Abstract

The complexity of English grammar poses significant challenges for language learners, leading to various errors. This study employed a qualitative approach to investigate the categories of grammatical errors made by 138 students and the cause of error. The study gathered qualitative data through questionnaires and tasks completed by students. The findings revealed five key areas where students struggled with grammatical errors: noun phrases, verb phrases, word order, transformation, and verb and verb construction. These errors stemmed from various factors, including interference (25.80%), overgeneralization (87.09%), performance errors (96.77%), transitional competence markers (80.64%), communication strategies (64.51%), and teacher-induced errors (67.75%). Notably, performance errors had the most significant impact. However, additional research is necessary to explore learners' psychology in English classes to enhance teaching effectiveness. This research makes a significant contribution to the field of applied linguistics, particularly in understanding grammatical errors made by foreign language learners. The contribution reinforces the notion that error analysis is not only essential for evaluating learner progress but also serves as a diagnostic tool to improve teaching methods and develop more effective and accurate instructional materials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of job satisfaction among Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 138 PAI teachers across various educational levels. The descriptive analysis revealed a generally high level of job satisfaction, with 51.4% of respondents categorized as "Very Satisfied" and 43.5% as "Satisfied." The mean job satisfaction score reached 190.59 out of a maximum of 225, indicating that most teachers experience fulfillment across multiple dimensions, including work environment, leadership, rewards, and interpersonal relationships. These findings suggest that the majority of PAI teachers perceive their professional, emotional, and administrative needs as being adequately met. Nevertheless, a small proportion of respondents reported lower satisfaction levels, highlighting the need for further qualitative investigation. The results provide empirical insights that may inform educational policymakers and school management in formulating strategies to enhance teacher well-being, motivation, and professional performance within Islamic education contexts.

Abstract

English language learning in higher education plays a crucial role in supporting students' academic and professional readiness, especially in the era of globalization. However, students from non-English majors often face difficulties due to teaching materials that are not aligned with their contexts and specific needs. The available textbooks tend to be generic and do not adequately support meaningful and applicable learning. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a contextual English textbook based on the ADDIE model that is relevant to the needs of students across various disciplines. This study aims to design an English textbook using the ADDIE model for non-English study programs at Universitas PGRI Banyuwangi. The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach. Based on the results of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, it was found that approximately 85% of students from non-English majors are at a beginner level in English proficiency. Nevertheless, 90% of them are highly motivated to improve their English skills to an advanced level in order to meet academic and career demands. Regarding learning material needs, around 88% of students expressed the need for content that is relevant to their respective majors and professional fields. The preferred types of materials include authentic texts (75%), new vocabulary (68%), and context-based exercises (70%). Students' preferences for learning activities also revealed clear tendencies. About 80% preferred pair or group discussions, while 85% expected an active and collaborative classroom atmosphere. In addition, 78% of students stated that receiving direct feedback from lecturers is very important in the learning process. In terms of learning outcomes, 82% of students were able to translate texts relevant to their major, 76% could identify academic text types, and 74% showed improvements in reading and speaking skills. The findings also indicate that 92% of students experience a gap between their initial abilities and the expected level of English proficiency. Therefore, it is essential to develop a textbook based on needs analysis and the contextual ADDIE model to bridge this gap and provide a more relevant and meaningful learning experience for students across disciplines.

Abstract

The problem in this study is the still low basic shot-put-sport technique in grade V students of SDN Karangrejo Banyuwangi. This study aims to improve shot-put-sport learning with shot modification through Lesson Study in grade V students of SDN Karangrejo Banyuwangi Regency in 2023/2024. It is hoped that with this learning modification, the basic shot-put-sport technique will improve. This research is a Classroom Action Research. The research subjects used were 20 grade V students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Data taken by researchers and collaborators using student behavior observation sheets in learning and basic shot-put-sport movement assessment rubrics. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Based on the results of the research and discussion, it can be concluded that after being given the first cycle learning completeness action, the first meeting increased by 8.33% from the initial condition. In the first cycle, the second meeting increased by 37.50% from the first meeting. In the second cycle, it increased by 16.67% from the first cycle, the second meeting or increased by 62.50% from the initial condition. The improvement of learning completeness, the researcher believes that through the play approach, it is very helpful in the learning process of linear style shot put. Based on the results of the research and discussion that have been described in the previous chapter, the following conclusions can be drawn: by modifying shot put learning through Lesson study, it can improve the basic shot-put-sport technique in class V of SDN Karangrejo.

Abstract

The novel “Hujan” by Tere Liye is a literary work that combines elements of science fiction with the theme of love and struggle. The story is set between 2042 and 2050, where the world experiences a terrible natural disaster due to a volcanic eruption that results in a depopulation of the human population. The main character, Lail, is a girl who loses both of her parents due to the disaster and meets Esok, a young man who saves her. The purpose of this study is to analyze the word rain in Tere Liye's novel Hujan. The author uses a qualitative method with the data used being the novel Hujan by Tere Liye. In this novel, the word hujan is not just a natural phenomenon, but a symbol rich in meaning and emotion. In this novel, hujan functions to describe various themes such as loss, love, friendship, and the main character's life struggles. Hujan has a deep representation both in terms of physicality and mood. Physically, rain describes extreme climate change due to natural disasters, such as an ancient volcanic eruption that causes a volcanic winter. Rain reflects the emotions and journeys of the main characters, Lail and Esok. Rain is often associated with feelings of sadness, loss, and hope. The representation of rain in this novel not only functions as a physical element, but also as a tool to describe the emotional dynamics between characters and criticism of the environmental conditions faced by humanity.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the cardiovascular endurance level of the girls' basketball team at Aldabra Academy Surabaya. Cardiovascular endurance is a vital component of physical fitness that greatly influences athlete performance, particularly in basketball, which requires repeated and high-intensity physical activity. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method with a survey approach and utilized the Beep Test to estimate VO₂max values. The subjects consisted of 12 female basketball players from Aldabra Academy. The results showed that most players were in the good category (58.3%), followed by the very good category (33.3%), and only one player (8.3%) was in the fair category. The average VO₂max was 46.6 ml/kg/min with a standard deviation of 5.01 ml/kg/min, indicating a generally good and evenly distributed level of cardiovascular fitness within the team. These findings can serve as a reference for coaches in designing more focused training programs aimed at maintaining and improving aerobic capacity across the team.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the English reading texts barriers faced by students of guidance and counselling department at PGRI University of Banyuwangi and to know the category level of self-directed learning method used by students of guidance and counselling department. Language barriers include barriers in understanding vocabulary, grammar, semantics, complexity of the reading text material, and decoding or word recognition. Meanwhile, psychological barriers involve issues such as lack of focus, forgetfulness, low self-confidence, shyness, and lack of motivation. These barriers are typically categorized into language and psychological barriers. These barriers hinder students’ ability to comprehend English texts effectively. To overcome these difficulties, many students adopt a self-directed learning (SDL) method, which enables them to take initiative in managing their learning process, including identifying personal learning goals, utilizing various resources, and evaluating their own progress. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The instrument used for data collection consist of 40 questions. The researcher found that there are 2 barriers in reading English text, namely language barriers and psychological barriers. In terms of language barriers, the researcher found that students have more barriers in understanding English grammar. Meanwhile, in psychological barrier, students have higher psychological barriers in felt shyness when reading English texts in front of others. In addition, in self-directed learning method students have more used medium level self-directed learning method.
