Abstract

English as a global lingua franca presents challenges for students in understanding the language in Indonesia, where English is taught as a foreign language. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the use of visual literacy in English language learning. The use of visual literacy, such as images and videos, has been shown to help improve students' comprehension and engagement in the learning process. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach involving seventh-grade students at a middle school in Jember, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations and interviews. The results showed that visual literacy has a positive impact on students' understanding of English language material. Students find it easier to grasp concepts when supported by visual media. Additionally, the use of visual literacy also increases students' motivation and interest in learning, making the learning process more interactive and enjoyable. In the independent curriculum, English language learning encompasses six skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, reflecting, and presenting, all of which can be supported by the use of visual literacy. Visual literacy not only facilitates the understanding of vocabulary but also encourages students to think critically and creatively through visual interpretation. This creates a more dynamic learning environment and fosters active participation from students. The conclusion of this study is that visual literacy can be an effective tool in enhancing the quality of English language learning, particularly in helping students to understand or remember vocabulary and enhancing students’ English language skills.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of panel discussion on the speaking skills of 2nd-grade senior high school students. This research employed a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design, where the subjects were not randomly assigned to the treatment group. The instrument used to collect data for this research was a rubric focusing on criteria such as content, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, which scores the students' speaking skills based on the speaking test. The researcher used a subjective test to measure the students' speaking skills in this test. In the control group (XI-9), pre-test scores ranged from 40 to 68, with a mean of 50.86, and post-test scores ranged from 40 to 72, with a mean of 57.49. In the experimental group (XI-10), pre-test scores ranged from 40 to 76, with a mean of 55.43, and post-test scores ranged from 40 to 84, with a mean of 70.60. The results indicated that panel discussion significantly improved students' speaking skills. For future research, it is suggested that more of the scope sample be explored and that the research be longer than this one to get a more comprehensive result. In addition, more research must be done to advance the impact of the panel discussion on other English skills.

Abstract

The global appeal of animated films has increased significantly, leading to an urgent demand for high-quality and easily comprehensible subtitle translations. This research investigates the complexities of subtitle translation in the animated film Frozen (2013) by exploring the interaction between visual elements and dialogue. Employing multimodal discourse analysis, the study evaluates how subtitles can enhance or diminish the narrative experience by aligning with or diverging from the film’s visual context. The findings indicate that while translations generally capture the intended meaning and tone, there are critical moments—especially in humorous scenes—where subtitles fail to fully resonate with the accompanying visuals. This misalignment underscores the importance of a refined approach to translation that considers the interplay of various expressive modes. The research ultimately aims to contribute to best practices in audiovisual translation, emphasizing the need for coherence between subtitles and visual storytelling to enrich audience engagement.
