Abstract

Emotions are an important aspect of human life, and emotion verbs play a key role in conveying emotional experiences. This study aims to analyze sad emotion verbs in Minangkabau using the Metabasic Natural Semantics (MSA) theory developed by Anna Wierzbicka and Cliff Goddard. Through qualitative analysis with a descriptive analytic method, this study identifies and describes sad emotion verbs from dictionaries, literary texts, and interviews with native speakers. The results show that there are several sad emotion verbs, such as “ibo,” “marasai,” and “manangih,” each with specific emotional nuances. This research highlights how the Minangkabau language provides rich terms for expressing sadness and reflects emotional experiences in specific cultural contexts. Using MSA theory, this study makes a theoretical contribution to semantic and linguistic studies and enriches the understanding of the relationship between language and emotion in Minangkabau culture.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of affixation, namely prefixes, suffixes, and confixes, in the corpus of Kompas short stories entitled “Odong-odong” by Arya Seno Gumira Ajidarma. Linguistic analysis shows that the structure of affixation in this short story reflects the relationship between words in the sentence as well as the context in which they are used. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive corpus linguistic method by utilizing KORTARA (Korpus Nusantara) application. This application serves for data presentation, collection, and analysis. The data analyzed are words or sentences containing affixation in the short story “Odong-odong”. The data collection technique is done through documentation of corpus files in KORTARA application. For data analysis, computational linguistic analysis technique is used. The result shows the affixation process in the form of prefixes, suffixes, and confixes. In addition, this study also found that the affixation process functions to change the basic word group into a certain word group, making it easier for readers to analyze sentences based on context.

Abstract

This study investigates the speech acts and psychological dimensions of characters in Cantik Itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan through a psychopragmatic approach. Focusing on how speech acts reveal psychological states, the research examines expressions of trauma, inner conflict, social injustice, and emotional resilience in the novel. Utilizing a qualitative method with a case study design, the study selects significant dialogues and categorizes them into expressive, commissive, and representative acts to explore how language reflects the psychological experiences of each character. Results indicate that expressive speech acts unveil deep-seated emotions tied to past traumas, while commissive acts highlight social bonds and commitments, revealing the character’s coping strategies and emotional resilience. Through psychopragmatics, the analysis illustrates that language in literature serves not only as a communication tool but as a mirror to the characters' mental conditions, thereby enriching the narrative with complex psychological dimensions. This research contributes to literary and linguistic studies by demonstrating how language functions as an expression of inner life, opening pathways for future psychopragmatic explorations in literature.

Abstract

This research examines discrimination and violence against female characters in Gde Artawan's novel 'Bidara Biduri', focusing on how these issues are portrayed and experienced by the characters. The study aims to analyze and critically evaluate the representation of discrimination and violence against female characters in the novel. Employing Simon de Beauvoir's feminist theory within a descriptive qualitative framework, the research utilizes literary analysis methods for data collection. Findings are organized and analyzed through identification, description, explanation, and classification to address the research questions. The analysis reveals multiple forms of discrimination and violence against female characters, including stereotyping, subordination, neglect, and various types of abuse (psychological, physical, verbal, and domestic). Key examples include Westri, who faces stereotyping and verbal abuse due to her profession as a dancer; Leny, who experiences neglect and verbal/psychological violence related to infertility; and Luh Can/Luh Sandat, who suffers domestic violence encompassing psychological, verbal, and physical abuse. This research contributes to the understanding of gender-based discrimination and violence in Indonesian literature, highlighting the need for further exploration of these themes in contemporary works.

Abstract

Gender identity is understood by most people as limited to male and female sex. Conventional society has limitations in accepting gender diversity outside heteronormativity, leading to stigmatization and discrimination of transgender people. This research aims to analyze Lovely Man (2011) in representing transgender identity through narrative and visualization. This research uses narrative and visual text analysis methods by using Judith Buttler's gender perfomativity theory. The concept of gender in this study is analyzed based on character dialogue, gesture, and attitude. The results show that transgender individuals get double marginalization from society as transgender and commercial sex workers. The film Lovely Man (2011) shows that violence against transgender is seen as a form of threat to conventional society for behavior against traditional norms. The movie also shows the relationship between a transgender and a veiled woman who becomes pregnant out of wedlock, as a form of opposition to society's expectations of the veiled symbol. Thus, it can be concluded that Lovely Man (2011) attempts to show transgender from another perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and identify several differences in language use by Sundanese Karawang speakers born in Banten (PS-KKB). In this study, a qualitative method with a case study approach at PS-KKB in Karawang was carried out using participatory observation techniques and interviews with 30 informants which were carried out naturally through ethnographic techniques. The analysis was carried out using the determinant element separation technique and 4 additional phonemes were found in the form of paragogue, epenthesis and prothesis such as [ña] becomes [ñah], [ka] becomes [kana], [atɔs] becomes [əntɔs] and [əŋké] becomes [engkin], as well as 5 phoneme substitutions such as [waé] becomes [baé], [dUh] becomes [bUh], [néng] becomes [nong], [da] becomes [ja], [arék] becomes [adék]. There were also 10 word substitutions from [atUh] to [géh], [tərUs] to [lajU], [pisan] to [amat], [manéh] to [dĩa], [mit-amit] to [tĩŋ-batĩŋ], [siga] to [dowaŋ], [ayɤna] to [kĩwari], [uwa] to [əndé], [dɤh] to [aĩh], [nəmən] to [kabina-bina]. The factors causing the interference of Sundanese Banten dialect are mostly dominated by the lack of adaptation to the Sundanese Karawang dialect and the influence of bilingualism possessed by the speaker, while the rest is influenced by the lack of exploration of the speaker towards the use of the Sundanese Karawang dialect. The results of this study can contribute to the study of phonology related to interlanguage, especially in understanding the patterns of sound interference from the mother tongue into the second language.

Abstract

This research examines the concept of the Epic Self in William Wordsworth's poem "Lines Written in Early Spring." The Epic concept predates the Romantic Era, but its meaning has evolved. While epic literature focuses on famous figures, the Romantic Era centres the author as the hero. This study utilizes the dialectical method, involving thorough readings of the poem and related sources. The analysis examines each stanza and line, linking them to illustrate the Epic Self. The dialectical method is suitable as it reveals the Epic Self by connecting the poem's content to the author's history. The research finds that the Epic Self emerges as a rejection of Reason's dogmas, prioritizing human emotions and freedom in daily life. An example is the line, "And 'tis my faith that every flower / Enjoys the air it breathes," suggesting that happiness can arise from any moment. This research aims to provide a foundation for understanding the Epic Self, offering an alternative perspective on non-popular works like "Lines Written in Early Spring."

Abstract

This study aims to determine how a film is represented through various aspects contained within it so that it can be categorized as an Islamic film. The definition and criteria for a film to be considered an Islamic film are still debated and require analysis to determine its category. This study uses Peirce's semiotics theory, which explains three important aspects of semiotics known as the triadic model: Representamen, Object, and Interpretant. Qualitative descriptive analysis was employed in this study using the non-participant observation method, involving repeated viewings of the film used as the data source. The study presents data from the analysis conducted through the audio and visual elements of the Islamic film. The results of the study indicate that a film is considered an Islamic film if it has one main point, namely the story presented, along with supporting points such as the film poster, symbols, dialogue, and scenes depicted in it. This study expands the use of Peirce's semiotics theory, which was previously more commonly used to identify signs as interpretations of elements in films, into a tool for determining criteria for categorizing film genres.

Abstract

This paper employs chaos theory to analyze Shakespeare's Othello and Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, contrasting traditional interpretations of tragedy with the insights offered by chaos theory. Challenging analyses based on tragic flaws, this study reveals how minor initial deviations—Iago's manipulations in Othello and the priestly vagueness in Oedipus Rex—generate cascading feedback loops leading to catastrophic outcomes. Utilizing Prigogine's theory of bifurcation and Paulson's information theory, the paper traces how ambivalent or incomplete information triggers these trajectories, identifying pivotal bifurcation points like the handkerchief in Othello and the Shepherd's revelation in Oedipus Rex. While Othello's conclusion shows systemic collapse, Oedipus Rex demonstrates a form of reorganization. This approach uniquely contributes to literary studies by challenging linear causality and illustrating how meaning emerges unpredictably from instability within structurally chaotic tragic systems, particularly offering a rigorous examination of Oedipus Rex through the lens of chaos theory, a novel approach in existing scholarship. The study demonstrates that tragedy in these plays is not merely about disorder but a system governed by it, where causality is nonlinear and indeterminate.
