Abstract

Unsafe behavior is one factor that can cause workplace accidents. Factors that influence unsafe behavior in workers need to be studied to support work accident prevention efforts. This study aims to determine the relationships between work period and supervision and unsafe behavior among operational workers at PT Bumi Jasa Utama. This study uses a quantitative, cross-sectional design. The population in this study comprised all operational workers at PT Bumi Jasa Utama, and a sample of 51 respondents was selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that most respondents had a new work period (62.7%), supervision was in the inadequate category (52.9%), and they engaged in unsafe behavior (72.5%). The bivariate analysis showed that work period did not have a significant relationship with unsafe behavior among operational workers at PT Bumi Jasa Utama (p = 0.266). Meanwhile, supervision showed a significant relationship with unsafe behavior (p-value = 0.052, Chi-Square test). This study concluded that supervision was associated with unsafe behavior among PT Bumi Jasa Utama's operational workers, whereas tenure was not significantly associated. Therefore, the company is expected to improve supervision of occupational safety and health (OHS) implementation to minimize unsafe behavior and prevent workplace accidents.

Abstract

Occupational safety and health protection is an effort by companies to protect workers while they carry out their work and prevent workplace accidents. Work accidents are generally caused by unsafe behavior factors (unsafe actions) and unsafe conditions. This study aims to determine the factors related to unsafe actions among operator workers at PT PLN (Persero) UPDK Tello in 2023. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional study design. The sampling technique used was total sampling with a sample size of 40 respondents. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and interviews. Data analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that there was a significant relationship between attitudes and unsafe actions (p = 0.027) and between work period and unsafe actions (p = 0.020). Meanwhile, there was no significant relationship between knowledge and unsafe actions (p = 0.522), the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and unsafe actions (p = 1.000), or supervision and unsafe actions (p = 0.441) among operator workers at PT PLN UPDK Tello in 2023. This study concluded that attitude and tenure were associated with unsafe actions, whereas knowledge, PPE availability, and supervision were not. To improve safety, the company should prioritize fostering positive work attitudes and increasing safety awareness, both of which are key to reducing unsafe actions and workplace accidents.

Abstract

Adolescents with disabilities are a vulnerable group experiencing various mental health problems due to physical, intellectual, and social limitations that can affect their ability to adapt and interact with the environment. Mental health disorders in adolescents with disabilities can include emotional problems, anxiety, hyperactivity, and obstacles in social relationships, with some cases reaching clinical significance. This study aims to describe the characteristics of mental health in adolescents with disabilities at SLBN Jeneponto. This study used a quantitative descriptive design implemented at SLBN 1 Jeneponto and SLBN 2 Jeneponto. The study population was all 97 students with disabilities enrolled in both schools. The study sample was determined using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed univariately using SPSS. The results showed that the majority of adolescents with disabilities had undisturbed mental health (61 respondents (62.9%)), while 36 respondents (37.1%) experienced mental health disorders, some of which were clinically significant. Based on mental health characteristics, the majority of respondents experienced emotional instability (58.8%), anxiety (59.8%), did not experience hyperactivity (55.7%), had unrelated peers (53.6%), and received a democratic parenting style from their parents (53.6%). This study concluded that although the majority of adolescents with disabilities had stable mental health, a significant proportion still experienced emotional problems and anxiety, warranting targeted support. Therefore, support from families, schools, and the social environment is needed to maintain and improve the mental health of adolescents with disabilities.

Abstract

Low back pain is a common occupational health problem frequently experienced by workers and can reduce comfort, work capacity, and productivity. Loading and Unloading Workers (TKBM) are at high risk of low back pain because most of their work activities are manual, involving lifting and moving loads. This study aims to identify factors associated with low back pain complaints among TKBM workers, providing evidence-based insights for effective workplace health strategies. This study is quantitative and cross-sectional. The study population comprised 304 TKBM workers, and 168 respondents were selected using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that age, workload, length of service, and stretching habits had a significant relationship with complaints of low back pain. Meanwhile, body mass index (BMI) did not show a significant relationship with complaints of low back pain in TKBM workers. This study concluded that factors such as age, workload, length of service, and stretching habits play a role in the occurrence of complaints of low back pain in TKBM workers. Therefore, preventative measures are needed through workload management, regular stretching before work, and increasing worker awareness of the importance of maintaining musculoskeletal health to reduce the risk of lower back pain.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an infectious disease transmitted through the bite of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes and remains a public health problem in various endemic areas. Vector control is an important strategy in preventing DHF, including through the use of botanical larvicides that are more environmentally friendly than chemical larvicides. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of beluntas leaf extract (Pluchea indica Linn.) in killing Aedes aegypti larvae. This study is a quasi-experimental study with three variations in beluntas leaf extract concentration, namely 10%, 20%, and 30%. Each treatment was repeated three times, with 20 Aedes aegypti larvae per replication. Observations were made every hour for 24 hours to determine the number of larvae deaths. The results showed that Beluntas leaf extract at 10% concentration caused 80% larval mortality within 5 hours. At a concentration of 20%, larval mortality reached 80% within 3 hours, while a concentration of 30% was able to cause larval mortality of 85% within 1 hour. These results indicate that the higher the concentration of the extract used, the faster and greater the level of larval mortality. It can be concluded that the extract of beluntas leaves (Pluchea indica Linn.) is effective as a botanical larvicide against Aedes aegypti larvae, with a concentration of 30% showing the highest effectiveness. Beluntas leaf extract has the potential to be developed as an environmentally friendly, relatively safe alternative for controlling dengue vectors.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia contributes to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. In Indonesia, cardiovascular diseases account for approximately 30% of total deaths1. One of the non-pharmacological therapies to prevent high cholesterol is engaging in regular physical activity, such as aerobic exercise2. Aerobic exercise is proven to be an effective form of physical activity that enhances cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness while lowering total blood cholesterol levels3. This study aimed to determine the effect of aerobic exercise on the reduction of total cholesterol levels among the community in the working area of Kassi Kassi Public Health Center, Makassar City. This research employed a quantitative approach with a true experimental design using a Pretest-Posttest with Control Group model. The study population comprised residents within the health center’s working area, and the sample consisted of 15 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The intervention involved six aerobic exercise sessions conducted over 14 days. Total cholesterol levels were measured before and after the intervention, followed by data normality testing and analysis using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol levels after the intervention (p-value = 0.001 < 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that aerobic exercise has a positive impact on lowering total cholesterol levels. Aerobic exercise is expected to serve as an effective, low-cost, and accessible non-pharmacological strategy for preventing non-communicable diseases associated with high cholesterol.

Abstract

Bottled Drinking Water (AMDK) is a widely consumed drinking water source because it is practical and considered hygienic. However, various studies have shown that bottled water can be contaminated with microplastics, which can affect human health and the environment. This study aims to determine the abundance and characteristics of microplastics in local brands of bottled drinking water (AMDK) circulating in the Faculty of Public Health, Muslim University of Indonesia (FKM UMI), Makassar City. This study is an observational, descriptive study. A sample examination was conducted through laboratory analysis to identify the presence, number, shape, color, and size of microplastics in local-brand bottled water samples. The results showed that all bottled water samples examined contained microplastic particles with an average abundance of 0.028 particles/mL. The highest abundance was observed in bottled water sample 4, with 9 particles (0.038 particles/mL), while the lowest was observed in bottled water sample 2, with 4 particles (0.018 particles/mL). All identified microplastics were in fiber form. The most dominant microplastic colors were blue and black, while a small portion was transparent. The microplastics found ranged in size from 0.087 mm to 1.212 mm, with the majority measuring less than 1 mm. This study concluded that all local brand bottled water samples examined were contaminated with microplastics, with the dominant characteristics being blue and black fibers and measuring less than 1 mm. These findings highlight the need to monitor bottled water quality and further research the potential impacts of microplastics on public health.
