Abstract

Abstract

Batik motifs in the heritage of cultural arts are cultural assets that become characteristics, strong characters that are identical, of a region. Batik motifs that appear with various symbols of local wisdom of a particular region, show configurations that create a depth of meaning, ultimately providing cultural norms and values that are full of meaning. Along with the phenomenon of diversity, cultural assets of a region become a shared pride of the nation, so that territorial boundaries are no longer an obstacle when batik motifs have a cultural impact for a wider scope, when other regions, or government institutions want to attach this aspect of causality, so that it has a greater impact on uniting brotherhood, the power of nationalism, patriotism, which can be put forward, as an adage of diversity requirements, a representative manifestation in popular mural culture that is applied to the West Java Social Service institution, as part of the exposure of batik motifs as a treasure of civilization and national culture that is to be highlighted there, through the application of mural images of Indonesian batik motifs on the walls of the West Java Social Service.

Abstract

This study explores the role of public art in shaping community attachment to their environment and its influence on urban aesthetics, focusing on a case study of public art in Malioboro, Yogyakarta. The research employs a mixed methods approach (quantitative-qualitative) with a deductive method to analyze public perceptions of public art and its impact on public spaces. The findings indicate that public art has a positive and significant impact on place attachment, where public perception of these artworks contributes to their emotional connection with the environment. Additionally, the duration and frequency of visits influence how the public perceives public art. Further analysis reveals that public art provides significant aesthetic, social-functional, cultural, and economic benefits, including enhancing visual appeal, tourism attraction, local identity reflection, public education, and job opportunities for art practitioners. This study contributes to the understanding of the role of public art in shaping urban character and social interactions while serving as a foundation for developing policies and practices for public art in other urban areas.

Abstract

This article discusses the Drawing series “Experiencing Disharmony” as a reflection on the imbalance between humans and nature due to anthropocentric dominance. Based on mountain trekking experiences, the work depicts human alienation within vast and unpredictable landscapes, emphasizing submission to natural laws. The theoretical approach draws from mimesis, Romantic aesthetics, Apollonian–Dionysian duality, Gregory Bateson’s anti-anthropocentrism, and Raffaele Milani’s concept of landscape as a contemplative space. A research-based art practice is used, with landscape photography as the visual foundation. Layered pastel and charcoal lines on large paper record both physical and inner experiences. A small human figure facing away from the viewer reinforces alienation. Visual disharmony is conveyed through disproportional scale, metaphorical composition, and color limitations as an ecological awareness. Each of the six drawings is subtitled with geographic coordinates to highlight landscape as a reflective site.

Abstract

In Sundanese culture, there is a philosphy called masagi which focuses on perfection and integration of life experience, however with shock, anxiety, and trauma, this perfectionis is difficult to achieve. To protect ego from feelings of anxiety and traumatic experience faced by humans, ego defense mechanisms emerged. Thie seven of ego defense mechanisms is a tool for humans to manage their emotions and inner shocks that are felt when triggered by one thing or another. In this thesis, the author aims to represent Sigmund Freud’s five ego defense mechanisms through symbolism of things or objects that close to human daily life as a place to reflect on one’s identity and personality. The creation methods used in this work include data collection, incubation, elimination and verification stages. Each work created contains a mask as an individual’s personal symbol. This painting is presented with a still life painting approach in a realist style using oil paint on canvas.

Abstract

Rangda is a Balinese folklore with strong symbolic meaning and a source of inspiration in artistic expression. The creation of this work raises the transformation of the Rangda form as an idea for the creation of drawing works with the approach of interpretation and reinterpretation. Charcoal is used expressively to create a different form of Rangda, by further translating the author’s inner experience into the form of the work. This work will take the form of visual progression panels, with each panel connected to the other to display a complete flow. An expressionist approach is used to express the deep emotion, horrific atmosphere, and transformation of the Rangda figure in the drawing. The charcoal medium was chosen for its ability to present sharp contrasts, expressive, dark, and dramatic strokes. The creation of this work is a process to understand and translate the author’s inner experience, with the hope of realizing it into a ‘horrifying’ and mesmerizing visual work.

Abstract

Pamali is an oral tradition that acts as a social control that incorporates ethics and values through prohibitions or taboos, especially in children’s daily life, social life, time and place restrictions. The creation of this final project departs from the phenomenon of the fading value of the pamali tradition, especially the prohibition of activities before Maghrib in today’s younger generation. The visuals of this painting use a parody approach by combining elements of horror and facetiouness, as well as combining traditional symbols. Through humorous and witty visual exploration, pamali is no longer presented as something scary, but rather as a reflective cultural dialog and open to reinterpretation of its meaning. The creation method used is the practice-led research method, which is research conducted during the practice of the work, which is divided into three stages: (1) Pre-image stage; (2) Abstract image stage; (3) Abstract image stage. The result of this creation is a total of 3 canvases using acrylic paint, each illustrating the pamali expressions of Maghrib time.

Abstract

Indonesian cultural heritage is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the creative industries, including fashion. However, many potential historical sites haven’t been fully explored. One such example is the Batujaya Temple complex in Karawang, specifically Candi Jiwa. Candi Jiwa, believed to be a relic from the pre-Tarumanegara kingdom era, has unique architectural characteristics: a minimalist brick structure with a lotus flower-shaped layout, which sets it apart from other temples in Java that are typically made of andesite stone with intricate reliefs. This research on contemporary motif design aims to (1) Identify the visual and philosophical elements of Candi Jiwa’s architecture; (2) Stylize the architectural forms of Candi Jiwa into a motif design; and (3) Apply the resulting contemporary motifs to fashion accessory products. The design methods used include a literature study, visual observation, sketch exploration, form stylization, digitalization, and product mock-up creation. The result of this design process is a series of primary and derivative motifs inspired by the layout, structure, and texture of Candi Jiwa. These motifs were then digitally applied as mock-ups on accessory products such as scarves, vests, hijabs, and tote bags. This design project demonstrates that the simplicity and uniqueness of Candi Jiwa’s form have great potential to be translated into modern, ethnic motif designs with a strong narrative value.
