Abstract

Ritual communication in the Surtanah tradition, a socio-religious practice performed by communities on the first day after death. This tradition is understood as a manifestation of the acculturation of local culture with Islamic teachings that emphasize prayer, almsgiving, and social solidarity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of ritual communication in Surtanah as a means of transmitting values, strengthening religious identity, and contributing to building global harmony through the values of compassion, tolerance, and togetherness. The research method used is qualitative with an ethnographic communication approach through participant observation and in-depth interviews with religious leaders, traditional practitioners, and the community. The results show that ritual communication in Surtanah functions not only as a means of prayer for the deceased but also as a medium for social integration, a symbol of cultural acculturation, and the strengthening of religious moderation. In conclusion, Surtanah reflects a harmonious dialogue between culture and Islam that is relevant to strengthening universal humanitarian values.

Abstract

This study investigates how Indonesian university students mediate local wisdom and promote tolerance through English-language culinary tutorials on YouTube. Using multimodal discourse analysis and thematic analysis, the research examined five student-produced videos and reflective notes from thirteen participants. The findings reveal that students employed linguistic, visual, and paralinguistic strategies to communicate both procedural clarity and cultural meaning. They integrated religious and moral values, showcased regional diversity, and used English as a medium of intercultural storytelling. Through reflective engagement, learners demonstrated growth in intercultural communicative competence (ICC), including openness, empathy, and moral awareness. The study concludes that digital project-based learning enables students to act as cultural mediators—bridging local heritage with global audiences—while redefining English as an inclusive and ethical communicative tool rooted in Indonesian cultural identity.

Abstract

This study examines the potential of Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) in advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically food security (SDG 2) and climate action (SDG 13). Despite its resilience to drought and carbon sequestration capabilities, market challenges often deter farmers from its cultivation. This research explores a contrasting phenomenon led by a female activist in Lamongan, Indonesia, who successfully developed innovative downstream products from sorghum. Adopting a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study investigates the ecotheological expressions manifested in the activist’s lived experience and resilience. Findings reveal that her persistence is driven by a profound ecotheological ethics manifested in three forms: a spiritual conviction to steward the earth and nourish the community; innovative practices designed to maximize the plant's holistic "blessings"; and communal engagement to propagate these benefits. The study concludes that the internalization of spiritual-ecological values serves as a critical driver for sustainable small-scale agriculture and provides an authentic grassroots model for achieving the SDGs. Furthermore, the results highlight that strategic support from academic, governmental, and research institutions acts as a vital accelerator for such local initiatives.

Abstract

This study explores public reception of the Tepuk Sakinah campaign initiated by Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) as a digital da’wah effort to promote love, family harmony, and religious tolerance through the TikTok platform. Drawing on the phenomenon of local wisdom entering global digital communication, this research employs a qualitative approach using netnography combined with content analysis of user comments. Data were collected from all Tepuk Sakinah videos uploaded by Kemenag’s official account and participating users during the active campaign period, including public comments and engagement metrics. The findings reveal that narratives of love and tolerance were predominantly received positively, indicated by supportive comments, expressions of pride in local culture, and encouragement to share the content. Nevertheless, critical remarks also emerged, questioning the authenticity of digital da’wah practices and highlighting differences in religious interpretation. These results demonstrate that social media functions not only as a channel for disseminating Islamic messages but also as a site of meaning negotiation, where local wisdom can bridge Islamic moderation and global harmony. The study contributes to the development of government communication strategies for utilizing digital platforms to strengthen messages of tolerance within the dynamic online public sphere.
