Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research provides a critical examination over the controversy surrounding the history of Abhidhamma based on historical background and written tradition. It is a library research which was done by collecting and scrutinizing data from the Tipitaka and its commentaries, combined with articles and books written by Buddhist scholars. Abhidhamma which is traditionally understood as higher teaching taught by the Buddha, reveals controversies among Buddhist scholars. They questioned the historical authenticity of Abhidhamma as the words of the Buddha, since they found several incompatibilities when looking at the historical background of the development of Buddhist literature. Kathāvatthuppakaraṇa, one of the seven books of Abhidhamma Piṭaka, is strong evidence that the book was compiled by Ven. Mogaliputtatissa Thera in the end of the third Buddhist council long after the parinibbāna of the Buddha. However, the written tradition as reported in the commentaries asserts that Abhidhamma should be accepted as Buddhavacana. Bhikkhu Buddhaghosa Thera in his commentaries consistently tried to highlight the Abhidhamma as higher teachings that should be acknowledged as Buddhavacana. This research sheds light on how the history of Abhidhamma is perceived on through the lenses of history and written tradition.

Abstract

This paper delves into the interplay of religious naturalism and Chan Buddhism, emphasizing its manifestation within the Blue Cliff Record. Beginning with a contextualization of the research, the study identifies a gap in the comprehension of naturalism in this seminal text. Religious naturalism is conceptualized as the belief in nature's entirety, negating the need for the supernatural. By comparing religious naturalism with Buddhist tenets, parallels emerge, particularly the shared accentuation on nature, experiential understanding, and non-dualism. The Blue Cliff Record, a creation under Chan Master Yuanwu Keqin from the Song Dynasty, emphasizes tenets such as the renunciation of attachments and the appreciation of inherent Buddha-nature. A significant portion of the analysis is dedicated to the portrayal of flowers within the text, symbolizing principles harmonious with religious naturalism, including simplicity and self-realization through lived experiences. The dissertation concludes by revisiting its objectives, accentuating the nuanced differences between religious naturalism and Chan Buddhism, and emphasizing the potential for future interdisciplinary dialogues and research.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the Buddha’s teaching on Tilakkhaṇa and present the critical analysis on how the Tilakkhaṇa teaching can be used to reject the soul theory. By using the qualitative research methodology, carried out with library approach, this research presents comprehensive explanation on the non-soul theory (anatta) presented by the Buddha in order to counter the soul theory. Tilakkhaṇa is the philosophical teaching to prove that soul theory is ungrounded. The three characteristics of existence such as impermanence (aniccā), suffering (dukkha) and non-self (anattā) are the truth of existence rejecting the soul theory. It is because all conditioned things are impermanent, therefore they are fraught by suffering (yad aniccaṃ taṃ dukkhaṃ). Because they are impermanent and suffering, therefore they are to be seen as non-self. Whatever suffering, it is also non-self (yaṃ dukkhaṃ tadanattā). By utilizing the content analysis method, this research contributes an insight on how Tilakkhaṇa teaching is applied to reject the soul theory.

Abstract

The Noble Eightfold Path is the core teaching of Buddhism that aims to guide individuals to nibbana. Indian philosophies, such as dharma and moksha, have a major influence on shaping Buddhist core values, creating a rich spiritual and ethical foundation. However, the integration of the two requires a deeper understanding to meet the challenges in the modern context. This study aims to explain the integration of Indian cultural philosophies with Buddhism in the context of the Noble Eightfold Path, and explore its impact on contemporary Buddhist practice. It uses a historical and philosophical approach through desk research to examine the influence of Veda values, including dharma, karma, and meditation practices, on the evolution of the essential elements of the Eightfold Path. The findings show that the integration of Indian cultural values enriches the Noble Eightfold Path in terms of ethics, spirituality, and wisdom. Its relevance extends to cross-cultural contexts and addresses modern ethical challenges. The study concludes that the integration of Indian philosophies and Buddhism not only strengthens the foundation of Buddhist teachings but also creates a moral framework that is relevant to modern life.
