Abstract

The widespread adoption of online learning has significantly transformed the dynamics of cooperative learning. One of the main challenges in distance cooperative learning is determining whether Online Cooperative Learning (OCL) can successfully elicit the fundamental elements of cooperative learning and, in turn, improve student learning outcomes. This study aims to examine whether the five essential elements of cooperative learning-positive interdependence, individual accountability, social skills, group processing, and face-to-face interaction-can emerge in a virtual environment and contribute to improving nursing students' proficiency in ESP (English for Specific Purposes) vocabulary. Using a quasi-experimental one-group design, this quantitative research involved 30 nursing students from a university in West Java, Indonesia, selected through convenience sampling. Paired t-test analysis was conducted to assess the impact of OCL. The comparison of pre-test and post-test values indicated that the five cooperative elements were effectively elicited, leading to enhanced student proficiency. The t-test yielded a t-value of 4.781, which surpassed the critical t-table value of 1.697, confirming a statistically significant improvement. These findings suggest that the OCL model successfully fosters the fundamental elements of cooperative learning and enhances nursing students’ ESP vocabulary proficiency. Consequently, this model presents a promising approach for improving ESP vocabulary skills in nursing education.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of English language proficiency and difficulties among trainees at the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Technical and Vocational Training Institute (TVTI). With English proficiency being increasingly vital for global career success, particularly in technical fields such as textile and apparel fashion, it is crucial to explore the language needs and challenges in the under-researched Ethiopian TVET context. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from 128 trainees through questionnaires, observations, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 24, and qualitative data were analyzed using MAXQDA 24. The results showed that trainees perceived writing and speaking as the most difficult macro-skill. Within writing, tasks like reports and proposals were especially challenging due to issues with organization, structure, and grammar usage. For speaking sub-skills, presentations and describing diagrams became difficult for trainees as these were related to clarity and vocabulary. Comprehension of spoken content in class and taking notes were considered challenging due to rapid speech and accents that were not familiar. When it comes to reading sub-skills, understanding complex and specialized vocabulary was most difficult with technical reports and manuals. Trainees also expressed difficulties in understanding models and instructions. Generally, the results indicate inadequacies in skills needed for future studies and careers. Incorporating language instruction combined with real-world practice in all areas could improve trainees' skills to meet the language requirements of their technical fields.

Abstract

The study addresses a critical gap in understanding how politeness strategies are navigated within the hierarchical and culturally nuanced academic interactions of Indonesian higher education. By focusing on lecturer-student dynamics at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, the research explores the types and functions of politeness strategies, providing insights into how cultural and social hierarchies shape communication behaviors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, seven lecturers and their students were observed across multiple classroom sessions. Data collection involved video recordings and field notes, analyzed through Discourse Analysis (DA). The findings reveal that lecturers predominantly employ positive politeness strategies, such as humor, informal greetings, and in-group markers, fostering a collaborative and approachable atmosphere. Conversely, students exhibit negative politeness strategies, like formal address terms and hedging, reflecting respect for authority and a preference for maintaining hierarchical boundaries. These contrasting strategies underscore a complex interplay of reducing and respecting social distance, influenced by high-context cultural norms. The implications extend beyond academia, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive communication practices in hierarchical institutions to foster inclusivity and mutual understanding. By bridging theoretical frameworks with real-world classroom dynamics, this study enriches the discourse on politeness and its critical role in educational settings, particularly in Eastern Indonesia contexts where power and cultural norms intersect profoundly.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of persuasive communication in shaping customer behavior within retail environments, focusing on in-store interactions between customers and retail employees. Using a qualitative approach, we employed discourse analysis to examine the verbal and non-verbal communication strategies that influence customer decision-making and purchasing behavior. Data were collected from several retail locations across Indonesia, involving in-depth observations and recordings of employee-customer exchanges. The study highlights key persuasive techniques, including the use of urgency, social proof, and personalized recommendations, all of which were found to significantly affect customer engagement, perceived value, and purchase intent. Specifically, the findings reveal that communication strategies that align with customer interests and build a sense of urgency were most effective in encouraging immediate purchases. Moreover, the study identifies contextual factors, such as cultural nuances and the role of trust in the Indonesian retail context, that mediate the effectiveness of these persuasive techniques. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of how persuasion operates in retail settings, particularly in non-Western cultures. The research also has practical implications, suggesting that retail managers can enhance customer engagement and boost sales by training employees in specific communication strategies that foster trust and urgency. This study provides valuable insights into how persuasive communication can be optimized to influence consumer behavior and improve retail outcomes.

Abstract

Code-switching, the alternation between two or more languages, is a prevalent yet underexplored phenomenon in multilingual EFL classrooms in Indonesia. This study investigates the functional roles of code-switching employed by English teachers at SMAN 1 Rambah, emphasizing its pedagogical and managerial contributions. Addressing gaps in prior research, which primarily focus on English and Bahasa Indonesia, this study uniquely incorporates the role of local languages such as Mandailing and Malay. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, video recordings, and semi-structured interviews with two experienced English teachers. The analysis revealed five key functions of code-switching: explaining complex concepts, translating vocabulary, repeating for reinforcement, checking comprehension, and managing classroom interactions. These functions significantly enhance students' understanding, engagement, and overall learning experiences. However, excessive reliance on code-switching may impede immersive English language practice, presenting a pedagogical challenge. The findings underscore the importance of balancing code-switching with English immersion to optimize learning outcomes. This study extends the theoretical discourse on multilingual pedagogy by highlighting the strategic integration of local languages into EFL teaching. Implications include fostering a more inclusive and culturally responsive language education framework, which accommodates linguistic diversity while promoting English proficiency. These insights contribute to the global discourse on multilingual education, particularly in settings where linguistic and cultural diversity intersects with educational objectives.

Abstract

This study explores a crucial gap in the pragmatics of public communication by examining speech acts and politeness strategies in Indonesian train announcements. Using a qualitative descriptive approach rooted in pragmatics, data were collected through recordings and note-taking of both manual and automated announcements from long-distance (KAJJ) and commuter (KRL) trains. The analysis followed a four-stage framework: domain analysis identified operational contexts, taxonomic analysis categorized speech acts and politeness strategies, componential analysis examined patterns and variations, and cultural theme analysis connected linguistic features to broader cultural norms. Key findings revealed that KAJJ announcements prioritize directive speech acts framed by negative politeness and bald-on-record strategies to ensure clarity and passenger compliance. Conversely, KRL announcements blend assertive, expressive, and directive acts supported by positive politeness to foster inclusivity and encourage cooperation. Both services employ boosters to emphasize urgency, while the absence of hedges ensures directness. These findings underline how operational priorities shape linguistic choices, aligning communication strategies with passenger needs and cultural expectations. The study not only advances methodological rigor in analyzing public announcements but also provides practical recommendations for designing effective, culturally sensitive communication systems. These insights contribute to enhancing public transportation services and have broader implications for improving communication frameworks in high-stakes contexts worldwide.

Abstract

The introduction of the Merdeka Curriculum marks a transformative shift in Indonesia’s English Language Teaching (ELT) landscape by promoting flexibility, student-centered learning, and project-based approaches. However, the success of such curriculum reform relies heavily on how teachers, as frontline implementers, perceive, adapt, and navigate its complexities in diverse classroom realities. Addressing a critical gap in existing research that predominantly focuses on policy-level analysis, this qualitative case study investigates the lived experiences, perceptions, and coping strategies of Indonesian ELT educators amidst the early stages of Merdeka Curriculum implementation. Drawing on Fullan’s theory of educational change, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving 20 English teachers, 30 students, and 10 administrators across rural, suburban, and urban settings. Thematic analysis revealed that while the curriculum fosters innovation and autonomy, teachers face significant constraints including insufficient training, technological inequity, and excessive administrative demands. Despite these challenges, educators expressed strong support for student-centered instruction, multimedia integration, and skill development emphasizing communication and critical thinking. This study contributes uniquely by offering context-specific insights into teacher agency within systemic constraints, advocating for equitable resource allocation, professional development, and collaborative policy feedback mechanisms. By amplifying teacher voices, this research not only informs national curriculum design but also engages in broader global conversations on curriculum autonomy, pedagogical reform, and the essential role of teachers in enacting meaningful educational transformation.

Abstract

The increasing popularity of Arabic songs across Indonesian digital platforms has led to frequent misinterpretations, particularly when secular compositions are assumed to be religious expressions such as shalawat. This study responds to that cultural misconception by examining the lyrics of “Qoddukal Mayyās” by Mulla Uthman Al-Musili, a song often mistakenly regarded as devotional. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach based on library research, the analysis is framed through Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory. The methodology involves a systematic progression through heuristic reading to identify literal meanings, hermeneutic reading to interpret symbolic and contextual layers, and the identification of matrices, models, and variants to uncover the internal structure of poetic meaning. The analysis reveals that the song articulates a deeply emotional and profane form of love, marked by symbolic imagery and figurative language. Expressions such as “your supple body,” “O my moon,” and “my heart is on fire” reflect themes of sensual longing and romantic idealization without any reference to spiritual devotion or religious content. These findings confirm that the lyrics align with the Arabic ghazal tradition, emphasizing aesthetic admiration and personal emotion rather than worship or prophetic reverence. The study contributes to the clarification of cultural misreadings in the Indonesian context and highlights the necessity for greater Arabic literary literacy. Its implications are particularly relevant for educational settings where semiotic analysis can help students and the wider public distinguish between artistic expression and religious discourse within the broader landscape of Arabic popular culture.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of the global automotive industry requires vocational graduates who are proficient not only in technical skills but also in English, the lingua franca of technology and professional communication. However, many Indonesian vocational students face persistent challenges in mastering discipline-specific English due to the scarcity of contextualized learning materials. To address this gap, the present study employed a Research and Development (R&D) methodology to systematically design, develop, and validate a tailored English for Specific Purposes (ESP) e-module for automotive engineering students at Banjarmasin State Polytechnic. The R&D process consisted of four stages: needs analysis through curriculum review and student questionnaires, design and development of the e-module integrating authentic automotive contexts and multimedia features, pilot implementation with students, and evaluation through expert validation and learner feedback. Expert assessments confirmed the module’s high validity, with scores of 4.7 for linguistic aspects and 4.4 for technical content, while student evaluations emphasized strong relevance (83.3% agreement), accuracy (84.6% agreement), and usability, though language clarity required refinement to accommodate varied proficiency levels. These findings demonstrate that the developed e-module effectively bridges technical and linguistic competencies, enhances learners’ engagement with authentic materials, and strengthens their communicative readiness for professional practice. The study contributes to ESP pedagogy by offering an empirically validated model for integrating technical content with task-based language learning, and its broader implication lies in advancing vocational education to better align with global industry standards in an increasingly digitalized era.
