Abstract

Mosquito-borne diseases frequently occur in tropical regions, such as Indonesia. The use of synthetic chemical repellents can pose health and environmental issues. Essential oil-producing plants, such as lemongrass (Cymbopogon sp.), have significant potential as safe, natural bioinsecticides. However, their utilization by the partner community remains limited to culinary spices or traditional beverages. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of the Gerakan Ekonomi Kaum Ibu (GEMI) partner community in processing essential oil-producing plants to produce household bioinsecticides. This program was implemented using the ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development) approach, which involved mapping local essential oil plant assets followed by participatory training to transform these assets into household-scale bioinsecticide products. The impact of this program was evaluated using pretest and posttest approaches, with indicators including increases in average scores, shifts in the score distribution, and improved understanding of essential oil concepts. These findings suggest that the ABCD approach and participatory demonstrations can be used to support the transfer of applicable skills, as evidenced by an increase in the average score from 80.48% to 91% (a 10.52% increase), a clear shift in score distribution from the 70–80 range to 90–100, and the ability of all participants (100%) to produce both dry and wet bioinsecticides. The resulting bioinsecticide products have potential advantages, including the use of affordable local materials, simple production processes, environmental friendliness, and the potential to be developed into economically valuable, independent home-based enterprises.

Abstract

Sweet potato is one of the main agricultural commodities cultivated by farmers in Gattareng Village, Marioriwawo District, Soppeng Regency, covering a total planted area of 52.3 hectares managed by 49 smallholder farmers. Despite an average productivity of 9.7 tons per hectare, farmers are unable to obtain optimal economic benefits due to their dependence on intermediaries who purchase the harvest directly in the field at low prices, typically ranging from IDR 3,000 to 4,000 per kilogram. Limited knowledge, skills, and access to post-harvest processing technologies further prevent farmers from transforming their abundant yields into higher-value products, resulting in substantial post-harvest losses. This Community Service Program (PkM) aims to enhance farmers’ capacity to process sweet potatoes into value-added products by providing training in appropriate processing technologies, hands-on demonstrations, and entrepreneurial mentoring. The program targets members of the Kabuttu Farmers Group in Gattareng Village. Implementation methods include workshops, practical training sessions, continuous technical assistance, and pre- and post-training evaluations to assess improvements in farmers’ knowledge and processing skills. The results indicate a marked improvement in farmers’ understanding and ability to apply post-harvest processing techniques. Participants successfully produced several processed sweet potato products with longer shelf lives and higher economic value than fresh tubers. The program has generated direct positive impacts, including increased processing capacity, diversification of income sources, and reduced post-harvest losses. Overall, this PkM initiative demonstrates that strengthening post-harvest capacity and introducing appropriate processing technologies are effective strategies for enhancing value addition, reducing vulnerability to price fluctuations, and improving the economic resilience of smallholder farmers in Gattareng Village.

Abstract

Despite increasing attention to financial literacy, limited contextual and Sharia-based interventions exist in pesantren settings. Therefore, this community service program aims to enhance students’ financial literacy through Sharia-based financial management training at the Ar Roudhoh Foundation, Jember. The program is motivated by the low level of students’ ability to manage personal finances and to support pesantren-based entrepreneurial activities. The method employed is Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving students, foundation administrators, and teachers (ustadz/ustadzah) in the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. The training was conducted through interactive lectures, group discussions, pesantren-contextual case studies, simulations of budgeting, financial record-keeping, and savings planning based on Sharia principles, as well as the use of daily and weekly financial control sheets. Service evaluation was systematically designed to measure both learning outcomes and program effectiveness. The evaluation process consisted of quantitative and qualitative approaches, including pretest and posttest instruments to assess changes in financial literacy levels, structured observation sheets to evaluate participants’ practical financial management skills during simulations, and participant satisfaction questionnaires to measure the relevance, clarity, usefulness, and applicability of the training materials in daily life. Pretest results indicated that 80% of students were in the low to moderate financial literacy category, with mastery levels ranging from 53% to 67%. After the training, posttest results showed a significant improvement, with 92% of students achieving a high mastery category (83%–100%). Improvements were observed in budgeting skills, financial record-keeping, understanding of Sharia financial principles, and savings awareness. Participant evaluations revealed that the training materials were easy to understand, relevant to students’ needs, and supported by effective methods and media. Overall, Sharia-based financial management training has proven effective in improving students’ financial literacy and fostering more disciplined financial behavior in accordance with Islamic values, thereby potentially supporting the sustainable economic independence of pesantren.
