Abstract

Discussion on the tradition of Pesantren is critical and needs to be studied in more depth. This is because the study never ceases to be debated both from the historical side and its characteristics. This goal aims to understand three things: First, the existence of students viewed from the point of historicity through the study of the sociology of religion in Indonesia. Second, the paradigm of the concept of barakah is rooted in the world of Pesantren. Third, understanding the concept of barakah that internalizes students to take action in tabarruk or ngalap berkah social practices. The method used is through a literature study approach, examining the texts of articles with similar themes based on the theory of symbolic interactionism. Data collection is carried out by selection, classification, and categorization. The results found three things: First, in the study of the sociology of religion, Santri is an essential element in the Indonesian subculture called Pesantren. The existence of Santri is the typical determinant of a Pesantren. Second, the concept of barakah that students understand is very diverse; some call it ziyādatul khoīr, the Grace of God, miracles, benefits, and an amulet. In this case, the variety of meanings is adjusted to each insight and experience of Santri in Pesantren. Third, the concept of ngalap berkah becomes a tradition in Pesantren as a form of social practice of Santri which starts from the understanding of each Santri. The term tabarrukan is divided into two parts, namely in the form of ta’zīm and sam’an wa thā’atan. The conclusion of this paper shows that these three aspects (santri, barakah, and ngalap berkah) are a unity that cannot be validated in forming a pesantren.

Abstract

Food is one of many global challenges that require significant attention. Indonesia, with the majority Muslim population and the largest number of pesantren in the world, has become the second biggest food contributor in the world. It is inconsistent with the principles of Islam. This research is concerned with the implementation of an integrative approach to food management in pesantren through the integration of agriculture and entrepreneurship education. Pesantren, as a self-sustaining community, provides an ideal medium to explore sustainable practices. This research is a qualitative case using the triangulation method with both observation and documentation techniques. This research involves the implementation of a structured education program within the Pesantren that combines agricultural practices and entrepreneurial skills. The results highlighted that by integrating agriculture and entrepreneurship education, pesantren communities significantly contributed to reducing the number of food. The results of this research demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating agriculture and entrepreneurship education in reduction, honing skills, and fostering a sense of responsibility and sustainable practices among residents. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating education and entrepreneurship for holistic food management in Pesantren. The discussion delved into the social, economic, and environmental implications, highlighting the potential for scalability and adaptation in other similar settings. This integrative approach does more than solve the food problem; instead, it also contributes to developing people skills and sustaining the community in Pesantren.

Abstract

Pesantren Darussalam Gontor is one of the oldest and most prominent pesantren in Indonesia, known for its excellent education system and teaching quality. To ensure the sustainability of its development, Gontor implements the Panca Jangka concept as a long-term development plan. This paper employs literature review and content analysis to examine the Panca Jangka concept implemented in Pesantren Gontor and its impacts on the advancement of the boarding school. Relevant data regarding Pesantren Gontor were gathered from various literature. Panca Jangka consists of five key aspects; education and teaching, cadre training, facilities establishment, self-financing, and the welfare of the pesantren community. Its implementation has brought significant positive impacts, such as improvement in educational quality, the establishment of a nationally accredited university, and economic empowerment of the surrounding community. Comprehensively, Panca Jangka plays a vital role in advancing Pesantren Gontor and contributing to the development of pesantren in Indonesia. Gontor becomes a prime example of modern pesantren management that adapts effectively to the changing times.

Abstract

The Qur’an, as a guide for every Muslim, is understood as a sentiment that is able to manifest the cultural behavior of society. In one study, understanding and meaning between the Al-Qur’an and life is called “living Qur’an”. This living Qur’an research discusses the use of Surah Al-Qadr as a talisman in farming in the rokat sabe tradition of the Dawuhan community, Probolinggo, which aims to describe how society emulates the function of the Al-Qur’an in everyday life. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive-analytical inductive patterns. The research results show that this tradition is a tradition left by previous ancestors. In this tradition, people believe that Surah Al-Qadr is a reading that can bring glory and prosperity and can fertilize plants, based on Surah Al-Qadr, which means “glory”. This is consistent with Quraish Sihab’s argument in Tafsir Al-Misbah, which explains that the Al-Qur’an is noble; it was revealed to a nobleman (the prophet Muhammad), and its glory increased by being revealed on a noble night, too. Apart from that, local people are also famous for the term “santri nderek Kiai” because they have a santri spirit and are very obedient to kiai, who are considered religious figures and local regional leaders. This is proven by the existence of several religious rituals in the Rokat Sabe tradition, namely making the Surah Al-Qadr as a talisman for farming.

This is because the Pesantren community believes that the culture contains high moral values and is beneficial for life, maintaining harmony with society and the surrounding environment. Culture can be interpreted in 3 parts, namely intellectual, spiritual and aesthetic development, which leads to visible culture and invisible culture. Among the cultures of modern Pesantren is developing the values of aqidah, sharia, devotion, intellectualism, leadership, discipline, independence, simplicity, cooperation, responsibility, and mastery of foreign languages, both Arabic and English, in accordance with the demands of the times.

Abstract

This article aims to provide an in-depth understanding of Nahdlatul Ulama figures and their influence on the phenomenon of saweran (giving money or gifts) to Qori'ah (Qur'an reciters) in various religious events. The article aims to convey the views of Islamic scholars regarding the legal, ethical, and social impact aspects of this practice, as well as provide a perspective that can provide solutions to the problems that occur. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is one of Indonesia's most prominent Islamic organizations, which significantly influences the development of Islam in Indonesia. The data was collected qualitatively by looking at primary sources of Nahdlatul Ulama media, including websites, applications, social media, and secondary sources from other media that also reported on the views of Nahdlatul Ulama figures. The data taken is comprehensive, where the researcher tries to take all existing data objectively so that valid data processing is produced. The theory presented in this article comes from the books of classical and contemporary scholars related to the discussion. The results of this study indicate that the views of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) leaders had succeeded in becoming a warning and advice for the people of Indonesia to abandon the saweran tradition against Qori'ah because it is not by social norms and violates the manners and ethics in Islam when recited the holy verses of the Qur'an.

Abstract

This article reviews the relevance of Ismail Raji al-Faruqi's views on monotheism education and character education, focusing primarily on moral and religious education in Islamic boarding school environments in Indonesia. Monotheism education, a central concept in Ismail Raji al-Faruqi's thinking, is considered a crucial foundation in the development of science. The method used is library research, which collects and analyzes data from various sources such as books, journals, and related research. This research produces findings that al-Faruqi's concept of monotheism education is substantively relevant to character education, especially in the context of developing moral and religious character in Islamic boarding school environments. Al-Faruqi's contribution to enriching character education in Pesantren through a monotheistic approach helps ensure that Islamic values and holistic personal development become the main focus, producing individuals with good morals committed to developing knowledge.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the discussions of Fiqh within a Sufi book entitled Qurra al-Aṣfiyā’ ‘alā Sharh Hidāya al-Adhkiyā’ by Kiai Zainullah, Malang. Employing qualitative research design, this paper uses intertextual study as its analysis tool. The findings reveal that Kiai Zainullah incorporated four Fiqh topics in his work. These topics are 1) differing views among madhhab imams on the status of basmala, 2) the rulings on beautifying one’s voice when reciting the Qur’an, 3) the ruling on listening to women’s singing voice, and 4) the ruling on marriage versus celibacy in term of uzla. The implication of this research highlights the necessity of exploring the relationship between Fiqh and Sufism, especially the Fiqh discussions within a Sufi treatise, in a more creative framework rather than being solely confined to the paradigm of harmonization and alignment.

Abstract

This article intends to elaborate in depth on Abd al-Jabbar ar-Rifa'i's (AJR) thoughts about the philosophy of fiqh. This topic is particular because AJR explicitly uses the term the philosophy of fiqh as a new study in Islamic law, as a new branch of ushul fiqh. To deeply explain the concept of the philosophy of fiqh and its position in Islamic law studies, the author uses qualitative descriptive research with a philosophical approach, especially the philosophy of science. This research found that AJR limits the philosophy of fiqh in a loose definition, whereas a material object, fiqh, is approached with a philosophical and sociological perspective. The philosophy of fiqh is also compared with other traditions in Islamic law studies, such as ushul fiqh and maqashid asy-syari’ah. With these broad boundaries, the AJR concept of the philosophy of fiqh is flexible. It opens up opportunities for developing broad fiqh studies when faced with developments in modern science and responding to various contemporary problems the Muslim community faces. The philosophy of fiqh in this article also shows the shifting paradigm cycle in the study of fiqh or Islamic law.
