Abstract

Researchers have extensively studied the linguistic characteristics of research article (RA) titles. However, no research has investigated RA titles viewed from research design types published in national and international English Language Teaching (ELT) journals. Thus, the present study aims to fill this gap by investigating the average word length, syntactic structure, and syntactic structure type based on research design. This study used a comparative mixed method design to analyze 120 RA titles published in 2022-2023. The average length of titles was analyzed by counting the parts of speech of the tiles, the syntactic structures of titles were analyzed using the Framework of Cheng et al. (2012), and syntactic structure types based on research design were analyzed by reading the method section of the articles. Results indicate that the average length of the RA titles was 12 words in national journals and 13 words in international journals. Nominal structure was the most used RA title type in national journals, while compound structure was the most used in international journals. Furthermore, the nominal structure was often used for experimental design in international journals, while it was often used for descriptive study design in national journals. The compound and Verb-ing phrase structures were often used for case study design in both international and national journals. In conclusion, there are important differences and similarities in RA title characteristics between the two groups of ELT journal rankings. The findings contribute to the scholarship on the contrastive aspect of titling practices in English for Publishing Purposes.

Abstract

Dynamic assessment is unity of assessment and instruction based on the sociocultural theory in which mediation is gradually provided to promote the cognitive development.   This study mainly aimed to explore the quantitative and qualitative impact of mobile-assisted hybrid dynamic assessment (MAHDA) on Islamic religious Education (IRE) learners’ Arabic reading comprehension (ARC). This recent study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design and involved twenty participants assigned into experimental and control groups. All groups received pre-and post-tests to compare the intervention. The experimental group was mediated through the MAHDA procedure for two months and the control group received conventional instruction. The interview with the participants was also conducted to assess the learners’ perception of the mediation strategies of MAHDA. The pre- and post-test were analyzed by t-test and the transcribed interviews were thematically analyzed. Quantitatively, the results showed a meaningful distinction between the two groups. It highlighted that MAHDA was significantly effective to enhance the learners’ knowledge of ARC. The qualitative findings also indicated that the participants felt satisfied with the MAHDA in improving the learners’ ARC abilities and social interaction. One of the implications of this research is to promote the use of mobile learning as mediation DA framework to teach various features of Arabic including reading comprehension of Arabic. Further research is required MAHDA with a larger site and samples to generate the effectiveness of MAHDA.

Abstract

English is evolving into a lingua franca, reflecting its capabilities in global communication. Educators are challenged to prepare students for this linguistic landscape. The ELF teaching component facilitates effective cross-cultural communication,  which is essential in today's interconnected world. This study aims to explore the implementation and pre-service teachers' perceptions of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and provide insights for Indonesian teacher preparation programs and curriculum development. The research design used mixed methods, with questionnaires and interviews as research instruments, and involved 64 pre-service English teachers in Indonesia. Convenience sampling was used to collect quantitative data. Google Form responses from the participants were taken for data analysis and tabulation. Descriptive statistics were conducted on the data using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS v. 20). The results show the importance of improving pre-service teachers' understanding and implementation of ELF teaching practices in Indonesia. They need assistance in implementing ELF-based teaching approaches. Recommendations are given to incorporate ELF more effectively into the curriculum and teacher training to support the development of their teaching skills. Therefore, ELF teaching not only influences English language teaching but also plays an essential role in preparing students to communicate in a multilingual global context. Through better understanding and implementation of ELF teaching practices, teachers can help students develop critical cross-cultural communication skills.

Abstract

Indonesia has imposed penalties for criminal acts of corruption by sentencing defendants to additional crimes, in addition to the main crime through court decisions. As a text, a court decision is also a practice that uses language like any other text. Therefore, it cannot be denied to analyze the text using the field of forensic linguistic studies. This research aims to explore the argumentative structure of court decisions regarding criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes as argumentative texts. In his analysis, all legal considerations become the basis for decision making. The data in this research is the text of the Jambi District Court decision no. 18/Pid.Sus-TPK/2023/PN Jmb using a qualitative descriptive method referring to a forensic linguistic approach. The results of this research include several things, namely the panel of judges used an indictment that had a high level of empathy and focalization because the indictment was obtained from interviews with the defendants. Thus, it can be concluded that because the claims of 'legitimate and convincing' and 'committing criminal acts of corruption together' are met argumentatively. However, the claim of 'subjected to criminal acts of corruption and additional crimes' needs to be questioned. This is because the six defendants had different sentences. In fact, in the indictment the detailed amount of money received is stated, so this claim is problematic from an argumentative theory perspective.

Abstract

Reading is regarded as an essential activity in language learning, providing a valuable source of information, an exciting activity, a tool of communication, and a way to enhance one's knowledge. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is implemented in reading classes to enhance students' reading comprehension. The present study aimed to find out the correlation between students’ perceptions of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) projects and their reading achievement. The participants of the study were 165 students of the second semester batch 2022/2023 taking a Reading Course in one of public universities in East Java Indonesia. The current study employed correlational design and the data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of four dimensions with 20 items adapted from Fan (2010). The dimensions were students’ general perceptions of CSR instruction, perceptions of implementation procedures of CSR, and views on their learning attitudes in CSR. The data on the students’ reading achievement were obtained through their TOEIC reading test, CSR project, midterm test, and final test scores. The data taken from students' perceptions of CSR and reading achievement were analyzed through Pearson Correlation coefficient. The result shows that the correlation between students’ perceptions of CSR and their reading achievement are highly significant. CSR encourages students to get involved actively in reading activities and increase their critical thinking to comprehend texts. Such experiences are beneficial for them which affect their perceptions of CSR towards their reading achievement.
