Abstract

Flavonoids in kelakai (Stenochlaena palustris) leaves function as powerful antioxidants that increase skin protection against UV radiation through absorption and scattering of ultraviolet rays. The presence of chromophore groups in the form of conjugated double bonds in flavonoids is able to absorb UVB rays so as to reduce their intensity on the skin and contribute to increasing the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of the moisturizer gel. This allows the product to function as a moisturizer as well as a natural plant-based sunscreen. This research aims to formulate kelakai leaf extract moisturizer gel, evaluate its physical stability, and measure the SPF value. The extract was obtained through maceration, then made into moisturizer gel with concentrations of 3% (F1), 5% (F2), and 7% (F3). For four weeks, organoleptic, homogeneity, spreadability, pH, stability, viscosity, and centrifugation tests were conducted. The results showed that all formulas were homogeneous, brownish yellow (F1), light brown (F2), and dark brown (F3) in color; spreadability 5.39-6.20 cm; pH 5.07-5.96; stable at room temperature and cold; viscosity 6192-7108 cPs; and no phase separation. In vitro SPF measurements using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 290-320 nm showed the highest SPF value in F3 (7% extract) of 27.51, while F1 and F2 were 18.49 and 21.94 respectively, so that the three formulas can provide optimal protection from UV rays.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major global health concern due to its often asymptomatic progression and its association with serious complications such as stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease. This study aimed to develop a functional food product, CelGar jelly, formulated from celery (Apium graveolens L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.), which are traditionally recognized for their potential antihypertensive properties. Three types of tests were conducted to evaluate the product. A hedonic (sensory) test involving 20 untrained panelists assessed consumer acceptance based on color, aroma, taste, and texture using a five-point hedonic scale. Laboratory analysis was performed to determine the moisture and ash content to ensure compliance with food quality standards. In addition, a functional test using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involved 12 respondents with hypertension to evaluate changes in blood pressure before and after the intervention. The results showed that CelGar jelly was generally acceptable to panelists, and the laboratory analysis confirmed that its moisture and ash content met the Indonesian National Standard for jelly candy. The functional test indicated a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure, while no significant change was observed in diastolic blood pressure. These findings suggest that CelGar jelly has potential as a functional food product supporting blood pressure management, although further studies with larger samples are needed to confirm its health benefits

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or action. The use of synthetic antidiabetic drugs has a variety of side effects, so the search for alternatives from natural ingredients is constantly being carried out. Yakon leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius) are known to contain flavonoids such as quercetin which have antidiabetic activity through antioxidant mechanisms and inhibition of glucose-decomposing enzymes. To determine the effectiveness of yakon leaf ethanol extract (EEDY) in lowering blood glucose levels (KGD) in male rats of the Wistar strain induced by nicotinamide and streptozotocin, and to compare it with the positive control of glibenclamide. The experimental study used 25 mice divided into 5 groups: negative control (Na-CMC), positive control (glycenchalamide 0.45 mg/kgBB). and three treatment groups with EEDY doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBB. Induction of diabetes is carried out with streptozotocin and nicotinamide. KGD was measured before and after treatment and was performed on days 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28. The administration of EEDY showed a significant reduction in KGD (p<0.05) compared to negative controls. The dose of 400 mg/kgBB provides the greatest decreasing effect, approaching the effectiveness of glibenclamide. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the negative control group and the treatment.

Abstract

Shallot peel (Allium cepa L.) is an agricultural waste that is known to contain secondary metabolite compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins that have the potential to have antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract and the fraction of n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water from onion peel against Escherichia coli bacteria. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol, then continued with liquid-liquid fractionation using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water. The antibacterial activity test was carried out using the disc diffusion method with concentrations of 40%, 60%, and 80%. The results showed that ethanol extract and shallot peel fractions had an inhibition against Escherichia coli, with the ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 80% indicating the largest inhibition zone. Thus, shallot peel has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial agent against Escherichia coli.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the acrylamide levels in animal-based (grilled chicken and grilled fish) and plant-based (grilled Cilembu sweet potato) foods using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method. Acrylamide is a carcinogenic compound formed in foods heated to high temperatures. The samples were tested qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative tests confirmed the presence of acrylamide in all three samples. Quantitative measurement was performed at a maximum wavelength of 267 nm and showed the average acrylamide levels in grilled Cilembu sweet potato, grilled chicken, and grilled fish were 51.3964 mcg/g, 38.1875 mcg/g, and 32.1383 mcg/g, respectively. The highest level was found in the grilled Cilembu sweet potato due to its higher carbohydrate content. Although the detected levels are below the daily toxic limit set by BPOM, excessive long-term consumption is not recommended. The method validation test showed results that met the requirements for linearity (r = 0.995) , accuracy (recovery range 101.58% - 106.33%) , and precision (RSD < 2%) , with LOD and LOQ values of 0.4111 and 1.3703, respectively. It was concluded that the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method is effective for the analysis of acrylamide in grilled food samples.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate and evaluate aromatherapy wax preparations from nightshade flower essential oil extract (Polianthes tuberosa) as an effort to handle non-pharmacological stress. The essential oil of the nightshade flower is obtained through the method of steam distillation from 10 kg of fresh flowers, resulting in 30 ml of essential oil. The characterization of simplicia showed a moisture content of 5.71%, a water soluble cider content of 17.13%, an ethanol soluble cider content of 18.01%, a total ash content of 10.82%, and an acid-insoluble ash content of 1.49%, meeting the requirements of the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Phytochemical screening identifies alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, triterpenoids, and glycosides. Aromatherapy candles are formulated in four variations of essential oil concentrations (Polianthes tuberosa): 0% (F0), 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3), as well as one positive control (F4). Physical evaluation shows all formulas have a good, dense, and air bubble-free appearance. The hedonic test showed that the F3 formula (15% essential oil) was preferred by the panelists in terms of aroma, shape, and color, and provided a significant relaxation and refreshment effect, close to the quality of commercial products. The F3's burn time reaches 10 hours, showing good durability.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by the dengue virus from the genus Flavivirus and the family Flaviviridae, transmitted through the bites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. One preventive measure can be achieved by using mosquito repellent lotion as a protective topical preparation. Bitter melon and papaya leaves contain flavonoids and antioxidants that have potential as natural repellent agents. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of lotion formulations containing bitter melon and papaya leaf extracts at concentrations of 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%. The research method included preparing lotion formulations based on an oil-in-water emulsion, followed by physical quality testing according to SNI 16-4399-1996, including assessments of homogeneity, emulsion type, two-week stability, and skin irritation. Repellent effectiveness was tested by observing the number of mosquitoes that died after contacting skin treated with the lotion. The results show that all formulations meet the physical quality requirements, are homogeneous, stable, possess an oil-in-water emulsion type, and do not cause skin irritation. The extracts increase mosquito repellency, as indicated by the greater number of dead mosquitoes with higher extract concentrations. The 6% formulation is the most effective concentration as a repellent or insecticidal agent against Aedes aegypti.
