Abstract

This study aims to examine Larung Sesaji as a pillar of love (mahabbah), tolerance (tasamuh), and Islamic values that can be integrated into efforts to build global harmony. The Larung Sesaji tradition at Lake Ngebel Ponorogo is a form of local wisdom that is rich in philosophical and spiritual meaning. This tradition reflects the values of togetherness, respect for nature, and appreciation for social diversity that coexists in Ponorogo society. Using a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and literature study, this study reveals that Larung Sesaji contains a universal message about the harmony of human relationships with God, fellow human beings, and the environment. These values are in line with Islamic teachings that emphasize compassion, peace, and tolerance. The results of the study show that this local wisdom can be a model for dialogue between cultures and religions, as well as a real contribution to building a global civilization.

Abstract

This study addresses the complex social challenges of the Society 5.0 era, such as inequality and the crisis of trust, by examining the role of local wisdom in maintaining global cohesion. Focusing on the Indonesian context, the research explores the thought of K.H.R. As‘ad Syamsul Arifin in Tarikh Perjuangan Islam Indonesia, specifically his interpretation of the Wali Songo’s culture-based da‘wah strategies. The objective is to identify character traits and social harmony strategies relevant to building an inclusive modern civilization. Utilizing Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, the study analyzes the text within its historical and cultural horizons, supported by data triangulation with literature on Nusantara Sufism and Islamic education. Findings indicate that the Wali Songo integrated spiritual depth—marked by wara‘ and tawadhu‘—with socio-political competence, enabling an adaptive and peaceful expansion of Islam. Their harmony strategies included moral exemplarity, collective deliberation, and the establishment of pesantren as centers for community building. The study concludes that revitalizing these Sufi values and the da‘wah bil-irsyad model serves as a vital bridge between local wisdom and global harmony, offering a sustainable, inclusive framework for navigating the sociocultural tensions of the contemporary era.

Abstract

The Islamic arts learning model holds a strategic position in the education of prospective madrasah teachers as it fosters spirituality, strengthens moral character, and bridges local wisdom with the vision of global education. This study aims to formulate an Islamic arts learning model grounded in an ethnopedagogical approach within the context of the Islamic Elementary Teacher Education Program (PGMI). Using a descriptive qualitative conceptual method, data were obtained through classroom observations, document analysis (lesson plans and teaching notes), and a comprehensive review of national and international literature. The findings indicate that Islamic arts learning in PGMI remains fragmented and tends to emphasize technical skills, with limited integration of Islamic values in the character-building process. The ethnopedagogical approach proves effective in offering contextual, participatory, and socially grounded learning experiences for students. The proposed model comprises four interrelated components: 1) Islamic values as the foundational principle, 2) participatory pedagogical strategies, 3) Islamic artistic expression as a medium for value internalization, and 4) affective–reflective assessment focusing on character formation. This study contributes to the strengthening of Islamic character education in PGMI through a holistic, applicable, and contextually relevant framework for Islamic arts learning in the 21st century.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the implementation of maqāṣid al-sharī’ah within the Topeng Konah tradition of Bondowoso through a case study approach involving participant observation, in-depth interviews with 20 informants, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Topeng Konah serves as a sophisticated form of cultural resistance, utilizing performance symbols that integrate the principle of ḥifẓ al-bī'ah (environmental preservation) as a contemporary expansion of maqāṣid. The five primary characters—Bujang Ganong, Patih Pujangga, Prabu Kelono, Dewi Sekartaji, and Pujangga Anom—collectively reflect the implementation of ḍarūriyāt al-khams (the five essentials) in fostering social harmony within a pluralistic society. Thematic analysis identifies a three-stage value transformation: preservation, adaptation, and transformation, which converts local memories of tolerance into global messages. The study concludes that Topeng Konah is a manifestation of living maqāṣid, successfully creating a dialectic between universal Islamic values and local wisdom. This tradition offers an inclusive model of Islamic practice that remains highly relevant to the multicultural Indonesian context, demonstrating how traditional arts can facilitate the synthesis of religious law and cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study investigates the Mamaca tradition, a prominent oral literary heritage of the Madurese and Pandalungan communities in East Java, characterized by the melodic chanting of ancient didactic texts. The research aims to analyze the socio-ideological role of Mamaca in instilling moral and ethical values, such as filial piety and respect for educators. Employing semiotic and ethnolinguistic approaches, the study explores the structural and symbolic meanings embedded in various genres, including epics and hagiographies of the prophets. Despite its significance as a vehicle for philosophical and religious transmission, the tradition faces potential extinction due to the proliferation of modern entertainment and a critical lack of regeneration among the youth. The findings highlight current revitalization efforts by customary institutions, academics, and the government to reintegrate Mamaca into formal education, specifically within local language curricula, to preserve regional etiquette (tata krama). The study concludes that the integration of Mamaca’s aesthetic and ethical values into the educational sphere is a vital strategy for cultural sustainability. This approach ensures that local wisdom remains a relevant foundation for character building amidst the shifting sociocultural landscape of contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the Bantengan performance in Singosari, Malang, positioned as both a vital cultural heritage and a strategic economic asset for the local community. The research explores how Bantengan serves as a cultural identity marker while functioning as an alternative income source that bolsters the creative economy and community-based tourism. Adopting a qualitative ethnographic economics approach, the study utilizes participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation involving art communities, MSME practitioners, traditional leaders, and local youth. The findings reveal that Bantengan operates through a dual function: primarily as a medium for preserving cultural values, social solidarity, and communal cooperation (gotong royong); and secondarily as an economic driver through the production of costumes, souvenirs, artistic training, and integration into the tourism sector. Despite its potential, the tradition faces significant hurdles, including limited resources and a lack of professional managerial training. The study concludes that Bantengan transcends its role as a symbolic cultural identity for the Singosari people, representing a strategic catalyst for inclusive, participatory, and sustainable local economic development.

Abstract

This research explores the evolution of the coffee-drinking tradition from a private familial practice to a global medium for cross-cultural communication and social facilitation. Positioned as a symbolic bridge for cultural diplomacy, coffee is analyzed not merely as a commodity but as an egalitarian instrument for conflict resolution and trust-building. Adopting a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative approach, the study utilizes participant observation, in-depth interviews with cultural practitioners, and the Miles and Huberman interactive model for data analysis. The findings reveal that coffee serves as a "cultural text" that facilitates persuasive, relational, and problem-solving dialogues across diverse religious and national boundaries. The study offers two significant theoretical contributions: first, the Global Coffee Harmony Theory (GCHT), which frames coffee as a model for informal cultural diplomacy; and second, "Harmony Through Symbolic Communication," which conceptualizes the act of drinking coffee as a preventive and curative tool for fostering global solidarity. Ultimately, the research concludes that coffee-based interactions provide a robust framework for creating tolerance and sustainable social harmony in a globalized society.
