Abstract

This study examines the forms of implicature in Ardini Pangastuti B.N.'s novel Lakon using a pragmatic approach. Pragmatic analysis of contemporary Javanese novels that integrate wayang cultural values is still limited, so this study fills that gap by systematically examining the types of implicatures in dialogues between characters that reflect implicit communication in the Javanese cultural context. A qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques was used to analyze 86 implicative utterances obtained through the read-and-record technique from the novel Lakon. The analysis was conducted using Grice's (1975) implicature theory framework, which distinguishes between conventional, non-conventional (conversational), and presuppositional implicatures. The results of the study show that out of a total of 86 data, 37 (43%) were conventional implicatures, 29 (33.7%) were non-conventional implicatures, and 20 (23.2%) were presuppositions. The dominance of conventional implicatures indicates a tendency toward indirect communication in Javanese culture, which emphasizes politeness and social harmony. This study contributes to the development of pragmatic theory by revealing distinctive implicature patterns in literature rooted in local culture and offers an applicable analytical framework for teaching pragmatics and analyzing Indonesian literary discourse.

Abstract

The issue of social inequality in Indonesia remains a critical topic, particularly concerning access to education, the economy, and social justice, which are often marginalized in rural communities. This phenomenon is also reflected in literary works, including the novel Pincuk Garing by Tulus Setiyadi. This study aims to explore the manifestations of social inequality as depicted in the novel. The central research question concerns how forms of social inequality are represented through the characters and their relationships within the narrative. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method with an objective literary approach, employing Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital (economic, cultural, social, and symbolic) to identify various forms of capital, alongside Robert Stanton’s theory of story facts to analyze how these capitals are embedded in character construction and depiction. The findings reveal a disproportionate distribution of capital: economic (12 instances, 31%), cultural (6 instances, 15.3%), social (8 instances, 20.5%), and symbolic (13 instances, 33.3%). This imbalance directly influences disparities in power, recognition, and opportunity, wherein characters with greater capital are portrayed as dominant, while those with limited capital are frequently marginalized. These findings underscore the significant role of literature as a mirror of social realities and contribute to addressing gaps in existing scholarship by applying Bourdieu’s capital theory to Pincuk Garing, thereby offering a comprehensive analysis of multidimensional social inequality.

Abstract

Traditional kethoprak performances often portray women as passive figures, but the play Rara Mendut-Pranacitra challenges this by presenting an active female protagonist. This study analyzes how the central character, Rara Mendut, demonstrates female agency by fighting for her desires and freedom against a patriarchal social structure. Using a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach grounded in Anthony Giddens's theory of agency, the research examines specific dialogues and scenes from a performance available on the Balkam TV YouTube channel. The analysis reveals that Rara Mendut exhibits her agency through three key indicators: reflective agency (subtly rejecting marriage proposals), symbolic negotiation (using humor to challenge authority), and personal decision-making (gaining economic independence). Her ultimate act of agency is her radical choice to control her own destiny. The findings confirm that traditional performing arts can serve as a powerful medium for female resistance. This study demonstrates that female characters in Javanese narratives are not merely passive objects but active agents capable of shaping social structures from within, providing a valuable theoretical perspective beyond traditional feminist criticism.

Abstract

Women in media discourse are often marginalized, considered always wrong and given negative labels. The purpose of this study is to determine the representation of women in verbal texts and visual texts on the Instagram of the Magdalene Online Feminist Magazine. This study uses a qualitative method with a multimodal discourse analysis approach on the Instagram posts of the Magdalene Online Feminist Magazine. Verbal text analysis uses Halliday's Transitional Structure theory and visual text analysis uses Kress Leeuwen's Narrative Representation System. Data analysis is carried out through three stages including identification of processes, participants and circumstances, then multimodal interpretation and triangulation of findings. This study analyzes 42 illustrations from the Instagram account @magdaleneid selected using a purposive sampling technique from January to October 2024. The analysis is carried out in stages by identifying Halliday's transitivity structure in verbal texts and Kress Leeuwen's narrative representation system in visual texts, then interpreting the representational meaning of women based on the findings of both. The results of the study on verbal texts show that the dominant process is the material process, the dominant participants are actors and goals. The dominant circumstance is the cause circumstance. In the visual text, the most processes were action processes, the most participants were actors and goals, and the most circumstance was place circumstance. Verbal text analysis and visual text analysis show the representation of women in the Magdalene Online Feminist Magazine Instagram as active, dynamic subjects, and have important roles in various contexts. Verbal text analysis and visual text also have a complementary relationship and strengthen each other's meaning regarding the representation of women. This research adds to the literature on the analysis of transitivity structures, expands macrolinguistic studies, adds to media studies and gender studies.

Abstract

The popularity of foreign cuisine among Indonesia’s young generation has increased in line with the massive efforts of gastrodiplomacy, which has led to a decline in interest in Nusantara cuisine. The novel serves as a medium capable of creatively and symbolically exploring culinary themes. This study aims to analyze the representation of Nusantara culinary identity in Namaku Alam, a novel by Leila S. Chudori, through a literary gastrocriticism approach, focusing on the function of culinary elements as narrative devices, story settings, and the artistic values contained within. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and note-taking techniques on Namaku Alam. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data, in the form of narrative excerpts containing culinary elements, were analyzed to interpret their symbolic and cultural meanings, thereby revealing the representation of Nusantara culinary identity in the text. The findings show that culinary elements in the novel function as a multifaceted narrative device that builds setting and plot while simultaneously constructing characters and triggering emotional conflict. Culinary aspects are also portrayed aesthetically through symbolic language that reflects the artistic value of origin, taste, presentation, and the manner of enjoying the food. This representation demonstrates that culinary elements in literary works are not merely decorative, but serve as an essential component in shaping the cultural identity of Nusantara.

Abstract

The phenomenon of novels being filmed is now a trend in the Indonesian film world, raising readers' curiosity about whether the adapted film will be the same as the content of the novel. This study aims to describe the form of reduction, addition, and change of variation in the ecranization process of the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into the film “Bumi Manusia” by Hanung Bramantyo, as well as the background of these changes. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with Eneste's ecranization theory. The research data are in the form of dialogues, monologues, and narratives in the novel and visualization of the film “Bumi Manusia”. The results of this study are: (1) aspects of reduction in character and characterization elements were found as many as 6 reductions, 72 reductions in plot elements, and 15 reductions in setting elements; (2) aspects of additions to character and characterization elements were found as many as 8 additions, 23 additions to plot elements, and 3 additions to setting elements; (3) aspects of changes in variation in character and characterization elements were found as many as 7 changes in variation, 41 changes in variation in plot elements, and 21 changes in variation in setting elements. The ecranization process that occurred was not only influenced by the limitations of duration and production costs but also by differences in interpretation between the novelist and the director.
