Abstract

This research seeks to enhance active learner participation and thinking skills geography by exploiting the geographic learning opportunities presented in the physical setting of Jasper Stone Park. The study was conducted using a field study mixed methods approach with qualitative and quantitative components using local observations, interviewing experts, and GIS spatial analysis. Jasper Stone Park was selected for this case study because the park's geological features and history are ethnically and environmentally diverse. The learning module developed included interactivity and therefore students were actively engaged in the material. The results prove that students’ comprehension of geographical concepts as well as critical thinking skills are deepened. The research highlights the effectiveness of the incorporated local materials as resources of instruction and suggests a new direction of interdisciplinary curriculum and educational policy design. Moreover, the results justify the incorporation of local materials into geography lessons and make a case for the application of this strategy in other geographical areas. Future research could investigate the long-term impact of the developed learning module on students' geographical understanding and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This research aims to unlock the potential of Coban Canggu, a waterfall attraction, as one of the nature tourism destinations in Mojokerto Regency, Indonesia. The main objective of the study is This study aims to evaluate tourist attractions and provide recommendations for improving underdeveloped aspects to enhance the competitiveness of Coban Canggu as a leading tourist destination in East Java. Located in Pacet Village, Coban Canggu is known for its crystal clear waterfall, and beautiful scenery, easily accessible, and within the vicinity of other attractions. The study employed a mixed-method approach and gathered data through questionnaire surveys, field observations, and a literature review. Survey data was drawn from 40 visitors and a tourism manager in the study area using a random sampling technique. The ADO-ODTWA guidelines, provided by the Indonesian Department of Forestry, were used to evaluate the tourism potential of the study area. The findings reveal that Coban Canggu achieved an index of 73.7%, indicating the area is highly suitable for future tourism development. The key strengths of the area include its natural charm, diverse tourism activities, sufficient tourism accommodations, and accessibility. However, the site also faces challenges such as inadequate water supply, suboptimal cleanliness, and poor management practices that hinder its full potential. The site’s cleanliness is affected by limited waste management facilities and visitor behavior, while water supply remains insufficient and poorly managed. The research emphasizes the importance of improving infrastructure and facilities, optimizing management practices, and implementing sustainable tourism strategies. In addition, enhancing the promotion and integrating other attractions or services are recommended to boost its competitiveness. In conclusion, the study highlights Coban Canggu’s potential as significant and vital towards regional economic growth and tourism development, while advocating for sustainable practices to preserve its environmental and cultural value.

Abstract

Tourism has developed into an important economic sector with great potential for growth. However, the sustainability of the industry remains a challenge due to issues such as resource exploitation, ecological degradation, and lack of local community involvement. In light of these challenges, sustainable tourism has become a central theme in tourism destination management across Indonesia, including Punaga Beach in South Sulawesi. This study explored the characteristics of sustainable tourism management at Punaga Beach and the factors that influence its success. The study adopted a quantitative approach using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). Data were collected through interviews with relevant stakeholders, questionnaires, and field observations. The findings indicate that tourism management at Punaga Beach needs to be strengthened through strategies involving collaboration between the government, local communities, and the private sector. Based on the AHP analysis, the priority factors in sustainable tourism management include improving human resource quality, enhancing facilities, and raising community awareness of environmental conservation. This study provides recommendations for sustainability-based management improvements to achieve more efficient and long-term tourism development at Punaga Beach

Abstract

The problems in geography learning are difficulties in submitting and providing answers related to material and teacher-centered learning activities. This research aims to examine of the effect of the self-directed learning model on critical thinking skills and learning independence in geography subjects. This research is a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. Data collection methods include written test of essay questions about critical thinking skills and questionnaires regarding learning independence. The subjects of this study were class X-3 as the experimental class and class X-1 as the control class with a total of 34 students every class. Based on the results of Mann-Whitney U hypothesis testing, it is known that critical thinking ability has an Asymp. Sig 0.000 0.05. So, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, meaning that there is an effect of the self-directed learning model on critical thinking skills in geography subjects. Meanwhile, the learning independence shows the value of Asymp. Sig value of 0.000 0.05. then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means that there is an effect of the self-directed learning model on learning independence in geography subjects. The research findings show that the syntax of the self-directed learning model, namely implementation and evaluation as well as the syntax of identifying learner abilities and learning resources, affects critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, the syntax that affects learning independence is the syntax of identifying learner abilities and learning resources. Therefore, this research is expected to make a significant new contribution in understanding the self-directed learning model as an effort to improve critical thinking skills and learning independence in geography subjects.

Abstract

Indonesia's geography poses a threat to society due to its volcanic activity. Disaster self-awareness and disaster preparedness are considered to influence students' actions in dealing with eruptions, both before, during, and after a disaster occurs. Disaster self-awareness enables individuals to take appropriate actions when faced with a disaster, while preparedness involves a series of activities to anticipate disasters. By choosing SMP Negeri 2 Kemalang as the research site, which is close to Mount Merapi, it is hoped that this study can provide a better understanding of how disaster self-awareness can influence students' preparedness in dealing with eruptions. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of disaster self-awareness and preparedness of students at SMP Negeri 2 Kemalang in dealing with the eruption of Mount Merapi, and to determine the relationship between the two variables. The method used in this study is quantitative descriptive with a contingency coefficient correlation design. The results showed that the level of disaster self-awareness of students was 67.50% in the preparedness category. The preparedness variable obtained a percentage score of 77.06%, which is included in the high category. The relationship between the two variables is included in the weak correlation category with a value of 0.298. In an effort to improve students' preparedness for volcanic eruption disasters, schools need to integrate disaster education into the curriculum in a comprehensive and sustainable manner. Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of disaster education programs and to identify other factors that influence optimal student preparedness.
