English Focus was launched with the intention to make quality research output available for scholars in the field of language education. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as language testing as far as they have clear implications for language teaching/learning. Reviews of the literature are not acceptable for this Journal; however, status papers by experts in the field are called for as long as explicit implications are drawn in favor of language teaching and learning. English Focus (p-ISSN: 2614-638X and e-ISSN: 2614-6355) is an open access academic, scholarly peer-reviewed journal and follows a double-blind review policy. The Journal is scheduled for publication semiannually, in July and December, with the first issue to appear in December 2017.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the peer-correction technique in writing classes. The participants of the study were the students of a Composition 1 Class in one of the universities in Bandung. There were 8 weeks in the process. The peer-correction was done every week with different kinds of paragraphs. For the first week, the students did peer-correction in pairs. It was to know the rules, what to be corrected and how it had to be done. And for the rest of the weeks, they did peer-correction using a laptop and presented the paragraph through an LCD projector so that each of the students got all the attention in class and also could correct their classmates’ paragraphs together. Data collection methods were questionnaires and interviews. There are 22 statements in the questionnaire sheet and 8 questions in the interview session. The results of the research were; there were 5 advantages of applying the pre-correction technique and 2 disadvantages found.

Abstract

This research described the register forms and functions in animal feed buying and selling activities in Wonosobo Central Market and their uses as a learning reference for the Indonesian negotiation text materials. This is a descriptive-qualitative research. The data in this research were utterances containing registers obtained from the animal feed buying and selling activities in Wonosobo Central Market. Based on the research results, there were 28 registers used in animal feed buying and selling activities in Wonosobo Central Market. Those registers were in the form of words, phrases, abbreviations, and acronyms. The registers were 12 root words, 5 words with affix, 3 compound words, 1 repeated word, 1 phrase, 5 abbreviations, and 1 acronym. Each register has a special meaning and it is only known in animal feed buying and selling activities. The obtained data might be used in the negotiation text learning for the X grade students of Senior High School on Basic Competency (Kompetensi Dasar) 3.0 which evaluates the submission, offering, and agreement in spoken and written negotiation texts

Abstract

In this study, researchers examined how the implementation of the ESCO method combined with video material media in improving the ability to write English procedure text. This study belongs to Class Action Research. The data analysis method used descriptive quantitative method. The respondents in this study were 44 first-year students of the Applied Bachelor of Public Sector Accounting department of Polytechnic Harapan Bersama who were gathered in one class and given the same treatment. The data were collected using a pretest-posttest assessment and a questionnaire. The data obtained in the form of a pre-test and post-test were analysed to see if there was an increase in the student's ability to write procedural texts. The analysis of the pre-test and post-test scores was combined with the students’ questionnaire which contained students’ opinions regarding the implementation of the ESCO method as a learning method. The results of this study indicated that there is an increase in the student's ability to write procedural texts in English as an improvement between their pre-test and post-test scores.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reading material in the English textbook of Class XI students, as well as to determine the types of reading texts available in the textbook and whether the type of reading text is under the 2013 Curriculum, and has met three aspects, namely the content aspect, the presentation aspect, and language use based on Pusat Perbukuan of the Ministry of National Education. Researchers used a qualitative research design where the results were be presented in words without statistical calculations. Another instrument was the checklist form used during the research analysis. The data were collected from reading materials in the textbook. The results showed that the reading materials in English textbooks were following the criteria for quality English textbooks recommended by Pusat Perbukuan of the Ministry of National Education.

Abstract

This study presents the analysis of the teacher-student interactions in online and offline EFL classes. The objectives of this study are to identify the teacher-student interactions and to analyze the implementation of the types of teacher-student interactions in EFL classes. It is descriptive qualitative research involving three English teachers and thirty students for each class at SMP Ihsaniyah Tegal as the participants of the research. The data were collected through direct classroom observation and videos taken in the class. The data were analyzed based on a FLINT System. The results in this study by observation from the three teachers showed that the type of ‘Asks Question’ from the teachers’ talks and ‘Student Response Open-Ended’ from the students’ talks had the highest percentage. It means that teachers wanted the students to be more active and braver to speak in English. The conclusion of this study indicated that the dominant types of teacher-student interactions in EFL classes are ‘Asks Question’ from the teachers’ talks and ‘Student Response Open-Ended’ from the students’ talks because the teacher tended to act as a facilitator that facilitated students to speak and be more active and as a resource providing the information needed by students. In addition, the students had more opportunities to speak and interact in EFL class by giving responses to the teachers’ talks.

Abstract

This paper examined the teacher’s metacognitive strategies application in teaching English at non-formal learning community. It is a descriptive qualitative research. It focused on activities in the learning community, which the researchers analyzed the teacher’s metacognitive strategies. The instruments used were interview and questionnaire. In this study, the roles of the researchers were as an investigator and interviewer. The subjects of this research are one English teacher and ten students at PKBM Cahya Mulya Taman Pemalang. The study revealed that eventhough the teacher could structurally apply the aspects of metacognitive strategies, he found some difficulties in applying some aspects due to the limited amount of the teaching time allocation, the students’ lack of English vocabulary mastery, and limited teaching facilities. Some efforts were done to overcome the problems.

Abstract

Reading is an interactive activity in which readers use successful reading strategies to create a meaningful representation of a text. The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of achievement and affective factors on reading comprehension. The research's goal is to review the national and international literature on reading skills and reading comprehension achievement. The researcher explained the terms reading and reading comprehension as well as the principles for teaching reading. Problems, competencies, techniques, and types of reading comprehension were also discussed. According to a review of the research, teachers and students require wide information specifically in terms of reading comprehension to acquire reading comprehension effectively.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most important skills for foreign language students to master. Writing skill is essential since it is needed frequently in business and higher education. However, writing is one of the skills that is considered difficult by most students where they often make errors and mistakes. In the field of language learning, error analysis plays an important role. By knowing at least common mistakes, the students can learn and they will not make the same mistakes again in the future. This study concerns an analysis of students’ errors in paragraph writing. This study employed an observation research method to analyze the data from students’ tasks in paragraph writing. The data were collected, identified, and analyzed. The findings indicated that the most errors made by the students were in spelling and tenses. In addition, students’ errors were also found in verb arrangement.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the students’ obstacles when writing a thesis proposal. Subjects of this study were 20 learners in the English Language Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University in the academic year 2020-2021. The data were collected by using a questionnaire with 27 items to obtain students’ opinions about their problems in writing a thesis proposal. A descriptive quantitative design was used in this research. Having revealed the research analysis, it was found that the participants experienced four types of obstacles: 1) describing data analysis (40 %), 2) finding relevant references (60 %), 3) lack of vocabulary (50 %), and 4) writing theoretical and framework (45 %). To solve the learners’ problems in accomplishing the thesis proposal, there are some suggestions. Students should learn more about grammar and practice how to arrange qualified thesis and read various books to get new vocabulary. The advisors should give a detailed and specific explanation to make sure the students understand the explanation.

Abstract

This study concerns with how teachers apply TPACK for teaching English through Google Classroom platform for vocational high school. The objectives of the study are to find out how teachers apply TPACK for teaching English through Google Classroom and the teachers' difficulties in applying TPACK for teaching English through Google classroom platform for vocational high school. The subjects of this research are three English teachers who used Google Classroom platform in teaching English class. An interview was conducted to collect the data and it was described by using the descriptive qualitative method. It showed that learning and teaching process by using Google Classroom is different with face-to-face interaction. It makes teachers must adapt because teacher found difficulty to use any method and strategy when using Google Classroom. Furthermore, teachers prefer to share Pdf or Word files rather than video because video has a large capacity. Students who couldn’t connect their devices to the internet couldn’t fill in the register and were late to submit the assignments.
