Abstract

This study examines the term 'Ameen' in the Qur'an and its relevance in the context of the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections in Indonesia, where there are symptoms of politicization of religious symbols in the public sphere. The word 'Amen', which is traditionally interpreted as an affirmation of prayer in the worship practice of Muslims, has expanded its meaning  from a spiritual function to a political symbol used as an acronym for a certain pair of candidates. This study employs a qualitative approach using critical discourse analysis with the method of critical discourse analysis to explore the theological meaning and symbolic transformation of the term 'Amen'. Data was obtained through the study of classical and contemporary interpretations, hadiths, campaign documentation, and digital narratives on social media. The results of the study show that the use of 'Amen' in politics tends to reduce the sacred meaning to rhetoric, creating ambiguity between religious expression and political support. This phenomenon has a social impact in the form of polarization, segmentation, and exclusion in Muslim society. By combining symbolic political theory and maqāṣid al-syarī'ah, this study emphasizes the need for a critical awareness of the use of religious symbols in politics so that the sanctity of Islamic texts is not reduced to a pragmatic tool of power.

Abstract

This study stems from the contradiction between the concept of mitsāqan ghalīẓan as a strong marital bond and the continued prevalence of unregistered marriages, which have the potentian to disregard the protection of the civil rights of husbands, wives, and children. This study aims to analyze the authenticity of hadiths on marriage (munakahat) through takhrij al-hadith and to examine their implementation from a contemporary fiqh perspective based on the empirical reality of unregistered marriages. This study employs a qualitative method whit a normative-empirical approach that combines literature review and field research through interviews and observations. Normative data were obtained from hadiths in the Kutub al-Tis’ah, fiqh Literature, and legislation, while empirical datawere obtained from the Head of the Religious Affairs Official (KUA), religious counselors, community leaders, religious figures, village imams, and those involved in informal marriages in Suro Makmur Subdistrict, Aceh Singkil Regency. The research results indicate the the hadith regarding the giardian, witnesses, and the public announcement of marriage are classified as ṣaḥīḥ li ghairihi or ḥasan li ghairihi, thereby emphasizing the importance of transparency in marriages contracts. Field findings indicate that the practice of informal marriages is generally influenced by underage marriage, administrative obstacles, economic factors, and family-related social issues. Differences in perspective between KUA officials and religious leaders also reveal a gap between the validity of classical fiqh and the need for modern legal protection. This study concludes that marriage registration constitutes an implementation of maṣlaḥah mursalah and aligns with objectives of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah in protecting religion, lineage, honor, and the civil right of the family; thus, the practice of unregistered marriages is no longer relevant to maintain in the context of a modern rule-of-low state.

Abstract

The Buton Sultanate in the 19th century CE was at the peak of its intellectual golden age, driven by the dual role of Sultan Muḥammad ‘Aidrūs as both a political ruler and an ulamā actively shaping the local intellectual tradition. This article examines his contribution to Hadith transmission in the Nusantara by examining the intertextual relationship between the Sabīl al-Salām manuscript by ‘Aidrūs and the book Bulūgh al-Marām by Ibn Ḥajar. This study employs a library research method, using primary sources a manuscript copy of Sabīl al-Salām from the British Library collection (EAP212/2/17) and the text of Bulūgh al-Marām. The data analysis technique applies Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality approach to trace textual transformations. The results of the study reveal the presence of four intertextual principles: (1) haplology (textual simplification by omitting explanations of the chains of transmission or sanad for the readers' practicality); (2) expansion (broadening the scope of chapter titles to be more holistic); (3) modification (adjusting the Hadith content to more prominently highlight the virtues of deeds in accordance with the sociological needs of the Butonese society); and (4) parallelism (similarities in the reference hierarchy of the primary authoritative Hadith books). Additionally, the level of accuracy of the Hadith quotations by ‘Aidrūs proves to be remarkably high, indicated by the high precision of the text (matan) redaction's conformity with the original reference Hadith books, leaving only a few minor discrepancies. In conclusion, this manuscript proves that the adaptation of global texts in the Nusantara represents an effort of vernacularization that enriches local Islamic literature.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of the qira’at (Qur'anic recitation) study tradition after the Covid-19 pandemic through Zoom-based learning communities in Indonesia, focusing on changing patterns of learning interaction, the preservation of sanad, and the formation of a digital religious culture. While previous research on online Qur'anic learning has largely addressed pedagogical effectiveness, tahfiz, and virtual maqra'ah, the question of how the authority and legitimacy of sanad are renegotiated when talaqqi moves into virtual space remains under-examined; this article addresses that gap. The study uses a qualitative field-research method with a virtual-ethnographic design, informed by Hine's virtual ethnography and Campbell's digital-religion framework. Data were obtained through participant observation of online halaqah, semi-structured interviews with twenty informants (sanad-holding qira’at teachers, Ulumul Qur'an lecturers, and community members from several regions of Indonesia), and digital documentation in the form of Zoom recordings and learning archives. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with source, method, and time triangulation. The findings show that Zoom-based qira’at communities sustain the traditions of talaqqi and scholarly sanad through the adaptation of digital technology, expand access for women and working professionals, and cultivate cross-regional spiritual solidarity. Rather than claiming a wholesale new paradigm, the study reads these practices as a form of mediated talaqqi, in which sanad continuity is preserved while its documentary and spatial form is reconfigured. The study concludes that the digitalization of qira’at is best understood not as a replacement of tradition but as an adaptive extension integrating sanad, spirituality, and digital technology, whose long-term theological legitimacy still requires further scholarly and juristic evaluation.
