Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the professional competence of elementary school teachers in Barru Regency in designing and implementing the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) learning model in Science subjects. Twenty-first-century learning requires teachers to integrate multiple disciplines to develop students’ critical, creative, collaborative, and communicative skills. However, in practice, elementary school teachers still face limitations in understanding and skills in implementing integrated STEAM-based learning. The implementation method for this community service uses a training and mentoring approach, including the socialization of STEAM concepts, workshops on developing STEAM-based science learning tools, teaching practice, and reflection and evaluation. The results of the activity indicate an improvement in teachers’ understanding of the STEAM concept and their ability to develop STEAM-based science learning tools. This activity is expected to contribute to improving the quality of science learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

Local farmers in Bintuni District do not yet understand cultivation techniques properly, resulting in low agricultural production. The purpose of this training was to provide an understanding of organic farming and improve the skills of farmers from the Meyah tribe in the Bintuni District, Teluk Bintuni Regency, in making organic fertilizers and organic pesticides. The training used discussion and practice methods. During the discussion session, the Unipa PkM team presented agricultural cultivation techniques, organic farming, and pest and disease control. Participants were very enthusiastic in listening to the material presented and provided a lot of feedback regarding obstacles encountered in the field. In the practical session, participants were given the opportunity to make organic pesticides from garlic and papaya leaves. In the final activity, participants made organic fertilizer from weeds, kitchen waste (vegetable scraps, etc.), and organic fertilizer from market waste. Both methods were very effective because they generated community enthusiasm, as can be seen from the responses given. Based on respondent data, there was an 85% increase in understanding of organic farming and cultivation techniques.

Abstract

The limited variety of adaptive physical activities in Physical Education, Sports, and Health learning at Special Schools (SLB) has constrained teachers’ ability to design instruction that aligns with the characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities. This community service program aimed to enhance teachers’ competence through training on modifying petanque games. The method employed was service learning, an experiential community engagement approach that integrates service provision with hands-on practice. This approach enabled teachers not only to receive theoretical knowledge but also to actively engage in practice and reflection, thereby improving their applied competencies. The program was implemented through pre-implementation, implementation, and evaluation stages involving 10 PJOK teachers at SLB Negeri Surakarta. Evaluation was conducted using pretests and posttests to assess knowledge, while observations were used to evaluate practical skills. The results demonstrated an increase in teachers’ knowledge ranging from 39% to 53%, as well as improved practical abilities in designing PJOK lessons through the modification of game rules, adaptation of equipment, and adjustment of fundamental techniques. The program strengthened teachers’ pedagogical capacity and supported the sustainable development of adaptive physical education learning.

Abstract

The underutilization of pineapple peel waste and fluctuations in pineapple prices are among the challenges faced by Tinggiran Darat Village. The objective of this Community Empowerment Partnership (PKM) initiative is to empower pineapple farmers by transforming pineapple peel waste into economically valuable products, namely eco-enzymes and liquid laundry detergent. To address these issues, the program adopts an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, involving 40 members of the PKK/ Pemberdayaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (Family Welfare Movement) and youth organizations. The evaluation results through pretest and posttest showed a significant increase in all indicators of participant understanding, namely from 52.25 to 87.5 on the eco-enzyme concept, from 50.0 to 86.75 on the production process, from 48.0 to 89.0 on environmentally friendly detergent products, and from 60.0 to 87.5 on digital marketing and branding aspects, all of which were in the very good category. In addition, the results of the public perception analysis showed a positive level of acceptance of eco-enzyme-based detergent products, with 84.4% of respondents rating the product's cleaning power as good, 90.6% stating it was safe for the skin, 78.1% rating the packaging as quite attractive, and 81.3% stating a willingness to reuse and recommend the product. As an explicit impact, the community is now able to independently process previously discarded pineapple peels into marketable natural detergent products. This has proven effective in reducing the village's organic waste volume while simultaneously creating new, sustainable economic income opportunities for the local community.

Abstract

The low English proficiency among the Indonesian society is partly influenced by the dominance of learning approaches that focus on grammar and vocabulary memorization, thereby limiting students' opportunities to use the language in meaningful communication. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an approach that emphasizes language use for authentic communication purposes, with information gap activities (IGA) serving as one of the primary techniques to foster classroom interaction. This community service activity aims to enhance the pedagogical competence of pre-service English teachers in designing and implementing CLT-based IGA. The activity was conducted using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, involving students from the English Education Study Programs at Universitas Sari Mulia and Universitas Lambung Mangkurat. The needs analysis results indicated that most participants lacked an adequate understanding of the IGA concept and still tended to employ traditional, teacher-centered learning activities. Through this training, participants gained an understanding of CLT principles and skills in designing communication-oriented activities centered on information exchange. Following the training, participants were capable of developing and practicing various information gap activities, such as Jigsaw Reading, Missing Schedule, and Spot the Differences, integrated into communicative learning scenarios. The questionnaire results demonstrated that this training strengthened the pedagogical competence of pre-service English teachers in designing communicative, interactive, and student-centered learning. Therefore, similar training needs to be conducted sustainably to support the quality improvement of communicative English language learning.
