Abstract

This study is grounded in the importance of integrating language and content learning in qawāʿid instruction through yellow books in Islamic boarding schools, which naturally reflects the principles of the CLIL approach. It aims to examine how teachers integrate grammar learning with content understanding and how they adapt CLIL principles to address students' varying language proficiencies. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, using classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation analysis to explore the implementation of CLIL in qawāʿid instruction. The findings reveal that qawāʿid are not taught separately, but rather embedded within the study of classical Arabic texts, enabling students to engage with both language and content simultaneously. Teachers apply practical strategies such as utilizing texts like Naḥw Taṭbīqī, conducting Arabic-based assessments, and implementing scaffolding, differentiation, and specialized programs like Takhassus. These practices reflect CLIL's cognitive and communicative dimensions. Although the term CLIL is not explicitly used, its principles are contextually embedded in teaching practices. The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating that traditional pesantren pedagogy aligns with modern CLIL theory. It suggests that further theoretical development of CLIL should consider its natural applicability in classical Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

Low proficiency in Arabic writing among students continues to pose a significant educational challenge, primarily due to conventional teaching methods that lack integration of robust learning theories. This study examines the impact of combining behaviorist and cognitivist approaches to enhance Arabic writing skills among eighth-grade students at MTs Alif Laam Miim Surabaya. Utilizing a mixed-methods case study design, 30 students were purposively selected as participants. Data were gathered through observations, interviews, writing assessments, and questionnaires. Quantitative results using paired-sample t-tests indicated a statistically significant improvement in writing scores, with an average gain of 19.00 points (p < 0.001; Cohen’s d = 2.44). Qualitative findings revealed increased motivation, confidence, and reflective writing habits, including planning and self-evaluation. The study highlights that blending behaviorist drills with cognitively engaging strategies creates a more dynamic and student-centered learning atmosphere. The novelty of the research lies in demonstrating that integrating these theories not only enhances linguistic accuracy but also fosters metacognitive growth and writing creativity. This contributes valuable insights for curriculum development and teacher training. The proposed model offers a balanced, empirically grounded approach to Arabic writing instruction. Further studies are recommended to incorporate digital tools or explore constructivist methods and evaluate their long-term effectiveness.

Abstract

The Arabic language plays a crucial role in Islamic education, particularly in understanding Islamic sciences. However, traditional teaching methods often lack innovation, resulting in challenges such as limited vocabulary acquisition and insufficient speaking practice. This study examines the implementation of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method in Arabic language instruction at Pesantren Tahfizh Al-Bassam. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research explores CLIL implementation strategies, challenges encountered, and its impact on students. The findings indicate that CLIL enhances Arabic language skills, both oral and written, while also accelerating vocabulary acquisition and improving comprehension of Islamic studies. Pesantren strategies include teacher training, CLIL integration into the curriculum, and project-based assessments such as Arabic-language drama performances and short video production. While CLIL proves effective, challenges remain, including a shortage of qualified teaching staff and a lack of instructional materials. To address these issues, Pesantren organizes intensive teacher training and incorporates artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology into learning. This study concludes that CLIL is an innovative and effective approach to improving Arabic language education in Pesantren. With adequate support, this method has the potential to become a standardized approach to Arabic instruction in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

In the evolving landscape of Arabic language education, YouTube has emerged as a powerful medium for enhancing listening and speaking skills in Islamic boarding schools, where traditional oral-based instruction predominates. This study aims to explore strategies for optimizing YouTube as an interactive learning tool tailored to the pedagogical and cultural context of pesantren. Using a qualitative case study at Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah in East Java, Indonesia, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 22 participants (10 teachers and 12 students), focus group discussions involving 18 students across three groups, and classroom observations in selected Arabic classes, representing 40 participants with basic to intermediate Arabic proficiency. The findings reveal that structured exposure to Arabic-language YouTube content, combined with visual cues, interactive exercises, and contextual learning, significantly improves comprehension and speaking fluency. However, challenges such as inconsistent content quality, digital distractions, and limited technological access hinder optimal use. The novelty of this research lies in its proposed hybrid learning model, integrating YouTube-based materials with traditional teaching methods to preserve the strengths of oral transmission while embracing digital innovation. This study offers practical recommendations for educators and content creators in designing effective, culturally relevant digital resources for Arabic language learning in pesantren.

Abstract

Although Rijāl fī al-Syams by Ghassan Kanafani is recognized as a key work in Palestinian resistance literature, most previous studies have focused on its political themes and historical symbolism, with little attention to the linguistic construction of masculinity. As gender is a dynamic concept shaped by cultural and social contexts, examining male identity representation in literary texts is vital for understanding power relations, identity, and social roles. This study investigates masculinity in Rijāl fī al-Syams using a corpus linguistic approach, identifying patterns that portray male characters in terms of social roles, emotional expressions, ethical positioning, and comparing findings with Janet Saltzman Chafetz’s theory of masculinity. A mixed-method design combines with corpus analysis using Sketch Engine to examine word frequency, collocation, and concordance. Data analysis involves identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion. The results reveal nine high-frequency words positioning male characters as central figures, leaders, and father figures, along with twelve attributive phrases and four verbal phrases reflecting social, ethical, physical, and emotional dimensions. The findings highlight an alternative, more inclusive, humanized form of masculinity, aligning with Chafetz’s critique of hegemonic masculinity. This study demonstrates the value of corpus linguistics in Arabic literary research, offering an objective method for analyzing gender representation

Abstract

Islamic devotional music has become a transnational medium of spiritual expression, resonating across cultures and generations through emotional, lyrical, and symbolic depth. This study aims to analyze the semiotic structures embedded in the song Qolbi fi al-Madinah by Maher Zain, applying Louis Hjelmslev's metasemiotic framework. This qualitative research uses a descriptive-interpretative method, drawing data from the song's lyrics, melody, and official music video. The primary data sources are audiovisual materials published by Awakening Music, and the analysis involves segmenting expression and content into four levels: expression form, expression substance, content form, and content substance. Results show that the melody forms a progressive spiritual journey, while the lyrics encode themes of longing, submission, and devotion using ritualistic language. The music video further enhances the narrative through symbolic visuals of journeying toward Madinah, culminating in emotional and theological resolution. The study concludes that Qolbi fi al-Madinah constructs a multidimensional sign system where music, language, and imagery converge to produce mediated religious meaning. These findings contribute to the study of Islamic popular culture, digital da'wah, and semiotic-based religious communication.
