Abstract

The psychological impact of oral literature, particularly the Baru Klinting folklore, on readers has been understudied, especially in relation to material objects associated with the story. This study aims to investigate the psychological effects of the Baru Klinting story on residents of Banyubiru Village, Ambarawa District, Semarang Regency. A qualitative-descriptive approach was employed, focusing on a single subject, Suryana, a resident of Banyubiru Village. Data was collected through recorded interviews and note-taking. Analysis was conducted using a combination of reception aesthetics theory and psychoanalysis. The study revealed three key findings: (1) The subject, not being a literary expert, perceived the story as factual; (2) The subject showed little interest in literature but regularly participated in local traditions like swamp alms; (3) The Baru Klinting story, functioning as a collective unconscious and supported by personal unconscious complexes, led the subject to struggle in distinguishing fiction from reality. This resulted in individualization manifesting as resistance through persona, exemplified by participation in swamp alms preservation. The subject exhibited signs of psychosis, highlighting the profound psychological impact of oral literature on individuals lacking literary expertise. This study underscores the need for further research on the intersection of folklore, psychology, and community traditions.

Abstract

This study examines the themes of colonial entanglement and ecological power in the film Dune (2021), focusing on the commodification of the spice "melange" on Arrakis. Using postcolonial ecocriticism and cultural studies frameworks, it explores how the film portrays environmental exploitation and the marginalization of the indigenous Fremen. The analysis reveals how colonial powers, like House Harkonnen and House Atreides, dehumanize and oppress the Fremen, ignoring their ecological knowledge and cultural significance. By drawing parallels to real-world colonial histories, the study highlights the film's critique of environmental degradation and cultural marginalization. It underscores the importance of recognizing indigenous knowledge and rights for sustainable and equitable resource management. This interdisciplinary approach provides insights into the ongoing relevance of colonial power dynamics and resource commodification in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study explores the process of achieving self-actualization in Brille, a character in Bessie Head's short story 'The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses,' who manages to fulfill higher-order needs (e.g., esteem, belonging) despite being deprived of basic necessities e.g., physical security during his imprisonment. We utilize Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a framework, employing a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the short story and elucidate Brille's need fulfillment. By examining how Brille adapts and finds meaning in extreme circumstances, this research proposes an alternative perspective on self-actualization, potentially demonstrating that even without fulfilling basic needs entirely, individuals can achieve higher-level needs. This contributes to the understanding of human adaptability in psychology and literature, suggesting that extreme situations may not always hinder personal growth.
