Abstract

Introduction: Stunting is a chronic condition characterized by impaired linear growth, cognitive deficits and long‑term economic consequences. South Sumatra reports one of the highest stunting burdens in Indonesia. This activity aimed to improve participants’ knowledge of stunting prevention and to monitor changes after educational and supplementary feeding activities. Methods: This community service was conducted during the 63rd Student Study Service (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang in July 2025 in four villages of Payaraman District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Pregnant women and mothers of infants and toddlers were recruited via local health posts and community leaders. Activities included didactic sessions explaining the definition, causes and prevention of stunting; distribution of high‑protein mung bean porridge fortified with moringa leaf; vitamin A supplementation; and pre‑ and post‑intervention questionnaires to assess knowledge. Results: A total of 98 participants attended the programme. Pre‑ and post‑tests were conducted in Payaraman Timur and Payaraman Barat. In Payaraman Timur, correct responses increased from 8 of 16 (50 %) at baseline to 13 of 16 (81.25 %) after the intervention, representing a 31.25 % improvement in knowledge. In Payaraman Barat, the post‑test showed that 24 of 29 participants (82.8 %) answered correctly. Qualitative feedback indicated that participants better understood the importance of adequate nutrition during the first thousand days of life and the role of hygiene and infection prevention in reducing stunting. Conclusion: The community education and supplementary feeding programme enhanced participants’ understanding of stunting prevention, as reflected by the marked increase in correct responses in Payaraman Timur. Future programmes should include pre‑ and post‑tests in all locations and monitor long‑term anthropometric outcomes to assess the impact on child growth. Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension in older adults is often accompanied by anxiety, which may worsen physical conditions and reduce quality of life. Coloring therapy, was implemented in this community service activity to reduce anxiety and improve the psychological well-being of older adults with hypertension. Methods: This community service was conducted at Posyandu Desa Ledug, involving 35 older adults hypertension who were registered at the posyandu, had good communication skills, and showed symptoms of anxiety. The aim to reduce anxiety and improve psychological well-being through coloring therapy. The implementation consisted of four phases, preparation include coordination with the local health center, assessment phase baseline blood pressure and anxiety measurement using the Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS), intervention phase and evaluation phase. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Most participants were aged 60 to 74 years (77.1%), female (85.7%), had hypertension for more than 10 years (57.1%), rarely attended check-ups, consumed antihypertensive medication (42.9%), and experienced moderate anxiety (65.7%). After  8-session coloring therapy intervention over 4 weeks, anxiety level improved. Mild anxiety increased to 57.1%, moderate anxiety decreased to 40%, and severe anxiety was found 2.9%. Conclusion: Coloring therapy had a positive effect in reducing anxiety among older adults with hypertension, shown by the increase proportion of mild anxiety and a reduce moderate and severe anxiety. This empowerment program indicates that coloring therapy can be applied as an alternative non-pharmacological intervention by healthcare providers and community health workers. Abstract

Introduction: Medicinal plants as an alternative herbal medicine source with many health benefits. However, the Tunjang Utara hamlet community's knowledge and skills in processing family medicinal plants as traditional medicine are still lacking. This study aims to conduct family-based socialization and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving community knowledge of the utilization of family medicinal plants for health maintenance. Methods: Current community services include three initial stages, which are pre-activities (observation and preparation); main activities (socialization by door-to-door method and herbal medicine plantation); and program evaluation. The target population was the community in Paokmotong village, with 47 participants as the sample. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, and a paired sample t-test to evaluate the effectiveness of the socialization program. The community in Tunjang Utara Hamlet is expected to actively utilize traditional medicinal plants and share this knowledge with other communities after the program. Results: At the observation stages, we found that Tunjang Utara’s communities did not know the benefit of family medicinal plants other than as additional cooking ingredients. The socialization was successfully carried out to give the information about the benefits of family medicinal plants. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge after the socialization program, with the mean score rising from 55.32 ± 8.14 (pretest) to 80.47 ± 7.26 (posttest), indicating a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001). Moreover, 10 medicinal plants were successfully planted at the Pokmotong village office. Conclusion: The socialization program effectively improved community knowledge of the use of family medicinal plants, as indicated by a significant increase in posttest scores relative to pretest scores. However, we suggest that the Paokmotong village government create a follow-up program to socialize the use of family medicinal plants in other hamlets in a sustainable manner. Abstract

Introduction: Maternal and infant mortality in Indonesia remain high, largely due to anemia in pregnancy, which increases the risk of childhood stunting. Ensuring balanced nutrition and optimal antenatal care (ANC) is essential for prevention. This study aimed to enhance pregnant women’s nutritional knowledge and ANC compliance through education and monitoring. Methods: A community-based intervention was conducted through training, mentoring, and monitoring activities involving primary health care staff and pregnant women. Key indicators included hemoglobin (Hb) status, iron–folic acid (IFA) supplementation adherence, and compliance with trimester-based ANC visits. Data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods and comparative proportion analysis across pregnancy trimesters. Results: Among 19 pregnant women who underwent Hb testing, 73.7% had normal Hb levels, while 26.3% were anemic. IFA adherence reached 100% in the first and second trimesters but declined sharply to 28.5% in the third trimester. Similarly, full-standard ANC coverage was achieved in the first trimester and decreased progressively in later trimesters. These proportional differences highlight critical gaps in late-pregnancy care despite early intervention. Conclusion: Structured nutrition education and ANC monitoring improved knowledge, supplementation adherence, and pregnancy care quality. Early intervention may reduce anemia prevalence and stunting risk. KEYWORDS antenatal care; anemia; nutrition education; pregnant women; stunting

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a major public health problem and often called a “silent killer” because it can cause serious complications without early symptoms. Community knowledge about prevention and management remains limited, especially in urban areas. This activity aimed to increase public knowledge about hypertension and to introduce the use of celery leaves (Apium graveolens L.) as a complementary herbal therapy. Methods: The community service activity was carried out in Kampung Ketupat, involving 20 residents. The program included lectures, distribution of educational leaflets, and demonstration of celery juice preparation. Knowledge improvement was assessed through discussions and active participation during the session. Results: Participants showed increased understanding of hypertension and expressed strong enthusiasm in learning about herbal management. The demonstration of celery juice preparation was well received, and participants reported confidence to replicate the practice at home. Conclusion: Health education on herbal management successfully improved public knowledge and self-efficacy of hypertension prevention and control. Celery juice was accepted as an easily applicable complementary method in daily life. KEYWORDS education; herbal; hypertension; prevention

Abstract

Introduction: Workplace accidents are a serious problem in industrial settings, particularly in high-risk production sectors such as pharmaceutical manufacturing. This community service activity aims to improve employee knowledge and skills in providing First Aid through theory-based and practical training. Methods: The training was conducted at a pharmaceutical company in East Java on August 28, 2025, and lasted 6 hours. Participants consisted of 25 employees purposively selected by company management to represent various divisions. The method used was a one-group pre-test and post-test design, utilizing a closed-ended questionnaire containing 15 multiple-choice questions to assess first aid knowledge, as well as a practical assessment to evaluate participants’ skills. The training covered basic first aid principles and focused on three core skills: basic life support, bandaging, and casualty transportation, delivered through interactive lectures and hands-on simulations using standard first aid equipment. Results: A significant improvement in both participants’ knowledge and practical skills after the training. The mean knowledge score increased from 12.36 (pre-test) to 14.27 (post-test), representing an increase of 1.95 points. Conclusion: First aid training was effective in improving both the knowledge and practical skills of employees. A notable increase in knowledge scores, along with enhanced competencies in basic life support, bandaging, and casualty transportation, indicates that the training successfully strengthened participants’ preparedness and ability to respond to emergency situations. These findings highlight the importance of integrating structured first aid training programs in the workplace to improve emergency response capacity. Abstract

Introduction: The growth of the elderly population poses challenges in managing degenerative diseases, nutritional problems, and functional decline. This study aimed to assess basic health status, nutritional profile, and body composition of older adults as a foundation for long-term care development. Methods: This community service was conducted in an institutional elderly care facility and community setting located in Madiun, East Java. Participants were adults aged ≥60 years, consisting of 51 subjects (12 institutionalized and 39 community-dwelling retirees). Inclusion criteria were older adults willing to participate, while exclusion included acute illness. Data were collected through interviews, observation, anthropometry, vital signs, body composition analysis, and blood glucose measurement. The activities comprised group discussions, direct observations, and health evaluations, complemented by interactive sessions like walking track games designed to assess and improve muscle strength, with health messages placed along the path. Additionally, brain exercise sessions were conducted to enhance motor coordination. Results: The participants were aged 58-88 years, representing an elderly population group. Findings revealed high prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (35.7%), hyperglycemia (14.6%), overweight/obesity (50%), and low bone mass (88.1%), despite 95.2% having normal muscle mass. Conclusion: Early screening and integrated interventions are essential for detecting abnormalities in blood pressure, glucose, body composition, and osteoporosis risks among older adults, including hypertension, hyperglycemia, overweight/obesity, and low bone mass, in order to promote healthy aging. Pondok Lansia Madiun has the potential to serve as a strengthen community-based long-term care facilities in Indonesia. Abstract

Introduction: Noncommunicable diseases, particularly stroke, have become a public health issue due to the increasing number of post-stroke patients requiring long-term care. However, the ability of Posbindu PTM cadre to care for patients remains limited due to a lack of knowledge and skills. Therefore, this community service initiative aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of Posbindu PTM cadre in caring for post-stroke patients. Methods: This community service program was carried out in Tanggul Village in collaboration with Posbindu PTM cadres, involving a total of 30 participants. Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) activities related to holistic post-stroke patient care were conducted. The variables measured were the cadre’ knowledge and skills in caring for post-stroke patients. Measurements were taken using questionnaires and observation sheets through a pretest and posttest design. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test to determine differences before and after the intervention. Results: The results of the intervention showed a significant improvement in the knowledge and skills of Posbindu PTM cadres regarding the care of post-stroke patients. The results showed a p-value < 0.05 for all variables, indicating a significant difference between pre- and post-intervention. Conclusion: The CIE-based intervention, combined with physical rehabilitation training and nutritional coaching, effectively improved the knowledge and skills of Posbindu PTM cadres in post-stroke patient care, indicating enhanced readiness of cadres to provide holistic, community-based care for post-stroke patients. Abstract

Introduction: Orphanages represent institutional care settings where children are vulnerable to health problems due to inadequate Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (CHLB), potentially leading to respiratory infections, diarrhea, tuberculosis, anemia, ascariasis, and dental caries. This community empowerment program aimed to improve children’s knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to CHLB through the implementation of an educative literacy corner combined with interactive health education. Methods: This community service involved 25 children at Baabur Rahmah Orphanage, Sidoarjo, conducted from July to October 2025. The program consisted of setting up a literacy corner integrated with interactive health education sessions delivered in four structured phases. The changes of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding CHLB in children were measured using structured questionnaires before and after community service. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to evaluate effect the program. Results: The educative literacy corner combined with health education significantly improved children’s knowledge (p = 0.000), attitudes (p = 0.008), and practices (p = 0.000) related to CHLB. Conclusion: The combination of an educative literacy corner and interactive health education is an effective strategy to improve children’s knowledge, attitude, and practice of CHLB. This community service provides a sustainable approach to promoting healthy behaviors while simultaneously fostering literacy culture among children in institutional care settings. Abstract

Introduction: Children with Special Needs at SLB Negeri Keleyan Bangkalan experience various challenges such as communication difficulties, emotional regulation issues, low self-confidence, and limited opportunities for self-expression. This study aims to develop and implement an expressive and therapeutic learning medium to improve emotional expression, emotional regulation, self-confidence, and learning motivation. Methods: The community service program SLIME ASA (Sensory Learning to Improve Exploration and Aspiration) was developed as a sensory therapy intervention using slime to stimulate sensory exploration, imagination, emotional expression, and motivation. The program design used a pre–post observational approach. The subjects of this program were all Children with Special Needs at SLB Negeri Keleyan Bangkalan, totaling 51 students. The variables measured in this program included activity motoric, participation rate, and parental support. Data were collected using observation sheets and analysis by comparing the pre- and post-observation. Results: A significant improvement in participation, increasing from 25% to 83.30%, and fine motor skills in the “very good” category improved from 43% to 52.94%. The children showed greater confidence, positive emotional expression, and willingness to perform in front of others. Conclusion: The SLIME ASA program provides tactile, proprioceptive, and visual input that help children recognize, manage, and express their emotions more adaptively. The play-based therapy approach encourages active engagement, creative exploration, and experiences of small successes, which gradually strengthen children’s self-confidence. Social interaction during the activities also contributes to improving communication skills, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships.
