population could help inform targeted prevention and intervention efforts. This study analyzed data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey 5 (IFLS-5) utilizing Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify depressive symptom subgroups. Chi-Square Tests were utilized for univariate analysis, and Logistic Regression Analysis examined associated factors. Among 2,267 adolescents, two symptom profiles emerged: (1) “Low-Level” Depressive Symptoms Profile (73.31%); and (2) “High-Level” Depressive Symptoms Profile (26.69%). Sex or gender was the only significant factor in the univariate analysis, with Logistic Regression Analysis revealing that female adolescents were more likely to exhibit high levels of depressive symptoms. These findings suggest that female adolescents are at greater risk for more severe depressive symptoms, highlighting the need for targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

This study critically re-examines the academic struggles of Indonesian postgraduate students in the United Kingdom (UK), drawing on empirical data from a prior qualitative study. The study employs a dual theoretical lens from Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory of Human Agency, grounded in a critical realist ontology, to explore the underlying structural forces of how academic practices contribute to student's educational experiences. Three interrelated themes are developed: (1) silence and pedagogical disempowerment; (2) destabilization of self-efficacy within unfamiliar academic conventions; and (3) the tension between agentic aspiration and marginalization. The findings challenge neoliberal assumptions of meritocracy and call for more awareness, reflexive, and humanizing approaches to international education that treat students not as culturally deficient or individually lacking but as subjects shaped by and capable of transformation within and against inherited educational systems.

Savahl et al. (2021) propose a quadripartite model for children's subjective well-being (SWB) that includes both: global (context-free items assessing overall well-being) and specific (domain-based items evaluating particular life aspects) cognitive components, as well as positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA). The goal of this study is to test this model of SWB among Indonesian children using data from the third wave of the Children’s Worlds Survey. A representative sample of West Java children aged 10 and 12 years (N = 9,526). Data analysis involved confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results for a model with a second-order latent variable using the pooled sample displayed good fit indexes. The second-order analysis showed significant standardized regression weights of the SWB items of each latent variable, and of the first order latent variables on the second order latent variable as expected The high internal consistency of the CW-SWBS5, CW-DBSWBS, and CW-PNAS indicates that the quadripartite model of SWB is psychometrically robust among Indonesian children aged 10 and 12. However, the notably low factor loadings for items related to “satisfaction with the people children live with”—particularly when compared to higher-loading items such as “satisfaction with safety”—suggest a potential cultural divergence in how certain SWB domains are interpreted. Multigroup CFA showed that all statistics can be meaningfully compared between boys and girls and between 10 and 12-year-olds age groups. The findings of this study confirm this model can be used with Indonesian children and results offer valuable insights for parents, teachers, and policymakers aiming to develop evidence-based interventions that support child well-being across cognitive and emotional domains.

The renewed memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Himpunan Psikologi Indonesia (HIMPSI; Indonesian Psychological Association) and the American Psychological Association (APA), originally signed in 2020 and updated in 2025, marks a significant opportunity for Indonesian psychology to expand its contribution on the global stage. This editorial highlights the underrepresentation of Indonesian-language psychological assessments in the APA PsycTests® database and identifies structural barriers, such as the absence of a standardized national documentation system. By showcasing the vast potential of locally developed and adapted psychological tools, this article proposes concrete strategies to foster active participation from Indonesia and other underrepresented communities in developing evidence-based and contextually relevant psychological science. Proposed strategies include empowering individual researchers to submit locally developed or adapted instruments, encouraging institutions and journals to adopt systematic documentation and reporting standards, and establishing a national task force led by professional associations and consortia to coordinate the registration and certification of psychological tests for inclusion in APA PsycTests®. This editorial serves as an open invitation to join a global dialogue in which psychological science is enriched by diverse voices, cultural contexts, and lived experiences from across the world.

This study aims to obtain data of psychopathology proportion of mothers who have children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and psychopathology features of mothers who have ADHD child. Subjects (mothers who have ADHD child and living together and function as primary caretakers) were randomly drawn proportionally from 30 elementary schools (from grade one to six) in DKI Jakarta from December 2010 until April 2011. Data were collected through MINI KID, Symptom Check List (SCL)-90, and subject demographic questionnaire. Results reveal that 60,4% of mothers with ADHD child have psychopathological symptoms with somatization (56,7%) as the most common symptom. The more a mother has psychopathological symptoms the worst is her perception towards her child. Through betterment of the mothers' psychopathology, her perception towards her child would be better, so that she could be more involved in the management/caring of her child. So a routine screening of mothers with ADHD child is most suggested.
