Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges teachers face when teaching literacy skills among early graders, specifically kindergarteners and how the identified challenges impede their smooth teaching of literacy skills. The study employed ethnography design. Data was gathered through semi-structured interview guide. Purposive sampling technique was used to sample 12 participants for the interview. Data were analyzed using content and thematic analysis procedures.  The findings from the study revealed that challenges teachers encountered were related to; large class size, inadequate instructional resources, insufficient in-service training, and continuous professional development programs, learning disorders, and absence of supportive adults in the lives of kindergarteners. It was recommended that Shama District Education Directorate in collaboration with headteachers of the selected schools should organize in-service training for teachers to expose them to current trends in literacy instructional skills, train them on how to assist learners with disorders, and how to manage large class size. Again, Directorate of Education in collaboration with headteachers should organize Parent Association meetings and seminars to enlighten   parents and community members on the need to support and participate in their children’s education.

Abstract

Abstract

The sex education of children with LD (learning difficulties) has been researched less than that of typically developing children, which shows that more research is needed on the issue of sex education in children with LD (Barnard-Brak et al., 2014; Grove et al., 2018). Because children with LD do not know what to do and how to protect themselves when they are exposed to sexual abuse, it is necessary to provide those who are vulnerable with sufficient education (Lumley et al., 1998; Blake, 2013). Examining the opinions of the people and teachers who are closest to these children and educate them will contribute to this field. Interviews with 5 teachers based in the UK who work with children with learning difficulties aged 4-19 were conducted in 2020/2021. This qualitative research provides an overview of sex education and protection from sexual harassment, with a focus on sex education programmes such as RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) in special education schools, emphasizing their importance and developing programmes especially for children with LD. There is a review of the relevant literature and a section explaining the methodological approach chosen. The findings and analysis of the themes that emerged as a result of the interviews with the teacher participants are discussed, and recommendations for best practice in schools are identified, along with directions for future research on a larger scale.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the role of parents in supporting a child's preparation for primary school. The study uses a qualitative approach, data collection is carried out through observations and interviews as well as documentation studies of 50 parents living in the city of Bekasi. Data analysis in this study was carried out using Miles and Huberman's approach. The findings of this study suggest that parents play a role in preparing the child's physical factors such as health, hygiene and balance before entering primary school. Parents also play a role in providing cognitive support so that the child is ready to solve problems that will be encountered on a daily basis. In terms of language, parents have a role to play in providing a language rich environment, providing opportunities to speak and listen appropriately and involving children in activities that support language development. Emotional readiness includes the child's ability to manage their own emotions, have intrinsic motivation and be able to cope with stress or anxiety. It is important to remember that a child's readiness to learn can vary greatly from individual to individual. Each child has a different rate of development and may require appropriate approaches to facilitate their readiness to learn.

Abstract

Children's social development is how early childhood interacts with peers, adults, and the broader community to adapt. Parents and the environments are figures or models closest to children and become role models for children. This study aimed to determine children's social behavior and the role of the environment on the social behavior of children aged 5-6 years in the Nusukan Surakarta railway environment. This type of research uses descriptive qualitative methods—sampling using a purposive sampling technique. The data analysis technique used the Milles and Huberman model with three stages: data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results show that children's social behavior in the Nusukan railway area tends to be active, but some behaviors still need guidance so that children have good social behavior. It is inseparable from family environmental factors, both parents, siblings, peers, or other adults through their environment. Child development is strongly influenced by treatment or parental guidance for children in recognizing various aspects of social life or norms of social life. Social behavior is closely related to children's behavior in adjusting to the rules of society in the surrounding environment. Children obtain social behavior through maturity and learning opportunities from various stimuli provided by their environment.
