Abstract

Folktales, as part of the rich oral literary tradition of the Indonesian archipelago, play a significant role in shaping and representing the cultural identity of a society. This study aims to examine the narrative structures within Indonesian folktales using Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist approach, which focuses on binary oppositions and the logical relationships between story elements. The method employed is qualitative-descriptive, utilizing narrative text analysis on five folktales from various regions in Indonesia, such as Malin Kundang (West Sumatra), Timun Mas (Java), The Legend of Lake Toba (North Sumatra), The Crying Stone (Kalimantan), and Sangkuriang (West Java). The findings reveal that beneath the variety of stories and geographical settings, there are recurring structural patterns, such as conflicts between child and parent, human and nature, or good and evil. These patterns reflect cultural values deeply held by the storytelling communities, such as respect for parents, moral consequences, and a spiritual relationship with nature. By mapping the structures within these folktales, the study finds that Indonesian folktales do not merely deliver entertainment or moral lessons, but also serve as symbolic representations of collective cultural identity. This study is expected to enrich the understanding of Indonesia’s oral cultural heritage and open pathways for cross-cultural interpretation through a structuralist lens.

Abstract

The research titled “Romantic Sadness in the Themes and Genres of Popular Minang Songs: A Producer’s Perspective” uses a semiotic analysis approach. Its aim is to uncover various symbols, metaphors, and hidden meanings that depict feelings of loss, longing, and disappointment, particularly in the context of romantic relationships. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, considered the most suitable for addressing the raised issues. The study is supported by theories focused on analyzing the production process and texts in popular Minang songs. Data is collected through literature studies on Minangkabau music, as well as direct observations from digital media where these songs were released. The results of the study show that romantic sadness, which frequently appears in popular Minang songs, has a profound impact on the social and cultural life of the community. These songs not only influence the way society perceives love, relationships, and loss, but also play an essential role in strengthening Minangkabau cultural identity and social values. Thus, this research provides new insights into how Minang songs with themes of romantic sadness reflect the beauty and complexity of emotions while preserving the Minangkabau culture.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form and function of the song Brahim Nalo in the Kalinong musical tradition in Kampung Baruh, Tabir District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province. The research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature review, observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Brahim Nalo has a simple compositional structure with short verses, a repeated answer melody performed twice, and no division between sections. Its musical form consists of a single complete melodic cycle with an interrogative phrase as the opening and a responsive phrase as the closing. Repetition functions as both a transition and reinforcement of the song’s message. In terms of function, Brahim Nalo serves as a medium of communication, emotional expression, entertainment, and aesthetic satisfaction, while also strengthening cultural identity, ensuring continuity of tradition, and fostering social cohesion among the people of Kampung Baruh. This study concludes that Brahim Nalo is not only of musical value but also plays a vital socio-cultural role, making it an integral part of community life and contributing to the preservation and enrichment of Indonesian traditional music.

Abstract

Mantau is a traditional music from Bangko District, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province. Mantau historically comes from a rhyme song carried by the Anman tribe who arrives at the port of Central Sumatra Island. The performance of mantau is sung by one person and the poems are arranged spontaneously into a rhyme form. Mantau underwent several changes on it’s performance, such as the formation of players, and the addition of musical instruments. In the past, mantau was only sung by one person, both male and female, but now mantau can be sung by two or more peoples, both male and female, from children, teenagers, to adults. The musical instruments are also varied. Nowaday mantau uses other musical instruments such as violin, drum, gong, and wooden kelintang for the vocal accompaniment which previously did not exist in mantau. Uniquely mantau music still survives and popular for it's community. This study seeks to see how mantau can survive and analyzed it through the musical aspect as well as the social aspect. The theory used to answer the problem proposed in this study is the "use" and "function" theory which is formulated by Alan. P. Merriam. The research method that used in this research is the ethnographic method. This study found that in its musical aspect, mantau has its own characteristics that make it different from other music in the archipelago, especially Jambi Province. The uniqueness lies in "sentak" which exist in the melody of the Mantau song. Meanwhile, in the social aspect, mantau is used by its supporting community as a medium for expression both for the older generation and young generation

Abstract

This study examines the creativity of the Arra’sye Pelayangan community in developing the Arab-Malay Zapin dance in Jambi City. The Arab-Malay Zapin is a performing art resulting from the cultural interaction between Arab and Malay traditions, carrying strong historical, aesthetic, and religious values within the Pelayangan community. The aim of this research is to analyze the creative strategies employed by the community to preserve and further develop the dance so that it remains relevant within contemporary cultural contexts. This study utilizes a qualitative approach with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis is based on theories of creativity and dance form. The findings show that the Arra’sye Pelayangan community has introduced innovations in movement structure, floor patterns, musical accompaniment, costumes, and performance presentation while maintaining the authenticity of traditional values. The community also ensures regeneration through regular training and by involving local youth in various performances. Additionally, contemporary adaptations in aesthetics and staging are implemented to enhance the appeal of the dance to younger audiences. These creative efforts demonstrate that traditional performing arts can continue to grow through a balanced approach that integrates cultural preservation with contemporary artistic needs.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Nagari Tuo Pariangan as a tourism village by analyzing its tourism potential, development challenges, and sustainable development strategies. Recognized globally for its natural landscape, terraced rice fields, and Minangkabau cultural heritage, Pariangan possesses significant tourism assets that require structured and sustainable management. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on a literature study, drawing on academic publications, policy documents, and previous research related to tourism village development and sustainable tourism. The findings indicate that the main challenges in developing Nagari Tuo Pariangan as a tourism village include limited infrastructure and accessibility, insufficient local human resource capacity, risks of cultural commodification, and unequal distribution of economic benefits. In response to these challenges, this study formulates a holistic development strategy encompassing improvements in accessibility and information and communication technology, continuous capacity-building programs for local communities, cultural preservation efforts, and the establishment of cooperative-based economic management to ensure fair benefit distribution. This study contributes to sustainable tourism discourse by offering an integrated development framework that can serve as a reference for tourism village management and future research.
