Abstract

Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) contains various bioactive compounds that may affect internal organs, including the liver. This study aimed to examine the effect of bitter melon fruit extract on the microscopic structure of the liver in mice (Mus musculus). The research was conducted experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) without factorial treatment, consisting of five groups: untreated control, aquadest control, and treatment groups receiving bitter melon extract at doses of 750 mg/kg BW, 1500 mg/kg BW, and 2250 mg/kg BW, with five replications each. The extract was administered orally using a gavage needle at a volume of 0.1 mL/10 g BW daily for 40 days. The results showed that the extract did not significantly affect body weight or liver weight. Microscopically, the 750 mg/kg BW and 1500 mg/kg BW doses did not alter liver histology compared to the control, while the 2250 mg/kg BW dose caused histological damage in the form of hepatocyte steatosis. Macroscopically, the liver in the highest dose group appeared paler than in the control group, although the overall shape remained normal in all groups. It can be concluded that high doses of bitter melon extract may induce microscopic liver changes, whereas lower doses do not exhibit hepatotoxic effects.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of matoa leaves against Enterococcus faecalis and Helicobacter pylori bacteria. This study consists of sample preparation stages, sample extraction using 70% ethanol solvent with the maceration method, antimicrobial testing using the disc diffusion method. The treatments used were 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 10% extract, positive control Chloramphenicol 30 µl, and negative control distilled water each using 3 replications. Data were analyzed with SPSS 30 using the ANOVA test and Duncan's test. The test results showed positive results that ethanol extract of matoa leaves could inhibit the growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Helicobacter pylori bacteria, possibly because it contains secondary metabolite compounds. The largest inhibition zone diameter was found in the positive control in the form of Chloramphenicol 30 ppm, an antibiotic commonly used to inhibit bacterial growth, and the smallest was found in the negative control because it was only given sterile distilled water. The largest inhibition zone diameter of matoa leaf ethanol extract was found in Enterococcus faecalis with a concentration of 10%, which was 9.35 mm but had no significant difference with the other four extract concentrations. In Helicobacter pylori, the largest inhibition zone was found at a concentration of 12.5%, which was 14.13 mm and had a significant difference with other concentrations but showed no significant difference with the positive control.

Abstract

Postoperative infections, especially after childbirth, remain a serious medical issue as they can lead to complications, delay recovery, and increase antibiotic resistance due to the excessive use of synthetic drugs. Therefore, safer and more effective treatment alternatives, such as the use of natural substances, are needed. This study aims to examine the antimicrobial potential of a combination of Ageratum conyzoides, Mussaenda frondosa, and Acorus calamus extracts in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, which are common pathogens in postnatal surgical wound infections. The study employed a true experimental method with an antimicrobial sensitivity test design using the maceration technique. Extraction was conducted using 96% ethanol with three concentration variations: 40%, 80%, and 120%, in a 3:2:1 mixture ratio. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify secondary metabolite compounds, followed by an inhibition test using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that Acorus calamus extract contains flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins. Ageratum conyzoides, Mussaenda frondosa, and Acorus calamus all contain saponins with potential antimicrobial activity. The combination of these extracts demonstrated inhibitory effects against the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in surgical wounds, as evidenced by the formation of inhibition zones during testing.

Abstract

Red snapper is a source of animal protein with a highwater content so it is easily spoiled. Decay can be prevented by preservation such as natural and artificial preservatives. Natural preservatives can use natural ingredients such as bay leaves. Bay leaves can be used as a natural preservative because they contain antibacterial substances that can inhibit the growth of spoilage bacteria. The ability of bay leaves as a preservative can be seen with the SDS-PAGE method by looking at the protein profile. This study aims to determine the potential of bay leaf extract as a natural preservative in SDS-PAGE-based red snapper. This type of research is experimental based on the results of protein concentration, organoleptic test, and protein profile of SDS-PAGE results. There were 5 treatments of red snapper fish, namely fresh fish, fish without soaking stored 24 hours at room temperature, and fish with bay leaf extract with a concentration of 5%, 15%, and 25% for 30 minutes and then stored for 24 hours at room temperature.  The results showed that the concentration of bay leaf extract that has the potential as a natural red snapper is 25%. This is because the protein concentration with this concentration is the highest (3.7226 µg/ µL), the best organoleptic test, and the SDS-PAGE results are almost the same protein band as the fresh control. This study concludes that bay leaf extract has the potential to be used as a natural preservative for red snapper with the highest concentration of protein.

Abstract

The development of degenerative diseases is influenced by oxidative stress, which stems from an imbalance between free radicals and the body’s antioxidant defenses. Therefore, natural antioxidant supplementation is considered an essential preventive strategy. Chives leaves (Allium schoenoprasum) are functional foods containing various bioactive compounds; however, their potential as natural antioxidants remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity and toxicity profile of the extract through in vitro assays. The extraction process using maceration and percolation techniques with methanol as the solvent. The analytical procedures encompassed phytochemical profiling, quantification of total phenolic compounds using the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, and antioxidant capacity evaluations utilizing the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)). The resulting total phenolic content of 439.45 μg/mL, equivalent to 14.65 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per gram of dry weight (DW). The IC₅₀ values were 21.93 μg/mL (ABTS) and 13.06 μg/mL (FRAP), indicating strong antioxidant activity. Toxicity assessment using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test yielded an LC₅₀ value of 333.86 μg/mL, suggesting low toxicity.  These results indicate that the extract holds a great promise as a safe and effective source of natural antioxidants.
