Abstract

Remaja obesitas kerap menjadi korban bully.

Abstract

The Indonesian research team participating in the Children’s Worlds international project has used a new context-free multi-item scale named CW-SWBS (Children’s Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale). This psychometric instrument was previously never used in Indonesia. This study aimed to validate the adapted Indonesia language version for a representative sample of children who are elementary students in West Java province (N = 22,616), ranging from 8, 10, to 12-year-olds. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to test the fit of the psychometric scale, and multi-group CFA was used to check the comparability between answers given by gender and school types. Result findings showed that the instrument displays excellent fit for measuring life satisfaction in Indonesian children using five items, instead of the six original items. Answers to the items of the CW-SWBS by gender and school types were demonstrated to be comparable, suggesting that there was no different answering style between individuals in these studied groups.

Abstract

This study aimed to explain the contribution of parenting styles on children’s perception of being adequately heard by parents and their subjective well-being across three bullying groups (perpetrators, victims, and uninvolved). Participants (N = 1,294; 54.8% girls; 45.2% boys) were elementary school (47.3%) and junior high school students (52.7%) in Bandung City. Parenting styles were measured using Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran for Children. Subjective well-being was measured using the Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale. Being adequately heard by parents was measured using the Children's Worlds measure. Data were analysed using linear regression and descriptive analysis. Parenting styles contributed significantly to children’s perception of being heard by parents and their subjective well-being. Parenting styles contributed differently across the three groups and genders. The uninvolved perceived that their parents were warm. The perpetrators perceived their parents as rejective. The victims perceived their parents as overprotective. The perpetrators displayed the lowest SWB score, while the uninvolved displayed the highest SWB score. Warm mothers showed a significant positive effect on children’s SWB and perception that they were adequately heard. Overprotective fathers showed a significant positive effect on children’s SWB because father was perceived as the family's head who protects their children. It is suggested that parents should practice warm rearing to prevent children’s involvement in bullying

Abstract

This study aims to explain the subjective well-being of Indonesian children in terms of material well-being. Indonesia is still considered a developing country, and several studies reveal the correlation between economic status and subjective well-being of adults. However, only a very limited number of studies focus on Indonesian children’s material well-being from their own perspective. This study used data from the third wave of the Children’s Worlds survey conducted in Indonesia. The sample (N = 14,576; 49.35% boys; 50.65% girls) was composed of children aged 10 years and 12 years. Subjective well-being (SWB) was measured using the Children’s Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale (CW-SWBS) and a single-item Overall Life Satisfaction (OLS) scale. Material well-being was measured using family economic status, material deprivation, frequency of being worried about family’s money situation, and frequency of having enough food to eat each day. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Cummins’ theory of subjective well-being (SWB) was used to explain the results. Results showed that children from families with high economic status who reported no material deprivation, never worrying about the family’s money, and always having enough food to eat each day displayed higher subjective well-being (SWB) mean scores on both subjective well-being (SWB) scales compared to children in families from middle and lower economic status. However, children from middle and lower economic status showed rather high subjective well-being (SWB) scores, suggesting that children are able to maintain positive feelings about themselves and their level of subjective well-being (SWB) despite belonging to a less fortunate economic situation. These results will hopefully encourage Indonesian scholars and researchers to elaborate deeper in future studies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how parental child-rearing styles contribute to subjective well-being of three groups: bullying victims, bullying perpetrator-victims, and those uninvolved in bullying. These groups were categorized based on the children’s self-reported bullying incidents. This study used quantitative approach with cross-sectional design. The participants were 781 4th to 6th-grader students (51.98% boys, 48.02% girls), consists of 329 bullying victims, 197 were both bullying perpetrators and victims, and 255 were uninvolved in bullying. Parental child-rearing styles were measured using The Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran for Children (EMBU-C), while subjective well-being was measured using the Children’s Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale 5 items (CW-SWBS5). Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results revealed that the warmth of fathers and mothers made significant and direct contributions to the subjective well-being of children uninvolved in bullying, where the father’s warmth negatively contributed, while the mother’s warmth positively contributed. Similar results did not appear in the subjective well-being of victims or perpetrator-victims.

Abstract

AbstractThis study describes the adaptation of the Child and Youth Resilience Measure-Revised (CYRM-R) for use in Indonesia. The process of adaptation involved several steps. The first step was translating and back-translating the measurement. The next step was conducting focus groups to explore the legibility of the translated measure. After this, the validity and the reliability of the translated version was tested, as well as an exploration of data. Samples were130 elementary school children (57.7% female) aged 10-13. Data were collected in 2 randomly chosen elementary schools in Kota Bandung. The analyses confirmed the validity and reliability of the measure (alpha = .902). The results indicated that the CYRM-R had been adapted successfully and is a robust measure for exploring the social-ecological resilience of children and youth in Indonesia. The CYRM-R can be used for research and practice in the Indonesian context. Keywords: resilience; child; measurement; cross-cultural; CYRM-R; Indonesia

Abstract

Abstract. This Study has purpose to compare the material well being of orphanage children in Bandung before and during COVID-19 pandemic. The participan in this study were children and adolescent aged 10-18 years old (N=89,64% girls; 36% boys). Data collection was using cluster random sampling technique. The measuring instruments used were CW-SWBS (Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale) and CW-MWBS (Children's Worlds Material Well-Being Scale). Data analysis was performed using paired t test, descriptive statistics using crosstabs and frequencies. Aspects that were seen from material welfare were material deprivation, family economic status, and subjective material well being on the frequency of worrying about the amount of money and food availability. The COVID-19 pandemic had made a decline of all sectors. This situation could certainly affect the material welfare of the orphanage children. The results of this study explain that before the COVID-19 pandemic there were 85.4% of children and adolescents in orphanages who experienced material deprivation. Meanwhile, during the pandemic, the number of children who reported experiencing material deprivation was lower, namely 69.7% of children and adolescents in orphanages. With these results, it shows that during the COVID-19 pandemic there was a decrease in children's appreciation of material deprivation of Orphanage's children in Bandung city. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah Children’s Worlds yaitu CW-SWBS (Children's Worlds Subjective Well-Being Scale) Children’s world dan CW-MWBS (Children's Worlds Material Well-Being Scale) Children’s world. Pandemi COVID-19 menjadikan semua sektor mengalami penurunan termasuk sektor Panti Asuhan.
