This study aims to explore the benefits of extensive viewing and find out the perceptions of EFL students regarding its use. Extensive viewing is a concept for acquiring a second language (L2), where students watch TV, film, or video and use media according to their interests. This research employs qualitative methods, utilizing a case study approach, then exploring and describing the benefits of extensive viewing in acquiring knowledge or skills in English or a second language. The instruments of this research are questionnaires, interviews, and diary studies administered to 128 FKIP Uniska students who are English as a Foreign Language Learners. This research adopts constructivist theory, where students actively construct knowledge through self-directed, interest-based activities rather than passively receiving information. Abstract

Characters education is crucial in Indonesian pedagogy to address the challenges of the 21st century, evidenced by Ministry of National Education and Culture attempts to promote character-building values in academic documents in different curriculums. Previous research has examined character values in lesson plans, syllabus, textbooks in the 2013 curriculum, and even media such as songs and movies or other literary works. However, no research has analyzed character values in teaching modules within Merdeka Curriculum. This study investigates character building values in five English language teaching modules created by student teachers, using by Ministry of National Education and Culture of character indicators which were derived from five of character building values at the stage of teaching (pre, core and post-teaching). A qualitative content analysis of the findings revealed that responsibility (42%) appeared most frequently, followed by communicative (25%), Hard Work (19%), Religious (11%), while nationalism (3%) was least represented. This result indicates that the character values in the teaching module are aligned of the national education policy, so it is worthy of review for all educators, especially for student teachers to be well-prepared and competent in designing character-based teaching modules for English learning at the high school level to build students' competencies that are intact academically and character-wise.

Abstract

The title of this research is An Analysis of Moral Values and Character Education Depicted in the Film Wonder. This research addresses the issue of declining moral values among youth, as reflected in the increasing prevalence of bullying and intolerance in educational settings. This research aims to examine how the 2017 film Wonder can be utilized as a medium for teaching moral values and character education. Specifically, the study investigates how selected scenes, character dialogues, and interactions portray ethical principles and personal virtues. Descriptive qualitative method and content analysis are used as a research method; the data were categorized and interpreted through Eyre’s framework, which outlines eleven core moral values and Lickona’s theory of character education, which emphasizes the development of virtues such as empathy, courage, and respect in formal learning contexts. Data were collected by analyzing the film’s script and narrative structure, identifying key moments where moral and character values were evident. The analysis reveals that Wonder frequently portrays values such as respect, self-confidence, and love, with empathy emerging as the most dominant character trait. These findings suggest that films like Wonder can be effectively integrated into classroom instruction to foster moral reasoning, empathy, and emotional intelligence, thus supporting the development of ethically aware and socially responsible learners.

Abstract

This research examines how self-regulated learning strategies influence stress levels, motivation, and time management among working graduate students, specifically regarding their writing abilities. The investigation addresses ongoing debates about whether employment helps or hinders academic success for graduate students. A qualitative approach was employed using open-ended questionnaires distributed to English Education graduate students working full-time or part-time. This method enabled efficient data collection within a limited timeframe while maintaining depth of insight. The smaller sample size typical of qualitative research allowed for detailed analysis of participant experiences and strategies. With the majority of graduate students now balancing employment alongside their studies, understanding effective learning strategies becomes increasingly crucial. Previous research presents conflicting findings: some studies suggest that working negatively impacts academic performance, while others demonstrate that employed students can maintain high achievement levels through strategic approaches to learning. Results support that employed graduate students can excel academically when implementing effective self-regulated learning techniques. Participants demonstrated exceptional writing performance, evidenced by their published scholarly articles. These outcomes suggest that strategic time management, motivation maintenance, and stress reduction techniques enable working students to produce high-quality academic work. The findings challenge assumptions about employment as a barrier to academic excellence. Instead, they highlight how purposeful learning strategies can help graduate students successfully navigate the dual demands of work and academic responsibilities, particularly in writing-intensive disciplines. This research contributes valuable insights for supporting the growing population of employed graduate students.

Abstract

Testing is essential in education because it helps teachers measure how much students have learned. Teachers typically use multiple-choice and essay questions for this purpose. This research examined what types of thinking skills English teachers focus on when creating final exams for eighth-grade students, using Bloom's educational framework as a guide. The study also looked at the difficulties teachers encounter while developing these tests. The researchers used interviews and systematic observation methods to gather information. They analyzed a 50-question test that included 45 multiple-choice items and 5 essay questions. The results revealed that the test mainly assessed three types of thinking: memorizing information, comprehending concepts, and analyzing material, with comprehension questions being the most common. Teachers identified two main challenges: limited time for test development and difficulty categorizing questions according to Bloom’s taxonomy. To address these issues, they suggested scheduling test creation during holidays and offering clearer institutional guidelines. They also recommended enhancing teachers’ understanding of Bloom’s taxonomy to improve test design. This study contributes to English language assessment by revealing a strong focus on lower-order thinking skills. It highlights the need for professional development and institutional support to help teachers design more balanced assessments that include higher-order thinking skills. Such improvements can lead to more effective language assessment practices aligned with broader educational goals.

Abstract

Mastering English communication skills is essential in today's globalized world, yet Indonesian students often struggle due to limited authentic practice and reliance on traditional, less interactive methods. This study investigates the use of HelloTalk, a mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) application, to address these challenges by enhancing oral communication skills among English Education students. Specifically, it examines how HelloTalk bridges the gap in real-world language practice while identifying its limitations and proposing solutions. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving semi-structured interviews with six third-semester students taking a Professional Listening and Speaking course at a private university in Surabaya. The results indicate that HelloTalk effectively improves speaking fluency, vocabulary retention, and cross-cultural communication through direct interaction with native speakers. However, key challenges emerged, including difficulties in finding compatible language partners, the lack of message-editing features leading to communication errors, and the app’s high storage consumption. To mitigate these issues, the study proposes a blended learning approach that combines HelloTalk’s interactive strengths with structured classroom instruction, such as targeted grammar exercises and vocabulary drills to create a more balanced and effective learning experience. This integration ensures students benefit from both authentic practice and systematic skill development. The findings highlight the need for technical improvements to HelloTalk and underscore the importance of combining digital tools with traditional pedagogy.
